There may be a longer documentary down the road if a major news outlet like History Channel wants to fund it. We have a lot more great footage.

Exceptional video, and Jeff Struecker is someone who I find to be very inspiring. In the late summer of 1993, I was working at the Sikorsky AC Stratford Plant, on H-53s... and one night around 2200hrs, we had probably close to a dozen MH-60L's come in for armor floors to be installed in the cockpits and cabins, along with erosion coating strips for the MR and TR blades. I want to say the aircraft were in our hangar for a few days, not many... and I was 28 at the time, the soldiers which came with the Blackhawks were for the most part a little younger than me. Once thing I'll always remember was how serious everyone felt. We all knew this was going to be a bad place to go into. A few days later, all the Blackhawks were gone. I was talking with either another mech or a crewchief - I forget - but I noticed that one of the soldiers left his hat on the panal board. It had a Corporal emblem held in place to the front of the cap with two pins. I asked what I should do with it, and I seem to think that Mark replied "keep it, it might have some good stories to tell" So I did.. Not that long afterwards, I was at the local Jeep dealer hanging around while my new Jeep was being serviced. I was watching CNN... To my horror and surprise, I saw on the TV monitor Michael Durant's battered face, as he was giving an interview while being held hostage. I remember how much that shook me up........... Later on, as luck would have it I got laid off in 1995, and the hat went home with me. I never wore it - until around 2007... and the one time I did, I felt awkward about it - because I did not deserve this honor. So, I put it away. This past year [2019] for some unknown reason, I've suddenly become completely immersed with what happened in that part of the world during the last few months of 1993, I bought a ton of books, videos... and have been researching pretty much non stop in my free time all the events that took place during that time frame. Meanwhile, the other person in this video here - Keni Thomas, I found out that he was going to stop by the plant [I did get my job back, but in a different dept...] and this was like only 2 or 3 years ago, how I missed out on meeting Keni I simply can't explain of forgive myself for. For a while, I kept the hat that was left behind in that same Jeep which was being serviced while I was watching the CNN reports back in real time. The Jeep got junked about a year and a half ago - maybe two. I know I took that hat out of the jeep, but I can't recall where I placed it, and now - over the past 2 months - this is really starting to bother me, because I have no idea who it belonged to, and even more importantly - if they made it out of Somalia alive. Some may view it as just a hat that I found, but to me it is much more important than that. I hope to God I find it, because if/when I do, that hat which belonged to a US Army soldier that went to Somalia will be permenantly displayed in a place of honor inside my home.

Ive never been to war, but i had a moment were i thought i was gonna get murdered. I too had a conversation with God. I began to think, "well, i guess this is it. We are all gonna die one day, and i suppose today is my day. God, i dont really believe you exist, but it seems like im now gonna find out whether you exist pretty soon. If you do, please forgive me for doubting you" And that spilt-second thought/conversation with God removed any fear i had about death, and it made me curiously anxious to see what was on the other side of death. Maybe it was God removing that fear. Or maybe it was simply acceptance that took that fear of death away. Who knows.

To anyone complaining about the deaths of innocent civilians in Somalia at the hands of either US or UN hands just remember one thing, their OWN warlords murdered HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of civilians with landmines, starvation, torture, and overall murder. Hundreds of Thousands of tons of food and water were brought in at HUGE cost of American lives yet nobody wants to remember that. The fact the force was used was AIDIDS PLAN FROM THE START!!! So stop your whining especially on this page that is honoring the sacrifice of our brothers in arms.

Unless you are ignoring history, the UN sent aid, medicine and food. Mohamed Farah Aidid declared war on the UN peacekeepers and killed several from Senegal, India and Pakistan. The US, wanting said food, medicine and aid to not be stolen in order to continue the peoples suffering sent in the Rangers and Green berets. Capturing Aidid was a Clinton idea that went beyond the scope of the mission task. Without the proper fire support, once the capture mission was moved forward, it became a man to man operation. I think for the 30 wounded and killed on the US side, the Somali's claim to have lost 1,000 fighters that night is unacceptable, since in the end, the people we went there to help still did not get fed, or healed. Colonialism? Hardly.

This op happened right before I finished basic and AIT. I often wondered if Id see any kind of combat near what TF Ranger faced. Didn’t see an actual combat deployment until 2005 when I went to Ramadi. I have an idea what they faced but what was most valuable to me was the lessons learned from that op. That, in my opinion, drastically changed the way we fight in urban terrain. Im not a Ranger, just a basic Recon soldier with a secondary 11B MOS but I would like to give a shout out to all the fellas in the Ranger BNs and The Unit.

maxka That's a load of shit, the US have 2 of the most monumental nation building feats under their belt. How easily we forget Germany and Japan being rebuilt after ww2. A lot of hate in the comment section here... history in hindsight is always 20/20. You cannot judge a man for something he did under those circumstances because none of us were there or would have acted any differently just trying to stay alive and save your friends.

Chris Bluman that’s bullshit, have you seen pictures of American soldiers hurt the Somali youth and two of them even fried the young boy over the fire and posed for the picture smiling. Google it and I heard stories about how soldiers was gunning down on innocent people instead of arresting the person they look for. Not all of them are good soldiers, because of it, nobody can trust them. We was already at the bloody civil war when American soldiers came two years later, if you want help stop the war, they should came when the war just began.

I was living in Mogadishu in 93. Six years old. I remember asking God to get China to build a big glass dome over Mogadishu. To protect us from the night n day air strikes all around us. Especially at night the bombing were so loud. I was scared. God answered by keeping my entire family safe threw our the bombings. I prayed every night. My entire family used to be up all night. Guessing where the strikes were hiding. It was the most frightening think to ever live thru. When the most powerful nation in the world attack’s the weakest nation in the world. I do admit, must of the US soldiers stationed by our school were nice guys. They would give us candy and water. I understand they had orders to follow when they killed over 5000 of my country men. War is terrible on both sides.

I know these streets like the back of my hand...when the black hawk down happened i was 9 years old living in Wardhiigley close to the impact zone, at night around 18:00-20:00 EAT bullets and fighting cool down lil bit and i was sent to get a bread from the bakery, they gave me the bread with a black plastic....next while i was walking towards our home, a helicopter fired bullets around me (coz if they wanted to aim directly at me i would have been hit since i was in the middle of a cross road no cover) and when i dropped the plastic they stopped firing around me. I guess they thought i was carrying some kind of weapon or ammo . Another one i remember was in the afternoon while fighting was happening a pilot came so close to give us a signal to go inside the home and once we run inside we heard a loud boom...around midnight the fighting was intense that we felt that there is a lack oxygen in the air. its a miracle we all alive and survived that night.
