I’m 75 and having this procedure done on March 11. Looking forward to being fully functional again. Every video i have looked at says this is the surgery for me. I have prepared for it by buying easy to change clothes, training my husband to clean house and cook 😊, and making family and friends aware of what to expect. Guess I am ready for this change. Thank you doctors for this excellent video.

I am a 62 year old male and I had a RTS 6 months ago (via the NHS, I live in the U.K.). The post-op period was uneventful, physio went well and now I’ve got a full range of movement with the exception of being able to put my arm behind my back. Prior to the op, I had a lot of pain in the shoulder and that’s now completely gone, so (at 6 months post-op) I absolutely recommend this procedure.

Hello Nancy.... I'm now 6 months post surgery... the most transformative, greatest thing in my life was my surgery, which I have back now. My shoulder is now my kick ass shoulder when I was 20 years old... the range of movement is the best I ever had, the 24/7 pain and non use gone, I can sleep again, I ride motorcyces again, I work out. I give the credit to an amazing surgeon/healer, to God working through and with my surgeon, doing the physical therapy and a positive attitude. I wish you al the best ahead, do the PT, I was out of a sling 7 days after surgery!

This video is very helpful. I'm trying to recover without surgery from having my humerus yanked out of my shoulder joint and pulled down a couple of inches. I might be able to get a decent enough recovery using PT (which I started immediately after I fell). If not, I will have RTS. When I first learned about it, I was freaked out by RTS. The more I learn about it, the less afraid I am. It is a truly remarkable development. In addition to this video presentation, I appreciate many of the comments here and elsewhere by people who have had RTS surgery. Thanks everybody!

Six weeks post reverse total shoulder replacement surgery. Post op appointment Thursday and was told no more immobilizer. I was thrilled until I realized that 6 weeks with just assisted range of motion makes for a weak arm with pain by the end of the day. Oh, well, that's what PT is for. Two weeks of active assisted and passive assisted and then to strengthening. I will be doing amazing in a few weeks, I am sure! Thanks for this video. I have watched it a couple times. My husband had repair surgery done on both shoulders and the recovery was long and painful. When he was told that it had torn the right cuff again and more this time, he put off surgery so long his only option was to have RTS. We both were nervous when he finally had it done this past Jan. Boy were we surprised that the recovery was much better (I know everyone is different) and less painful. After only 3 weeks unless you knew he had surgery you couldn’t tell. He did have weight restrictions until the muscles healed but the pain is gone. He is still working on range on motion issues that he wished he had known about before (like twisting to wipe, or bending to hug) but not having the pain and being able to fish again has made all the difference.

I had a massive rotator cuff tear that my doctors didn't catch for a year-and-a-half because it really didn't hurt that much and I could use my arm normally and even sleep on it. I just couldn't pick up anything with my right hand. I had several sets of X-rays. After my third set of X-rays and my third offer of physical therapy I refused and said I need an MRI. Surgeon looked at the MRI and said it was not repairable. He said I would need a new shoulder and then gave me a cortisone shot. He said that would give me three months to think about it because I couldn't have surgery now because he gave me the cortisone shot. That shot was the worst thing that could have possibly happened to my shoulder because it caused fiery lava pain and it felt like some of my muscles were tearing. Wouldn't you know it's almost been 3 months and the fire is starting to leave my shoulder. I am really looking forward to a shoulder replacement. The recovery does look easier than a rotator cuff repair if I had a rotator cuff left.

I had the same with a ridiculous, orthopedic surgeon, who told me to sit up in bed and sleep that way for 4 to 6 weeks, and my shoulder would heal. I went to my orthopedic surgeon, not the one at the hospital, and he was shocked that my shoulder was still dislocated and fractured in four places to the point of being shattered, I am in so much pain that I can barely breathe. Nine days until my reverse shoulder replacement. I am still gob smacked that that one doctor wanted me to sit up in bed for two months almost and have a completely shattered shoulder repair itself by itself. SMH.

