I gotta say, your critical skills have come a long way. The analysis into Luke and Vader's relationship explains the nuance that most nerds I don't think understand. Vader is badass! But even before the prequels, there has always been a display of softness and pain in his existence. The prequels only elevated it.

I think the opening to this movie does a fantastic job at establishing the menace of the Emperor. It builds on the menace Vader is already established to have amongst the Imperial personnel, only to make it clear that, whatever threat Vader may pose to them, the Emperor is even worse. Vader's line "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am" sums it up best.
