FYI... From a former F-14 crew chief, The TF30's not only compressor stalled with fast throttle movements but that stall could cause the engines to shit the compressor blades out of the engine if the throttles were moved back and forth to fast to compensate for the stall. They named the engines the "Pratt and Shitney's" on the A model.

It's called the clinch. A boxer will clinch to tie up the other boxers arms and keep him from being able to build up momentum for his punches. It can also force a change in angles and technique. A good analogy for what was going on in the dogfight.

It's weird. Hornets have always sounded louder to me. A louder, harsher sound, a ripping of the air behind the aircraft. But the Tomcat is a deeper thunder. It's as if some of the sound goes too low to hear. It could be the Hornet engines are being run harder because they're much smaller.

What is the story behind activating flaps in the F-14 compared to using flaps in any other aircraft? I understand that it can decrease your turn radius and allow you to turn quicker and get the nose around, but what makes the F-14 special with it compared to doing it in any other aircraft?
@andrewlau6466 Жыл бұрын
IIRC activating flaps at combat speeds in an F-14 will jam them in the lowered position. It's basically breaking the plane a little to get better performance and survive long enough to go home.
@flyingcactus1953 Жыл бұрын
once you use the Flap on F-14, you stuck at low speed because it break and can't be retracted
@heathb4319 Жыл бұрын
The F14 is a much larger aircraft and thus has more wing span which is more lift at low speeds thus allowing the F14 to go a little slower and tighter in the turn/rate fight to get nose on before the other aircraft does. I hope that helps.
@DylanGalman Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the replies everyone! I was a little confused on what the story is behind the F-14 in particular using flaps in a dog fight compared to any other aircraft using flaps and what the difference is. Makes sense now! Thanks again y’all!

@jonnyj. Жыл бұрын
@@GrantvsMaximvs Um... what? It was designed less than a YEAR before the eagle. RFP was mid 1968 for the tomcat, and near the end of 68 for the F15. First flight was 1970 for the F14, and 1972 for the eagle. The designers wanted to get the F100 engines as soon as possible. This was the intended engine, as the TF-30s were literally meant for pre production and very early aircraft only. Like everything with the F14, this was cancelled by the navy due to budget cuts...

My take on the reversal is slightly different. I don't think he misread the offset two circle as being outrated, I think he purposefully set up the offset two circle in an attempt to be able to ditch into the one circle at which the hornet excels. Look at how wide the radius is when he enters his second turn at 14:20 and then how he tightens it down as he completes the turn. That looks intentional to me. His mistake therefore was that he didn't offset the two circle *enough.* If he had, he would have given himself enough room to successfully reverse and have you fly out in front, but he was too impatient and reversed when there was still too much separation between you. The tactic he attempted to use was quite smart, but he was too sloppy going about it.

I've heard GS mention a few times about an enemy plane being in the sun. Why does that effect a missle?

the missile is heat seeking in those situations, so shooting it at a bandit in the sun makes the missile most likely go for the sun (large IR signature) rather than the aircraft.

@skyhorseprice6591 Жыл бұрын
The always-sneaky & unpredictable Tomcat. In that 1st fight, you got him into an offset 2 circle fight. So, when you decided to pull him into your HUD, man that big ol 'Cat slid around onto his 6 with the almighty, everlasting, eternaboogie _quickness!_ What was that, about 27° AoA/sec? Tomcat with flaps down in a WVR dogfight is not something at which we should sneer; the turning performance increases significantly, given that your straightline linear high speed dash capability becomes nonexistent. But hey, what good is dash/sprint capability if you get shot down during the turn fight? It being that lowering flaps on a Tomcat whlle maneuvering at airspeeds between 200KTS - 450KTS results in some markedly improved turn performance, one wonders why later Tomcat variants werent equipped with non-jamming Maneuvering Flaps for dogfighting. It would have saved pilots' lives and saved F-14's from destruction. Such a relatively simple thing, yet it turns the Tomcat into a badass rate fighter and even a 1 circle fighter. Its kinda like the F-4E Phantom, which (finally) had an internal gun and Leading Edge Retractable Extensions (sometimes referred to as LERX, other times as Leading Edge Flaps) that enhanced maneuverability by a considerable factor.
