My objective for this channel is to share with others what I have learned over the last 30+ years about living and eating healthier. I share my knowledge with my small circle of friends all the time. I am not a doctor, nor do I hold any type of medical degree, but I believe that my tried experiences may help someone else.
For over 30 years I have used every diet imaginable to lose weight, but I confess that I am now at home using the vegan lifestyle. I want to share what I have learned about eating and enjoying food. And, since I am still learning how to be more consistent with this lifestyle, I have decided to eat more healthily, realizing the weight will come off eventually. Though I have not reached my goal weight, I know that sharing with other people in front of a camera with help me to stay on course.
I have, with the help of my husband of 37 years, raised 3 grown children. I will also share some cooking shortcuts as well as some natural formulas I have used and still use for everyday problems.

These jars are getting so valuable now. If we save jars that are all the same they look so much nicer on shelves or the fridge. I save small jars for seed and dried flower head saving. The seeds keep nice and the seed heads look sooo cute in an antique cabinet with garden books.

Hi Berta, Mom uses a lot of jars for storing as well. I save all my jars for my Amish friend Sadie. She has 13 children & she does a lot of canning for her family & also for her produce stand at her home where she sells homemade jams, jellies, pickles, chow chow & red beets . I will use this method to take labels off before giving them to Sadie as sometimes it is hard to get them off. Sadie does all her canning on a huge wood & coal stove in the dead of the summer heat. She plows her fields with a team of horses in her bare feet & plants the fields. She works along side her husband some of the older kids are old enough to work the fields as well, & a few of the middle ones help take care of the little ones when Sadie is in the fields. The children only go to 8th grade. We have been friends for many years. Thanks again Berta for the tips with the jars .have a Blessed day ( Judy )

For me, I just put a steel wool to it. Since glass is harder than steel, the wool won't leave a mark on the glass, but the glue is definitely softer than steel, and can thus be easily rubbed off.

Hey Hey Berta Jay An even easier way to remove labels, and especially glue --- First, fill the jar with pretty hot water, (to at least the top of the label) and let it set for three to five minutes. The glue melts and the label peels right off. I think 'Dr. Frankenstein' already mentioned a simular method in the comments. But to get all the glue off - Put about a tablespoon of cooking oil on a paper towel, (butter flavored oil works as well. I guess any oil may). Scrub the oil over the glue for a couple minutes, and then wash the oil off with soap and water. Like New! This is a tip I learned from another KZbin channel a couple years ago. Unfortunately I don't remember which one, so I don't know who to give props to. Sorry; whoever you are. I hope this helps everyone. KZbin! It's like getting a college degree, in life.

I have been using 'recycle' jars and their lids for years with me being 80 years old as of now! I simply make certain that any jar is sound, ie, crack and chip free which the normal process for any jar. As for the recycle lids, I don't use: bent lids, lids that have scratches on the underside of any of the lids and I only use lids that have the protective coating on the underside...not the uncoated nut butter type lids (except for more home made nut butter). I have and do reuse these lids multiple times whether they be threaded or lug lids (upon passing proper inspection). I remove any and all labels from the jars using various processes that may be disapproving by some folks but the processes work for me. Any recycle jar and lid that is newly acquired gets labels removed and then bleach-washed in hot detergent water, rinsed, dried, cleanly stored and readied for canning use. There are benefits in using recycle jars: easy to give as gifts without requiring another jar in return; they are mostly free (mine are always free)...no money spent. The canned results using these jars and lids have always (ALWAYS) been perfect and not different than using mason type jars and lids. If new lug lids are needed/desired, then search on your browser for lug canning lids and several sources will appear that are easy to navigate and order from. I have done this many times, Even Amazon will have links for lug and threaded lids. Always get lids that have the protective coating on the underside of each lid...this coating is normal for using with canned food.

Two things. A little shortening or cooking oil rubbed on the jar label and left to sit a bit will also get the sticky stuff off. I'm sorry if this is a repeat, but googone works miracles on jar labels. If you use a lot, you can buy a quart can of naphtha from a hardware store for about $15 and it is the same thing as googone, ronsonall, or zippo brand lighter fluid. Not as eco-friendly as the citrus oil, but it works better on labels and is easier on your hands

I've been doing this for years. The jars with wide mouth are great for left overs. Many sauce jars are mason jars and "Mason" is imprinted on the jar. I've used the baking soda/oil paste with limited success, but I don't like having to clean off the oil afterwards. I've used WD40, which is only marginally more effective, but expensive if you are doing any volume. Gasoline works, but it's pretty harsh and I hate the fumes, and the smell that gets left behind. My go-to method now is low-odor mineral spirits. It's a bit more oily than gasoline, but just as effective. The oder left behind dissipates after a day or two. Also I have found that not every jar is the same. Sometimes the labels peel right off with a little heat; other times they want to be stubborn and have to be scraped off. I put my jars in the microwave to boil the water, and sometimes they still won't peel. I scrape them with an old scissor, or a utility knife blade. Don't ever put them on the stovetop to heat them; they will fracture, as the glass heats too unevenly (my friend tells me...). If you're working with PET (polyethylene) or PETE plastic containers, do not let your hot water temp exceed 130 degrees F, or you'll start to deform them. Use a simple cooking thermometer to monitor. Don't try to heat those (PET) in the microwave, or you'll surely melt them. Don't put any metal in your microwave, including PET containers with remnants of the foil seal still attached (fire show in the microwave...). If you want to remove the inked expiration date-stamp from your container, use 80%+ alcohol or hand sanitizer with 80%+ alcohol. Happy hunting.