Great video! I have had this done on my right shoulder. At the time it was decided this was the best choice, I had no rotator cuff (at least that is what I saw told by my orthopedic surgeon). He had already done surgery on my right shoulder, basically completely rebuilding it for the same issue. He left this reverse shoulder replacement would give me a better outcome than the first surgery (the first surgery worked pretty well). Then he up and retired just before it was scheduled. His partner did it though. In both cases, lots of physical therapy, however with the replacement instead of rebuilding, I got to do movements much sooner. Little ones at first, but in both cases, I followed the therapist's directions and the Dr's directs to the letter. I had never seen the hardware before---very cool. The one thing I wish I had done once released from all restrictions (on the total reverse replacement) was work more on my deltoids. I didn't work consistently on making my deltoid stronger on my right side. It feels so odd when I palpate the shoulder! You can tell things aren't normal lol

i also had a total reverse shoulder replacement , i had the surgery on july 8 ,2022, id can not be how much my shoulder is already moving , i also have followed my post surgical protocol , and. the improvement from 3 weeks to 6 weeks is amazing. i must agree it does feel very weird when i touch it . i’m confident i’m gonna get most of my range of motion back , i had real bad range of motion from a previous open bankart procedure where they use 4 anchors to secure labrum back to glenoid . so as a result i had a tight shoulder that just progressively got worse over the years . i made the decision ot see a shoulder specialist at Hospital for Special Surgery. it was determined i needed a total shoulder however they couldn’t make a final determination of anatomical or reverse procedure until actually intra surgery . my dr was concerned about the prior surgery also cut my subscapularis . well i ended up with the reverse and so far all is well and i’m glad i did it all the prior arthritis pain is gone and i already have more range of motion.

I need to do a shout-out to the surgeons who developed this technique. I had a traumatic skiing accident that severed the head of my right humerus. The only option offered was RTS. I have been physically active all my life, so I didn’t want that and consulted other surgeons for a reconstruction, but the RTS gave the best outcome. I was so tense at surgery that my BP was through the roof but my HR was 62. PT was challenging but I pushed through it. 1.5 years later, I rock climbed an approx.85 degree edifice called Rooster Rock in the Columbia Gorge, Oregon. Yesterday I did a summit attempt on Mount Hood. I ate something disagreeable which sapped my energy so I failed to summit. I did get to 10,600 ft. I will attempt again next year. I carry a 40-50 pound backpack, put the strap at my neck. I have great range of motion and can reach behind my back and undo my bra strap (right shoulder RTS) with a little help from my left hand. I am an advanced skier and look forward to next ski season.i have scheduled mountaineering climbs the rest of the summer and look forward to them. I have returned to swimming. I find the breast stroke uncomfortable; I think because of the lateral movement. But all is good. So don’t lose hope, you will get your life back. My poor surgeon, who I stressed to no end, has asked for pictures and I have sent them. I have thanked him and the PT for giving me my life back. BTW I am 72 years old but that is not significant, there a lot of us out there living crazy lives. 😊 Thank you Drs. Brad and Paul for the excellent medical information you provide to help us make informed decisions. What's most interesting in my opinion and which is not mentioned is that because of the reversal, the rotator cuff ( a group of 4 muscles and tendons) which hold and stabilize the joint in place, cannot be used anymore, and only the deltoid muscle is used to hold the joint in place, and this is why the chance of dislocation is more likely (particularly after a fall)
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын
Yes thankfully still relatively uncommon but the reason it is done is because the rotator cuff doesn’t work anymore. That’s the indication for this procedure

I'm 44. I had a full thickness tear and Labrum tear in 2017. It was repaired and went through therapy. I have had numerous issues with it over the past few years. I had a specialist look at it in spring of 2022. He did the dye with imaging. There was another tear with not a lot of tissue. The doctor explained to me that 40% of people over the age of 50 have torn rotator cuffs, and that he didn't think it would be beneficial for me to have another surgery...even if I tore the ligament off the bone again. After doing some research and seeing this video, I got a little emotional. I've been there are times when my shoulder is so stiff, I feel it is the start of frozen shoulder. I've had injections, therapy and its not better. Thoughts? Thanks

