My first car was a regal 30yrs ago as I only had a bike license got me from Boston to Devon on a few occasions with no trouble and also save me a few quid on driving lessons as I put in for my test after 6 months of owning it and passed first time

@@stevebandit1964 I once was welding the engine mount brackets on a friend's reliant car, had front of car jacked up high, asbestos sheet covering most of fiberglass bits, two containers of water and fire extinguisher, told him and his partner watching for fires slightest fire put it out straight away. Laying on my back welding oxygen acetylene whent out, relit with a loud bang from hot metal and I got hit in the face with a bucket of water and dry powder fire extinguisher. Never seen two people laugh so much. This site does bring back good memories.

Nice to see it running Martin. Over the years I have found a small squirt of oil down the plug holes helps up the compression on an older engine thats been laid up for a while on the initial start up. With your knowledge of engines I am sure you already know this but may help a viewer trying to get an engine thats been laid up a while to burst into life.

It's great when you get an old engine running again. I'd be wary of that new dizzy though. They are cheaply made in China with crappy bearings and it will be pure random (hit or miss) if the bob weights are anything like the advance curve you need. They sometimes don't even fit into the hole of the block. I always fit a leccy kit to an original, serviceable dizzy, so then you know the guts are fine. But you got it now so might as well try it.

I think you are thinking of the starter being engaged too long which makes the engine spin the starter motor very fast and makes that weird whining noise. As the motor disengages from the flywheel you hear it slow down and stop, this happens to starters that are not pre engaged. I don't think Modern starters make that noise because they are pre engaged with the flywheel as soon as the ignition is turned on. I therefore conclude it must be the spring at the end of the starter motor making that merry sound :)

@Moonlightshadow-lq4fr I'm trying too educate you in mechanics mike oldfield.the bendix gets stuck in the flywheel or flexiplate sometimes if the batteries low and the solenoid can weld itself together or teeth burred can hold onto the bendix. The whirring noise sounded like a dry bearing spinning fast or dry friction.i heard the started spinning up with the engine revs but it continued after that ,play the video back see if you can hear it ?

@@peteramberley9952 Change your day job peter. You may be trying to educate but are failing fast. I explained to you in the first comment why the starter is noisy but you fail to understand. Solenoids do not make that kind of noise so that should help you eliminate once sauce. Bearings don't either.

Handy bit of kit there the topdon only thing I don't like is with my one it dont have an of button. I have rebuilt one of these engine's in my early years. Good little engine's i put a new clutch in my one and flywheel and starter as the ring gear had taken a beating. Good to hear it running Av still got a body for one. An a axle maybe build one in the future. 😊Nice job Martin i had the high compression engine with the yellow top. Also the 600cc for a car i will try to take pictures of it when am over at my brother's. Yeah weather has been crap Martin i did the brakes on the old Quattro but I said to Tina by the time she got the camera out job was done cheers tc and catch you on the next one. 👍

That's a long forgotten noise, starter bendix over running. I'd not bother with new coil distributor look like a Micky mouse piece of kit.

Do not use that electronic dizzy if you are keeping it positive earth as all those accuspark units are negative earth

@@retrorestore thats sorted then, other thing to look for is on your dizzy they'll be a arrow pointing to the way it turns, the accuspark one needs to turn the same way, most turn the oppisite way
