I watch a LOT of car reviews, in addition to subscribing to multiple car magazines, and this is the first time I've seen anyone do a segment like your garage one. It's brilliant. Shade tree mechanics like me appreciate seeing the underside, assessing ease of maintenance and getting a mechanic's take on the dirty bits. Great addition.

I own one of these vehicles, and I love it! Deleted the muffler and fitted an AEM intake on there, and she sounds real mean (even though she's still gutless). At 40 MPG can't complain about the lack of HP, and the sweet shifting gearbox makes up for it in the "fun to drive" category. Great review!

@Stereo Typist Infotainment screen is a little meh- I reckon it needs shade cos it ends up in the glare too frequently. Also the tach is a similar digital screen which is not particularly bright and I wish it were a physical dial. Lastly the blind spot visibility is pretty terrible. Otherwise you get a solid little car that's cheerful, economical, and competent.

The fact that they give you that infotainment system for this price point is fantastic. The way they attach it I think is fine, its kind of like Audis, but without the motorized raised and lowering from the dash. Maybe if they would drop the screen into the dash half an inch, it would hide the ribbon cable.

I have a 2011 Mazda2 Touring with a stick. It is a brilliant car. I used to have an E30 for track days and this is funner to drive on the street. It is a statement to "it is better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow". The transmission and shifter are really nice and it gets an honest 39MPG average for me. It heel-toes beautifully. It has been dead nuts. reliable and currently has 125k miles. No timing belt to replace either. Looks waay better than the current one (as long as you don't buy the green one). Mine has white, pearlescent paint which looks amazing when the light shines on it just right. so simple to work on - if needed. I feel this is one of the most underrated cars built in the last decade. Have not taken it to the track yet.

I've owned the previous generation rio hatchback and I currently own this car. I put massive amounts of miles on both of them because of the nature of my work (Rio 255000, and a 2017 IA AT 170000 currently). My thoughts: The last generation Rio is a workhorse. It's engine never let me down....the transmission on the other hand started to slip at around 125000 miles. Electrical problems around the same time.... but never left me stranded....could have gone to 300000 miles no doubt. At 170000 miles the IA is still a pleasure to drive. It's strong suit is it's engine and transmission combo. They are by far the best in this segment. The engine feels so refined, quiet (almost like it's a Rolex watch) the transmission the best in this segment as well, quick shifts and the shift logic is second to none.... and not a hint of slippage (I haven't even changed the transmission oil from new!!!). (On the Rio I changed it every 40,000 miles) The new generation Rio is better I'm sure, hopefully they have strengthened the transmission....Most people will never put theses cars through what I've put them through in such a short period of time, Both are excellent values.. I paid about $3,000 less for the Rio.

I test drove this car 3 times in a 6-speed manual transmission, which is amazing by the way; it's such a good vehicle I put down a $500 deposit and I'm going to probably buy it on Sunday. The car is so good and has so many amazing features for a great price brand new you can't beat it. it's extremely hard to find a 6-speed manual transmission anywhere, especially these cars, and considering they're going to switch them from the Scion brand into the Toyota brand, which might jack up the price, I think now is the time to buy this in a manual, and I did. I believe this car is going to be possibly worth more in the future because it's so rare. Having a Scion 2016 IA 6-speed manual transmission which was only made for one year, or even less, is going to be and is extremely hard to find. This vehicle is just like the Mazda 2 which Mazda does not want to bring to the states for stupid reasons. I think this vehicle is a great guy and I'm willing to bet it's going to be a cult classic. Good luck finding a real-man's manual transmission. I did. Grab one before they stop making them and is too late.

I would never spend 20k on a new car. Instead I saved away for two years, drove a Toyota iQ for maximum economy and outright bought a near perfect Fiesta ST with 18000 miles on it for 13k minus trade-in for the iQ. That's a lightly used fun car for the price of the most basic city cars. I don't mind sitting in 5 year old tech at all. But I see your point, you really need to know some in order to avoid lemons. Got the car today and so far i really like it. As a daily driver, for me, it's perfect. I will miss my Mazda 2 but it's a more relaxed ride in the iA. Steering is a tad more engaging in the Mazda 2, but the interior is a step up in the iA. So it's a small trade off, not that the steering isn't good in the iA, because it's real good, the Mazda is just super. Trunk in the iA will hold a ton of stuff. Another great review! I have 2 points .... at 6:00 to 7:24 you make an interesting, thought-provoking point, and somewhere else you say something akin to that for the segment of the vehicle you can't expect it to be not noisy, and you also make mention of fit-and-finish issues in the cabin. Would you say the Elantra is in the same segment? Because it certainly beats it in the fit-and-finish and quietness factors... can we not now expect both good performance along with that? Lastly check out what's going on at 17:48 - as you manoeuver that knob, the whole center stack moves around with it - that's a gripe I've always had with Mazda interiors - you can do the same thing by putting your hands on either side of the center stack and move it side-to-side, or sit behind the driver seat and move it with your hands laterally... I think the effort to save weight everywhere, Mazda has made things feel lightweight - and cheap. As great as their styling is, and as great as the driving feel is in their cars, I think it's increasingly difficult for the consumer to overlook this when competitors are doing better - mind you I am not a person who has taken performance driver training, nor do I know much more about the mechanics of vehicles than the average lay person, so I don't have the same appreciation for Mazda as you show for its no nonsense approach and its performance...but I am probably more like your average viewer of your channel.
@savagegeese8 жыл бұрын
You are right, fit and finish and overall quality is not there like something you would find in the new Elantra. Things, move, sometimes rattle. But this is part of that B segment car feel. Feels very much like late 90s compacts. In a way its good because you can easily remove and replace most anything easily. Still simple, but yes in many cases has that cheap feel. I forgive it because their are very few good new cars for 16k anymore. Good points.

