I got my Brick yesterday and the quality of the whole device really surprised me in a good way. However, the unit I got had terrible light bleed which forced me to open the device, unscrew the light bar a little and also pull on the motherboard a tad. Then when putting the back on I couldn't screw the top two screws all the way or the bleed would return, so it doesn't fit flat anymore and I had to use some tack to stop the lightbar from rattling...it's a small compromise but it did make me wonder of the quality control of every unit. I just wanted to share my experience because it was a huge bummer and apparently you can't get a return for an issue like that.
@TrevHollandАй бұрын
37:58 "I just don't understand why they designed it with the metal plate on the back. This effectively makes it a heat sink for the CPU which, unfortunately, is a pretty hot running chip." This is exactly why they designed it with the metal plate on the back. Right down to the thermal pad, visible at 19:13, that thermally couples the CPU to that metal plate. Without it, the thing probably overheats.
@mateuszQRDLАй бұрын
That's right, and any active cooling would make it louder, thicker and less power efficient. However, I see a possibility for revision 2: lead the heat upwards with heat pipes to the top of the plate where you could place a full-width ribbed radiatior. The radiator should be flush with the plastic bottom of the case so it doesn't snag on clothes. This would also decrease the possiblity of loosing you shoulder buttons, since they would sit in a valley. Obviously, such a modified plate would have to be either CNC milled of 3d printed, so add $10 to the price - still super cheap.
@osamu_90Ай бұрын
He knows, that's why he called it a heatsink to begin with. I think his point was that it's _possible_ they could have gotten away with a different passive cooling solution, like a separate heatsink or maybe a graphite sheet on the inside of a fully plastic shell, much like what laptops and phones are doing instead of using the heatsink itself as part of the shell. It'd still feel warm to the touch and is less effective at dissipating heat, but nowhere as unpleasant. To be fair though, this handheld was probably never meant for playing DC/N64 games considering the controls, so it probably isn't that bad an idea and possibly even brilliant. Makes significantly more sense than sticking an overpowered chip in a vertical handheld and a noisy fan to keep it from overheating. edit: forgot to mention that it has been known since TrimUI Smart Pro that TrimUI overclocks the Allwinner A133 Plus chip (which is already an overclocked version of its sibling, the A133) so it's pretty overkill. I have no idea if they use the same settings on the Brick, but if they do, I reckon it'll feel great if you change the CPU governor to something more conservative and underclock the chip (something people have already done for Smart Pro, should come up pretty quickly if you search for it).

Minui with dedicated L3/R3 buttons for example for save states and save load, is insane. I never bind those, because I dont wanna saveload by accident. So I always go via the menu. But with dedicated buttons, you never touch except for that, its a gamechanger. The device itself is beautiful, and MINUI is insane for it. Its basically an Analogue Pocket Light for 50bucks. Which is absurd. I personally think this is the Miyoo Mini, Rg35XX killer we had been waiting on. This as well as the RG35XX are nobrainers.

@CujobobАй бұрын
It really depends on how hot it gets. Here, the issue could be that the screen may suffer longterm from the heat being so close to it. The case being used as a heatsink isn’t a bad idea at all with an aluminum console.

