@AllenSmithe5 жыл бұрын
Damn near every volca gets $hit on pre release then ends up with solid reviews and sales over time. They're not super competitive machines but they're not bad budget gear. $200 is a little rich but the feedback from the Drum and Modular owners seems to be positive so maybe this has some tricks up it's sleeves. As a 303 semi substitute, 200 isnt bad. That's the most acid sounding bass I've heard without the addition of a pedal. A used Volca bass comes in around $100 the days, a decent pedal around $80, so even a "cheaper" attempt would cost about the same and require more parts with less convenience.

Eh. They could be doing so many more interesting things with the Volca format. The design isn’t appealing to me visually but the sound is pretty killer for the price. I have all of the Volcas except for the mix but I have to say this one is a pass for me and I am a fan. The reason is I would expect a more innovative sequencer in this to make it worthwhile. Most Volcas have some feature (s) that sets it apart from the other in terms of performance options. This one adds a different sound palette (which you can add to the original Volca bass with a distortion unit effect box or in a daw ) but the rest of it is covering old ground. A swing and a miss for me.

XD has received rave reviews and people were very vocal about wanting it in module form as many people felt they had enough keyboards but still wanted the mini's features. The chaining effect for 8 note polyphony is a nice touch too.
@mc2engineeringprof5 жыл бұрын
@@AllenSmithe Point is that Korg has lost their ability to INNOVATE. What you're describing with the XD is good MARKETING feeding into development. OK. That's important, too, but when there are now essentially FOUR of the nine Volcas that are essentially drum machines and THREE of the nine that are BASS synths, and the best innovation that they have is to borrow an idea from the Triton Extreme and Electribe units with the tube driver, I'd say that they are hurting for some engineering creativity. Korg has old wavetable (Wavestation, DW's), PCM (M's and Trinity / Triton series), Analog Modeling (MS/Microkorgs, Radias/R3, Z1/Prophecy/MOSS, King Korg), Vocoder (from many of the above), Effects (Kaoss line), and other synth tech to merely repackage that would all be welcome updates to the Volca line over the last 4/5 piles of steam that Korg has attached the name to. I get that this is just my own opinion, but I own every Volca and even though I'll likely drop the cash to buy this one (because I like the Bass so much and am eager to see what direction this re-imagining of it takes) too, I think that the company that gave us the M1, Triton, Microkorgs, Wavestation, MonoPoly, Z1, Radias, DW-8000, MS-20, and many more can do much, much, much, much, much better than this. Just my $0.02, though.
