I saw this bike advertisement on FB. Since a lot of info wasn’t given about the bike I came her for reviews. Man I am in shock. This bike only weighs 28 lbs. Incredible!

Thanks for the great review! I just had my Why Big Iron v2 delivered last week. It's my first fat bike, I was going to get a more budget friendly Surly, but Why was the only company at the time actually taking orders for new bikes. I'm really glad I ended up the a Big Iron. I'm in VA so I probably won't be able to ride it in the snow until next winter. In the meantime I'll get plenty of beach, sand, and mud riding in. I love it so far. I'm going to replace the dropper as well...maybe it will get more use on another bike.

That looks like fun! I've never ridden a fat bike and I probably never will. I will be going to a single bike solution in the near future and a flat bar monster gravel bike is at the top of the list, but I keep leaning towards a hardtail too... hmmm

I'm not a fat biker per se but I just enjoy watching your channel. I have an electric fat bike here in northern Ontario which I use in winter for utilitarian purposes like shopping and find you need somewhat groomed trails, roads, paths, etc. or the bike bogs down. Now, I see in your video that you are riding what look like snowmobile and groomed trails and you mention maybe doing some winter expedition or touring. Curious as to where you would do this touring.
@DirtyTeethMTB2 жыл бұрын
THX1138 - thanks for watching and commenting... here where I live in Idaho, there are hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails all around... so plenty of terrain to go winter fatbiking/bikepacking, etc - but expeditions like Iditarod Trail Invitational, Fat Pursuit, Arrowhead 135, etc are always on the radar as well :) Ride on!

Nice review. I'll likely get one or something similar when the triangle space grows (ie. non suspension corrected design that blows the frame triangle bigger by moving the downtube closer to the front wheel) and a few other things are tweaked. IMHO bikes in this category should all be spec'd with three pack mounts on the fork and a quiver of eyelets within the triangle to allow for fully strapless framebags. I dream of an integrated collaboration with a frame, framebag and rear rack manufacturer...
@DirtyTeethMTB2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for chiming in, Matthew :) Great points! ps- I will be getting a bolt-on/strapless frame bag for this bike... it has three eyelets on the bottom of the top tube (I totally forgot to mention) in addition to the rest around the triangle... it obviously won't be huge, but it'll be something! Ride on :)

Are the GX cranks stock? Asking because I didn't think GX cranks would work with the wider chain stays.
@DirtyTeethMTB Жыл бұрын
Yes the gx cranks are stock - the fat 5 version comes with a -4mm offset 30t chainring that clears the stays… and I switched to a 0 offset 26t oval ring that still clears 🤙

I like the setup, nice view riding too. I just got new wheels (26x105) so a new Ti frame probably isn't in the works this year. How does this ride compared to a 907 whiteout? It and the Carver are on the short list for sure.
@DirtyTeethMTB2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Irving - curious about your new wheels... are your 105's the nextie single walls? I'm thinking of building up some as well. re: how it rides... I've never ridden a 9 zero 7 whiteout (al or carbon)... but I've ridden plenty of other similar carbon fatties... obviously the ti is slightly heavier (around 1lb more than comparable carbon frame) but it's softer/not as harsh of a ride... so really depends on your wants/needs... can't go wrong either way. re: Carver, my buddy has one... he put a pinion/gates internal drivetrain on it and absolutely loves everything about the bike - so yeah... tough choices for ya!
@whirving2 жыл бұрын
@@DirtyTeethMTB Yes they are Nextie single walls but I haven't had much time on them. They are set up tubeless and I'm still experimenting with air pressure. I think I'll be able to run higher pressure without penalty. I've run fairly low pressure in the cold/ loose snow and they had more auto steer than I'd like, but they ARE 105s so...physics. I have 3 other friends that have them and they are really the reason I got them, got tired of them riding where I was pushing.

Nice review, thank you for the excellent content! I feel the same way about my V1 big Iron. Have you been able to source a oval chainring for your Big Iron yet? I have reached out to Absolute Black and Wolf tooth and haven't had any luck finding one that is compatible with Sram -4mm offset. Any suggestions, thanks. Cheers
@DirtyTeethMTB2 жыл бұрын
Jesse...the lack of chainring compatibility is a bummer. I'm told you can get away with 0 offset on smaller rings, but haven't had luck finding 0 offset ovals in 28 or 26... if you stick with 30, you might be able to use wolf tooth camo (offered in a -4mm) and then get a camo ring... but not 100% sure if they have a 30 oval without checking with them, and I don't think they make camo smaller than 30?... otherwise... swap to race face cranks... cinch chainrings are flip flop, so a +3 ring can be installed backwards and effectively be a -3mm... my buddy has this setup... anyhoo... let me know what you find because I'm still rocking my circular 30 and would love a 28t oval for Iditarod - ride on!!!
@jesse6122 жыл бұрын
@@DirtyTeethMTB Great info mate, thank you!! I will probably ditch the Sram and follow your upgrade suggestions. A 28t oval would be choice for plowing snow - my favorite kind of riding:) Hey good luck on the iditarod, it would be killer if you could film it- but that would be a chore for sure. I appreciate your content - keep it up man, the fat bike community needs content like yours. P.S. Laura at why cycles found a way for the dropout UDH conversion - happy happy, cheers!

@@DirtyTeethMTB Update: I ended up getting a Absolute Black 28t oval boost 3mm offset and looking at the Race Face Turbine cranks. I need to figure out what spindle size to get 136 or 143, I'm kind of new to buying cranksets, so I need to figure that out. Any suggestions?
@DirtyTeethMTB2 жыл бұрын
@@jesse612 off the top of my head, I think RF spindle for fat bike is 189.5 or 190mm - but double check with them first. Also, think they stopped doing turbines in fatty size, but maybe able to swap spindle or find some new old stock or used ones somewhere? I think they just offer Ride and maybe still offer Next carbon in fat sizes now? Again, double check with RF or your LBS... or call the shop I work at... Pet peeve as a suspension maniac: Dampening isn't a word, unless you're talking about moistening something ;) The correct word is damping :D
@DirtyTeethMTB2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! Glad to see someone paying such close attention to my videos! Sorry about your pet peeve... I just like to ride bikes and smile, and I'm full of mistakes - not trying to "dampen" your spirits :). Note taken about damping, I can definitely see the confusion. There are no dampers/ no suspension fork or shock installed on this rigid hardtail - not trying to imply that in any way. In the context of this video (my flexy handlebars & squishy grips, absorbing effects of chattery snow, etc), I had these dictionary definitions of "dampening" in mind: "to deaden, restrain, depress, stifle, lessen the effect, diminish, make dull" etc - definitely not moistening :). Hope that offers some clarity on my use of the word! Ride on, okatbikes :)