Although it is beautifully designed I'm not convinced. :) The Miyoo Mini is such an exceptionally well-designed and purposefully built device that it is honestly hard to beat... One thing that often gets overlooked is the power-draw of these handhelds. I guess a lot of people don't care. But personally I care a lot about that metric. I can go on a through hike, or go bike packing, living a week or two in a tent. And as much as I enjoy nature there's also a lot of downtime in that tent. Having a retro gaming handheld that barely requires power to run is a huge deal for me. The Miyoo Mini can last 7.5h when playing SNES games on minimal brightness on a 2000mah battery. According to specs of the TrimUI Brick, it has about the same power efficiency as RK3566 devices. Making the Miyoo Mini about twice as efficient. Sure, the Miyoo doesn't have Dreamcast or N64, but that's also its biggest strength in my opinion. A Dual-Core SoC that only has a 2D display engine (No GPU/3D hardware), no Wi-Fi and a mono speaker; That's what makes the device so power efficient! :) When I was bike packing this summer I only needed to recharge the Miyoo once, and it did next to nothing on my 30 000mah powerbank. Which in turn gave me peace of mind that I had enough juice to power the other tech that was more crucial to the trip.
@gt798427 күн бұрын
Agree. The Brick is currently only great up to PS1, just like the Mini, yet costs almost twice as much and is heavier & bigger. Also, nothing beats OnionOS. I think the Brick has alot of potential though, the screen is great and it could become useful for N64 with an analog stick grip addon. It could truly become a Mini on steroids, although it will never have the same charm.

I had a worse first impression. I think mine came with shoulder button defects, because L1 and R1 don’t consistently work. Hoping that the red/violet ones are better. Update: I read the review from Retro Handhelds, and they also mention that their device's L1/R1 buttons felt spongey. I've given them some use and even filed/trimmed the plastic slightly to hopefully fix the issue, and while it has gotten a little more reliable, it's still not comfortably actuating. I'm going to be trying MinUI as well, which looks to be a huge improvement over the StockUI's software bugs (Advanced Menu will not save/load when playing SNES or GBC is one bug).

CrossMix OS has addressed several major issues with the original system: 1. DS Game Display Issues: It resolved the significant split-screen display problems that occurred while running DS games, improving screen quality. 2. Audio Distortion Issues: It fixed the "sharp" or "distorted" sound in the high-frequency parts of games, enhancing the audio experience.
@solidust573Ай бұрын
Seems like a device like this would be perfect for Pico-8 but it was never mentioned. Also something I find Interesting is that the Brick outperforms the PsVita with emulation but the Vita doesn't even break a sweat or get slightly warm running 16 bit games. It seems like the brick might be pushing far harder than it needs to for running these games. Something that could potentially be fixed with future updates.
@osamu_90Ай бұрын
If it's the same settings as TrimUI Smart Pro, they're overclocking the chip out of the box. The Allwinner A133P chip itself is already an overclocked version of the regular Allwinner A133 so it's kind of overkill. People have already been playing around with changing the CPU governor and clock speeds so it's definitely already doable.

I'd say redesigning the shoulder buttons to give a place for your fingers to rest against and not touch the backplate might be a solution, little fins that protrude up between fingers and the backing, to prevent the uncomfortably hot aspect. I am quite against suffocating the CPU and the backplate seems like a good solution, given the options.

Looks nice, I have a Miyoo Mini Plus and a Trimui Smart Pro, so I think the best of both worlds. I like the more colorful Miyoo Mini Plus with Onion OS. I think the Trimui Smart Pro is the way to go over the Brick since it gets dual-stick controls and has a more comfortable width

Oh hell yeah, I was waiting for this. Edit: well, it's great but the 40 deg thing is a deal breaker for me. I'll wait for a revision that somehow addresses this issue. Edit 2: I bought it anyway, holy cow I can't stop buying these things LOL.

25:10 MinUI is an alternative frontend for libretro, which is pretty cool (it's not retroarch).

While the heat dissipated from the processor to the metal plate may be uncomfortable, it is preferable to having the heat trapped inside the casing, which could lead to premature equipment failure.

I'd like to see temp/performance tests if you take the thermal pad off to undo the heatsink usage of the backplate.

That's the best looking device on the market, in my opinion. Too bad about the screen size, I'm over 40, so I need a 4 incu screen at a minimum.

I ordered the black model on AliExpress when it went up for sale. Supposed to be delivered last Friday but USPS lost it for a few days, then when I finally got it on Wednesday, I found out they sent the white model instead. 🤦🏻♂️ So I haven't played it yet since I'm probably going to return it and now debating just waiting on the red model to release, whenever that is.