It's a shame that no one markets replacement lids for pickle/salsa/jelly/mayonnaise jars for home canning. The jars themselves can be sterilized easily enough, but I'm not so sure about reusing the lids safely. You can boil them, but they have a rubberized coating that helps them seal, and you'll probably cause it to separate from the lid. Maybe just as well. I've heard it said that salvaged jars like those cannot withstand the heat of the canning process without fracturing. I don't know. Seems like my mom reused mayonnaise jars many times.

Baking soda will remove "jar glue" very easily - as well as just about any oil. Don't use anything too pricey or precious - for example I would never want to use good olive oil for this, but I wouldn't mind using baby oil or mineral oil etc. You don't need a lot either, just keep working on it. My grandmother used peanut butter, but I sort of hate to use good food for this purpose when there are other things that work & aren't wasting food. Good idea to wash all old jars very thoroughly too - you might even want to boil some in a stockpot before re-using [just in case]. As always, great tips, Berta. Keep them coming!

Hi Berta Jay - love you and your videos! Awesome tip about reusing jars. Thank you. Here's a tip for labeling those jars. Write on the glass with a permanent marker (like a Sharpie). When you've used all the contents, use a dry erase marker (like an Expo) and scribble over your 'permanently marked - label'. Like magic, it removes the permanent marker (removes the 'permanently marked - label') 😉. *Edited to be more clear with the wording. - CD

Mason jars are ONLY air right, if you’ve sucked the air out of them and the depression in the lid is sucked in. Do not think they’re air tight, merely because you screwed the lid back on. They’re not. This is why reused jars are only good for dry goods. Because, unless you’re using oxygen absorbers for dry goods, like spices and dehydrated items, there’s air in there, which is going to lead to some pretty bad news. Unfortunately, there’s no FoodSaver jar sealer that fits most of these jars, to suck the air out of jars with wet ingredients.

I've found that a much better way to remove labels from both glass and plastic containers is to keep the label dry and fill the container with hot tap water, put the lid on and let it sit for 10-15 minutes then the label easily peels off. Any glue residue is also easily removed with a little olive oil.

@@bertajay You're very welcome and I hope it works well for you too. I appreciate the kind thoughts, my 26 year old garbage disposal decided to begin leaking all over and I thought of your words while we were mopping up the mess to remind me to take it all in stride. Thank goodness we've got a double bowl sink so we can just use the other side for the next several days until the new disposal arrives and I can swap them out. So mostly a calm and peaceful day, interspersed with a little excitement but still a nice day. Cheers!

Love the video! I have a couple of suggestions. Some of the labels have a lite plastic coding and those can parcally pulled off so that the water can get to the white paper layer. And my best one is to use a Scotch Brite stainless steel scrubber to remove the glue and paper. The cleaner is a course steel wool and will not scratch the glass but removed the glue and paper without any effort.

I would NOT recommend re-using washed jars for canning. So I think you should buy your jars for pickling if you have to heat them at all in boiling water at all. Is that true? 😊

I make a paste with baking soda and vegetable oil. One jar, use maybe 1 tbsp of baking soda and then add enough oil to make a brushable solution. Cover the glue part on the jar and let it sit for 30 min or so and just Scrub off with a scouring sponge. Comes off fairly easy.

An easier way to remove the glue, is to put about a tablespoon of cooking oil on a paper towel, and scrub the glue. It should come off in a minute or so. Then just wash the jar with soap and water, to get the oil off. Real easy. This is assuming the sticker/label is already off. But, If it's not; an easy way to remove the label, is to fill the jar with pretty hot water, and let it sit for about three minutes, or so. The glue melts, and label should peel right off. Then remove the glue.

@bertajay 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest with you Elaine, I don't have to cook for other family members because they now cook for themselves...mainly my children cook for their dad and themselves. I am out of that loop...but, it is still hard to take having the foods around that I know are not healthy for me. It is a struggle that I have to work at each and every day. I am sorry I couldn't be more help. 😔

@@bertajay i know that I have a hard time with it and I was just wandering. I’ll want to fix a healthy tasty meal that sounds good to me, but of course he wants meat and potatoes, or cheeseburgers, etc, so then I have to cook two different ways and it can be a struggle, but I am trying to eat healthier in spite of the extra effort and too, it is tempting to eat the cheeseburgers and Fritos and desserts, too, lol. So yeah, it is hard to be around the fattening unhealthy stuff, but I’m glad for your channel and the good choices you give to us.
