On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

FACT: When they did Navy trial for the F-14A Tomcat in 1972 - 1973, the Navy tested by putting a high time F-4 Phantom pilot in the F-4 and a 30 hour F-14A Tomcat in the F-14A. They would set it up by placing F-4 behind the F-14 starting the attack with Tomcat completely defensive. Hoot Gibson was a veteran F-4 Phantom pilot and a test pilot who was placed in the Tomcat with barely 30 hours in the Tomcat. The F-14 would literally turn inside its own tail and get behind the F-4 Phantom in less than 15 seconds. Only 15 seconds for the Tomcat to go from fully defensive to fully offensive. Navy was astonished at the performance leap the Tomcat brought to the USN (previously, F-4 Phantom was completely outperforming the F-111B in trials before the project was killed). The Navy was so impressed that they declassified it and allowed Grumman and use that in their advertising in magazines.

To be fair, The F4 was the first true Multi-Role Aircraft that seemed to be able to do everything. The F14 was a Air Superiority Fighter with one highly refined job, to kill planes.

Not sure just how detailed the F-14's damage model is, but from where the warhead detonated (just behind the cockpit) it could conceivably have severed the wing pivot linkages allowing the wings to be blown back to full sweep by drag pressure. Or just an animation glitch, as someone else said.

Fun fact...when i got to my first duty station at Holloman in 1991 they had f15a and b. They found out i was from just up the just up the rad from McConnell AFB. They had ANG F4s. It turns out the summer before was Red Flag and the 2500+ hour Phantom drivers had kicked the snot out of the lieutenants and captains in their Eagles. I never heard so many insults fly about Phantoms and the ANG!!

the point of getting new designs that are superior comes from technological advancements, sure, improving old designs with new technology might make them much better but at the end it becomes a marginal profit, the difference between the f4 and the f14 is shorter than the difference between the p51 and the f86

I feel like the F14 is attempting to dogfight a passenger airliner! It's the first time I really seen the marked difference in technology, from the 60s to the 80s. F-15E is in a totally different class. Kills F-4E fast. The F-4E was survivable in combat multi-bogey scenarios because a good crew could build SA and stiff arm the threats. My limited F-15E time indicated that it was the best jet in the world until the F-22 showed up. In BVR battle, the LANTIRN was useful but probably cannot talk about that…

But since it’s a little heavier and less maneuverable than the Charlie variant, it would be interesting to see how it performs against the f4 which was designed as an interceptor and less agility in mind.

Have you ever tried the back flip maneuver in the f-4? Vietnam pilots did this to escape a jet on their 6 and instantly changed with the f-4 bring in the opponents 6! This maneuver is showcased in the Dogfight show with the pilot “Mugs” McKeon.

Great example of why high-training-hours air forces are so deadly. Very much a technical victory - know the perfect rate band, know how to get there, know how to hold it there. The sort of thing that only comes with practice. Free in simulator but translates to real life training strategy. There is no substitute for experience/familiarity with the aircraft when it comes to wrestling absolute max performance out of it.

When the F-14A was released in 1974 the primary AIM-9 model was the -J model not the all-aspect -L model (not released until 1977). You made things extra hard for yourself. 😉
