It's the power behind his pick strokes that amazes me. He seems to push through the strings rather than pick them (if you see what I mean)) - there's a lot of sideways displacement of the strings when he hits them.

This guy's the real deal, and I was 'today years old' when I heard of him. I'll definitely look into his work. Doc was an absolute MASTER of his craft, and got away with a lot as a result (a lot of flatpicking traditionalists would scoff if a regular guy did some of his 'tricks'). I'm very lucky to have seen him live before he left us, but very unlucky to have been born too late to have seen him dozens more. GREAT playing.

This isn’t my guitar - it is set up with light gauge strings and a low action. My normal set up would be with a guitar with higher action and medium gauge strings. (I love the way this guitar sounds, by the way…and if I owned it, I would have it set up with my preferences.)
