I was with the MP Company there from "89-90" and that is what I was told. Not verified if true or not, but what was relayed to all new transfers to the company . The MPs were responsible for the raising and lowering of the flag and most days the bugle call was a recording. I fired that canon quite a number of times. Even had it misfire once during a ceremony the cadets were conducting for retreat. Long pause between "Retreat" and "To the Colors" on that day. It was a shell casing loaded with a blank shotgun cartridge & you had better make sure the barrel was clear before loading to fire or you might find - who knows what, stuffed down in it to include flammable objects. The MP company was also the honor guard for burials, color guards and most other military ceremonies conducted in and around the New York - New Jersey area. Even took part in Gen. James Gavin's funeral on post.

That appears to be the “Storm” flag flown on inclement weather days, which is the smallest of the three main types of flags flown over Military Installations, ( the others being the normal daily Post Flag and the very large “ Garrison Flag” for holidays). My question though is that it appears are they hoisting a frayed / torn color. I would never have allowed that when I was a active duty MP NCO on Flag Duty.
@blossomlate4 жыл бұрын
Daryl Twigg it isn’t frayed. Watch closely. I believe you might be seeing the folds hanging down which then looks like an uneven edge. No one in the military would hoist a frayed flag.
@daryltwigg78514 жыл бұрын
@@blossomlate I agree that no military person would allow a frayed flag to be flown. Unfortunately in this case the flag was indeed frayed. At .22 sec in to the video the frayed sections can clearly be seen at the flags edge, not folds but you can see actual red thread hanging from the stripes.

I got the chance to see a flag lowering at the end of the day. Would that be called retreat? It was a very moving experience.
@RichardFallstich4 жыл бұрын
Yes, retreat ceremony. The retreat ceremony serves a twofold purpose. It signals the end of the official duty day and serves as a ceremony for paying respect to the flag. Because the time for the end of the duty day varies, the commander designates the specific time for the retreat ceremony. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2PYpZZveq1qnZo

Does anyone know the type of signal gun used? What is the correct protocol for firing the signal gun (or cannon?) at Reveille? E.g., how many reports are sounded and what is the correct timing? I assume the video was edited at that point since we never see reloading, just pulls of the lanyard and firing, which seem to be at somewhat irregular timing.