I had my right shoulder repaired about 20 years ago, The operation went well and I was pain-free for about twenty years, then my shoulder began to be very painful again. My left shoulder became very painful about ten years ago. I was given physio and injections into the joint, but this didn't help so I saw a specialist, after more injections he decided I needed an operation. I had a scan done which showed arthritis in the shoulder joint and the shoulder only wanted cleaning out. I was operated on but without my knowledge, it was done by a trainee surgeon who did the operation under the guidance of a trained surgeon. After the operation, my shoulder was much worse. When I went back to see the surgeon he wouldn't examine me and said there was nothing more he could do for me. After months of constant pain, I was sent to see another surgeon. I had another scan done and this scan showed a 30mm rotator cuff tear, snapped tendons and a snapped bicep tendon. I was again operated on. After the operation, the surgeon said there wasn't much he could do for me as there had been too much damage done in my previous operation. I eventually managed to find another surgeon who said he could do a shoulder replacement on my left and right shoulders. He said he would start with the left shoulder. That was four years ago and because of health problems, it has been postponed four times. I now have a date for the first operation, that is if nothing else goes wrong. Nobody should have to suffer as I have.

The video informative, thank you. I have an old football injury to my left shoulder. The rotator cuff and labrum are torn, the former in several places. Osteoarthritic changes have occurred due to instability. Obviously I will need a reverse. Where is your practice located?

Six weeks of this sling post surgery?. I’m 2 weeks out and going nuts.
@glancycorner7425 Жыл бұрын
Of course, I spent six weeks with a sheared humeral head and shattered right shoulder in a sling before I could have the surgery.

What actually holds the joint in position if the rotator cuff is torn or damaged completely.
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын
Soft tissue tension. The parts are not actually held together. Like a hip replacement

Im a tetraplegic..or high functioning quadriplegic and have been for 28 years. Im in need of shoulder replacement on my left shoulder but im concerned about what ill be able to do after i heal. I have to transfer my entire body weight in and of bed, toilet shower ect and because of my level of injury the vast majority of the work is done with my arms shoulders and a little with my legs..with some therapy and stretching i could possibly do more with my legs but don't know how much more. Im just wondering what i should expect if i decided to talk to my doctor about this.
@TalkingWithDocs2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear this. It is hard to say as it stil require a lot of strength of the deltoid and rotator cuff. There is also a risk of dislocation depending on how the shoulder is loaded. Definitely worth a discussion though. Wishing you the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Have you had experience doing this reversed surgery on a person with Type 1 Diabetes? Is the healing time different? Hospital stay any longer? Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Gail. Type 1 diabetes does increase the risk of certain surgical complications but it is not a contraindication. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Thank you for the explanation of a reverse shoulder replacement, my appointment is on Thursday and not sure if that’s going to be the diagnosis. I’ve had both rotator cuffs repaired twice and both biceps attached so I’m thinking it’s going to be replacement time. I’m a big gym nut and how dependable are these replacements as far as weight training? Thanks

I had a reverse shoulder replacement 7 months ago after tripping and falling flat on my back. I am 72 yrs. old. I am better but my range of motion has not improved that much. Do I need to increase my PT at home and what exercise do I do to build up my deltoid muscle. I did PT for 3 months twice a week and had to stop because of insurance and probably didn’t do enough PT at home. I have to admit I was very depressed because the shoulder I broke was my right side and I’m right handed. I struggled not being able to work in the yard, paint and had a very difficult time fixing my hair. Is it too late for me to get more range of movement?
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын
Hi Janet. Getting range can be very difficult. Often you can improve out to one year but the gains are much slower the further you get from surgery. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@ZebaKnight Жыл бұрын
Hi Janet. I really empathize with you. (I also have trouble doing my hair!) I'm sorry that your insurance didn't cover more PT. That is our idiotic "Healthcare system" at its worst. Denying coverage for PT makes for more expensive medical care further down the line. Don't give up on PT at home. PT is harder and more painful as my shoulder gets better. That seems counterintuitive, but it is because I am stretching and working muscles that are tight and weakened. Maybe pay for one final PT session to ask what is safe for you to do, and make a plan for your work at home? I wish you the best of luck.

I am 37 years old, I have an irreparable total subscapular tear and had a pec major transfer to assist with restoring internal rotation. I now have OA set in on my shoulder and have big issues with mobility and pain. This procedure seems like a great option except for my age? Am I wrong? What other potential options do I have?
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын
It is an option but not ideal for 37. Limited other options. Worth a chat with your surgeon. Good luck