Awesome video. I'm currently between the Scion iA, the Mazda 3 hatchback, and the honda fit. Any thoughts? Plus, should I be worried that toyota is going to kill off the Scion brand?
@savagegeese8 жыл бұрын
+betoski The Mazda3 has had a pretty good track record thus far and even the Mexican version, which is where the iA comes from. Toyota is going to rebrand the iA a Toyota by end of year they have a contract for next 4 years with Mazda. I'd probably wait for the re-branding for re-sale sake. The Fit, well the car has had a colored start with quality issues, blown motors right off the the truck, panel gap and body issues along with some other oddities. I would hold out for a few years on it until the Mexican plant is sorted. So the answer is today - Mazda3, end of year Scion iA in a few years maybe the Fit.

I wouldn't worry about buying this car everything is pretty much going to be the same next year but just rebadge differently. The fit was more money but give you more room in the rear which was nice. I noticed the quality on the fit was not as nice as the Scion. Scion has great fit and finish. It also gets better mileage than the fit. The only thing nicer on the fit is it definitely has more room in the back. The Scion also drove better. If you need a car now I would not wait because you can really wheel and deal on these cars at the dealership right now

Hey Mark S. love the videos. I have some questions. Why does Mazda separate their shock from their spring on their torsion bar suspensions? Other car makers put their shocks in the springs. You can see this @4:55. Does it improve handling or is it just a cost saving measure? Also what did Scott mean about the gadgets having such an affect on the car @4:40? It seems Scott is a man of a few words, but in a lot of videos I wish he would elaborate more on what he means, instead of just saying one liners. So far I love this car. just a word of warning for anyone that has this car. The fast and loud idle from a cold start is not a mechanical problem. In the manual on page 143, it states it helps with gas purification.

+Von Ace The torsion beam has many configs using a coil over damper is often more time consuming for development. Its easier to setup spring rates and damping rates when they are seperate. Secondly, its cheaper. Lastly, its about packaging, often times there is not enough suspension space to the do a coilover damper or its less effective to do so. Scott called the plastic under trays gadgets because for so long cars never used them, now they seem like they are added on many cars without having any useful purpose. Glad you like the car so far, how many miles do you have on it?

Thanks SG for the info. I thought only Mazda did that setup. Those plastic under tray gadgets have no useful purpose? What does those plastic trays house anyways? Sorry total noob here. I got it in September, and it's almost at 800 miles.

I love it. It has great features for such a cheap price. And great gas mileage. It also drives really well, especially in turns. It's a Mazda after all and shares that Zoom Zoom DNA. As for hills, I've read that Scion IA/Yaris IA comes with hill assist feature. So that should help out with steep hills. The IA might feel under powered to you going up hills. I only have one hill I drive up from work and it's not really steep, but I do notice my MPG numbers are a little low compared to other drivers with an IA. I think hills will make your mpg go a little down. I haven't driven in bad weather yet so I don't know. I do know that the IA comes with traction control and stability control along with ABS. So I think that should really help out with bad weather driving. I hope this helps

Cool. Yeah if you have the money I would go for the Mazda 3 hatchback. I'm pretty sure the Mazda 3 has hill assist too. With that feature the car will sense if you're on a steep hill and will automatically keep the brake pressed for a second or two while you let off the clutch and get on the gas so that you won't stall.

I think people need to understand, that car enthusiasts usually like 2 types of cars. Sports cars and compact/sub compact cars. Because they are related in a sense, that an empty/base subcompact with no nonsense gimmicks and fake stuff- but a lively 4 cylinder can actually blow away a heavy midsize sedan with 300lbs of extra weight and all sorts of driver aids and safety features, but powered by a similar or worse output engine. Example: My mom drives a Hyundai accent base from 2009 i think. Even the windows are not power windows and the doors you gotta lock each individually with a key. That old school super base model, so base, that I was expecting that it doesn't even have AC and It wouldn't suprise me. That car as empty as it is, runs circles around my 2012 Chevy and beats me easily, whether it's twisty roads or 0-60.

Consumers should be able to return a car within 30 days if they don't like it. Full refund & no questions asked. It would make buying one so much easier.

Why didn't just get released as a mazda 2? When I buy it I'm just gonna take it back to the mazda 2 roots anyways

Did you not watch the review? Mazda didn't put it on the market in the US because sales wasn't doing well. And Scion didn't wanna make their own car because according to the review... Cost too much so they asked Mazda if they could have their Mazda 2 and rebadge it.
