I really enjoyed listening to this I trained under Gracie Barra's 1st student. You have a good head on your shoulders.

I've always heard it as CREE-ONCH-AY. I've been called it before because I left a school (due to work schedule changes and a looming moving house) but I paid no attention to it.

It is unfortunate that there are schools that resort to name calling when they lose a student rather than wishing the student well.

I dropped in at another Academy and my Prof messaged me and called me a Creonte. Backstory the BJJ place I go to was asked to leave along with all the other businesses in the area because it was acquired by a corporation and they plan on doing something else to the place. I was there on the last night even helped out a bit removing the mats etc. I signed up for my very first comp in August as a white belt and wanted to put some training in. I post selfies everyday especially when I train. So, I dropped in at the closest bjj place near my house. Posted a selfie after that literally had a caption that says “drop in”. Woke up to a msg from the Academy which is run by my Prof that said “Kreonche” I asked and said I hoped he didn’t mean Creonte. He never responded. And, one of the girls from the Academy was egging it on saying what I did was disrespectful cos I went and dropped in at another Academy the same night Prof had to move out out from the place. I was told to ask permission first and should only train at an affiliate. I said I even posted a selfie one time when I attended an open mat and he didn’t say anything, so I know it was okay. And, me dropping in didn’t mean I’m going to move to a difft school. But since he called me a Creonte then yes. Now, I’m training at a new academy tomorrow and will sign up. And, yes this all happened this week, Thursday to be exact, just yesterday actually.

It is sad that there are instructors out there who conduct themselves like this and in my opinion you did nothing wrong. I personally have no problem with my students training at other schools and I often train with black belts of different Jiu Jitsu associations. I sincerely wish you the best on your Jiu Jitsu journey and hope you are able to find a good school with an outstanding instructor.

@@semperfortisjiujitsu thank you so much! I love the BJJ community so much for when I first started in 2018. Went in a hiatus because of the Pandemic. My prev Academy had to move to a difft location so I had to go to a new one cos of the drive (I hate driving). My prev Prof and Coaches were very happy to see me back on the mat and said I’m always welcome still and it doesn’t matter where I train as long as I’m back. I never knew that the cultish posts and memes about some Academies are actually true. Thank you so much for your response, Prof! ❤️🤙🏻🙏🏻

Creonte is the word Cretin, basically the Brazilians took the word "Cretinous" which means an unpleasant person and put the Portuguese spin on it. Most likely it was from the similar word in Spanish Cretino (cray-ch-e-no) Masculine and Cretina (cray-ch-e-na) Feminine version. The Brazilians have a ton of Spanish words that have become common with Brazilian Portuguese being neighbors to many Spanish speaking nations that you won't find in the Portugal European language because of radio and later television. The first time I heard the word Creonte used was to describe Luta Livre fighter Marco Ruas (UFC 7 Tournament Champion) who cross trained and was not single discipline fighter like most martial artists of that time.

@@semperfortisjiujitsu Very cool video and I didn't know about the soap opera character but I had heard it used as traitor. So now it makes even more sense! Words are influenced by Cultural entertainment (movies, Music,TV ect.) or sports most of the time. Very cool backstory on how that word came about in Jujitsu circles!! Cheers!! !!

Professor, you killed me with the story of your friend and loyalty. 😂

The idea of being "disloyal" to a school in an art like BJJ is so strange to me. It makes sense from a traditional standpoint if we are talking about simply belt hunting, or if we are talking about when the art was first getting started and someone was taking what they had learned from one teacher to give to another. Japanese Jujitsu, Iaido, Karate all had the same type of principal-- you didn't take the style of one family and give it to another family. But now spreading the art and learning is all about growing your game and skill. Students should be encouraged to learn as much as possible. And if the coach doesn't have what the student is looking for then it would be a disservice to the art and to the student to look down on them for seeking out what they need to grow. The idea of calling someone Creonte, or disloyal, is born of stubborn arrogance IMHO.

Agree with this - the problem now as well is there are so many gyms out there: without an international board like they do in karate to set a standard, gyms can be very hit and miss with the quality of teaching. Then there's the added factor that gyms are run as businesses: as a BJJ practitioner, you're paying for a service, and if you don't feel like you're getting your money's worth, there's nothing "disloyal" about finding a gym that teaches to a higher standard. Ofc I don't like treating BJJ gyms like businesses because of a respect for the martial art, but that is the economic system we're in.
