I agree alot of these reviewers tend to just play the start of games. many 10mins worth and say its OK. edit, not meaning that this review does that but....

@@knivesron that's fair and I am certainly guilty of that depending on the title. It can be challenging finding a balance in long form games for review because uou are often doing 10-15 games in a video like this or more, so you could be in dozens of hours of gameplay just to get to a point of showing 20 secconds of footage. Also, I am only speaking for myself, when I am testing devices, I do spend hours doing that to get a feel across multiple platforms, but I often don't have the camera on while I do that testing. So when I turn around and do film, I have a tendency to start a new file, and show the beginning of the game.

The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is basically just an Odin 2 Lite, or Odin 2 Mini, especially considering Retroid owns Ayn.

Great review! Definitely need to see some more Gamecube and PS2 footage, since that's kind of the draw of this device. You should also include what settings you used for which game. I'd personally be interested in seeing things like Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Kirby's Air Ride, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Kingdom Hearts 2. Just some titles that I think might really show us what the device can do in those more hi-octane and demanding types of games.

I like how you addressed specifics when it comes to marketing, like warning to keep people’s expectations in check, you’re very spot-on in this review when it came to your impressions. Very nice review. Can’t wait for mine to arrive! I personally wanna see more about 3DS games. Specifically Pokémon, which I feel should run very smoothly as only things like shaders are what’s demanding on them. But from what I’ve seen shader loading is significantly better in this one. That and Monster Hunter which are hard to run but I HAVE seen people making them work.

Games of interest: Switch: Bravely Default 2, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee, Animal Crossing. I feel like these games are borderline between possible and not. PS2: Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 12, Silent Hill 2. But honestly im confident these will play just fine.

The unit should not come with commercial pirated ROMs, but emulators should be preinstalled, configured and ready-to-go. I bought Retroid Pocket Flip last year and wasted too much time doing this. Not impossible of course, but since most people have to do this anyway, this could be stream-lined. Besides this, Retroid makes great devices and I will pick up a 4 Pro ASAP :D

When I launched the device for the first time, there was a quick setup wizard that allowed me to check off a bunch of emulators it could install for me. The issue was most were out of date or old, so I had to annually update a number of them.

Thankyou for answering my question. I got another question tho😂. So when you download the emulators, and download load the games do you still need to be connected to the internet. Like after I download any game I can play at anytime without WiFi. Like if wanted to play a psp vitia game do I have to be online to play the game or play any other game on the list? I’m torn to preorder now because of that green tint on the screen. I’m new to handheld emulators and I hope retroid’s reputation will come thru with fixing this. They actually just let me know it has been fixed and they sent me a picture. I think there is a firmware for me to test as well to verify. Looks like that screen issue is a non-issue now!

The small screen of this RP4 makes N3DS almost unplayably small, using both screens. For the $200 price range I rather wait for the GameForce Ace.

A specific title I see having issues on handheld PCs and Android devices for PS2: Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga That has slowdown and some graphical issues. In the past I tried playing it via Vulkan with some graphical issues (can see characters and some objects through walls) and then switching to OpenGL would lock it at 1x resolution but ran better. Or vice-versa, but I am pretty sure those were the issues on those renderers. Even on the Steam Deck I have seen the rare hiccup (though runs largely fine at ~720p).

Interesting that the L2 button scaled correctly across the input range unlike in Taki’s review. Would love to see you play that same racing game to compare the play experience. Also leads me to think that issue is a qa/qc issue and “should” be corrected for the retail release

As said Taki’s deadzone was a little more than half way. He demonstrated it playing Sega Rally 2 on Dreamcast? iirc. Seems like the review units really were just sent out from the factory without any Retroid qa but all of the issues I’ve heard about screen color, trigger response, and fan speed/noise can be handled with a little software optimization from Retroid. I remain excited about my ice blue pre order

Batman for vita runs, but it has compatibility issues and isn't fully playable, but that's the emulator, not devices issue. Bully and manhunt both seem to run with minimal issues.

No, you can play with no wifi. Wifi was only necessary if you want to use apps with remote play, like Xbox or ps remote play apps.

It's possible someone builds a custom build but at this time I don't think so. Honestly android may be the best option. Stand alone emulators are what you want for the advanced titles

I try to leave things as stock, but I could have done full screen for 3ds. Everything else I like to leave in its original aspect ratio.

You can underclock the game with the emulator... But majority of switch games in portable mode run at 30 or slightly under.... So cutting the clocks would cut them to 20 fps and under

Pretty sure the games are locked to framerate on the switch. Meaning if you have a 60fps game, and lock it at 30fps, it'll run at half speed, regardless.

When I see a handheld review I always think it's a cool gadget, but when I realize it's android I instantly think it's not what I want. I like retro games a lot, but playing on android always have horrible input lag. Even when I'm playing on my Cellphone with a controller connected using a usb cable the input lag is terrible. I mean, if at least it was just 1 frame of input lag it would be fine even to play games like Super Metroid, for example, cause I used to play on PC with such latency, but it's usually 2 or more input lag frames. Unless I'm mistaken and this is not the case for handhelds. If anyone knows anything about the latency I'd like to know.

I have definitely played devices with input lag on android but this device doesn't feel like there is any lag at all. I think that may have been an older issue, because the last handful of Android devices I've used have felt great
