If you become an IBJJF recognized Black Belt and keep your annual membership up to date, you don't need another Black Belt to promote you to the next level. Ref: IBJJF Graduation System 4.1.5 I. thru X.

To keep your membership up to date and meet the requirements I have had to have my instructor Luiz Palhares sign the IBJJF paperwork for each degree as well as renewing my membership annually to certify that I met the requirements. I am not sure how you would prove that you met the requirements without someone signing saying that you have proven activity.

@@semperfortisjiujitsu IBJJF requires you to be "active". The reference I gave you explains how to prove that you're "active". Basically, Pay your annual dues, keep your CPR up to date and complete the Rules webinar. Optional, Compete.

Isn't that just after 2nd degree, though? I thought you still had to be registered under a recognized affiliation, and couldn't be your own affiliation until 2nd degree.

Question: Would you recommend becoming an IBJJF member if they are not interested in competing nor owning a school BUT they want to learn to coach and possibly teach (when their skill is sufficient enough)?

I will say joining the IBJJF as a student is relatively inexpensive at approximately $40.00. The other benefit is you will have the ability to have your Black Belt recognized by them in the future (assuming your instructor is IBJJF certified to approve that promotion). Beyond that, there is little benefit aside from competition options (as they are a sports organization first and foremost), and a certifier of rank inside their sporting authority. There are plenty of successful gym owners who are not certified by the IBJJF but, as Prof Saad stated... once one of your students wants to compete for the IBJJF you either have a million hoops to jump through to make it happen or risk losing the student to another school who can provide the avenue.

It's all about control. The whole idea of the belt system comes from traditional Japanese white belt used in Japanese attire getting weathered through training. Thus they created a belt system white to black. All the degrees and rules are just to keep you under capital control for as long as possible. It would be great if submission wrestling gets Olympic recognition and ibjjf and Gracie web of control diminishes.
