As an owner of a 2017 Escape I can say that this vehicle should only be purchased AWD/2.0 engine. It is a completely different experience in this set up for not much mileage penalty vs the 1.5. Also, I'm of the opinion that Ford artificially prices high and then offers large discounts so you feel like you got a deal. For example, the sticker of mine was $34,450 but the sale price was $28,400.

+10tenman10 Serious question - why did she go with FWD on the 2.0L? I mean, torque steer on the 1.5L FWD is already prevalent, so I'd imagine it's even worse with the 2.0L's 275 lb-ft of torque. Also, why did she choose the Ford Escape over similar-sized and (subjectively) superior competitors, such as the CR-V and CX-5? Thanks in advance for a reply. Always curious to hear other people's thought process when it comes to cars.
@10tenman107 жыл бұрын
Robert Torres Ok I had a budget of $26,000 (paid $26,500 pre tax). Chose Ford because they offered $2,000 on a rusted 12 yr old Taurus (worth nothing) and $2,500 cash back (taxed--$2000 cash abd$500 if I financed, which I did for the minimum 3 payments). We drove the 2013 Rav 4 (didn't like the seats), CR-V (no negotiation), Mazda (no negotiation, more expensive). So far no problems. Good acceleration. Would probably buy the Honda CR-V if prices were competitive, presently. For me, I'm looking at the Lexus RX,maybe next year.

I leased a 2016 escape titanium 2.0 awd and I loved it. It pulled a decent sized U Haul trailer 600 miles each way back and forth over long steep grades from NJ to MI and that little ute pulled a trailer that was probably heavier than it at an easy 70 mph with no issues whatsoever. Great power, nice ride, very good sound system, excellent HID headlights, tight steering, and reasonable comfort. (We were packed in with my daughter's college junk) I liked the vehicle so much, I bought another one, a 2018 and was very disappointed. Same exact vehicle, fully loaded titanium with leather and the tow package. You can feel how much junkier its made. I didnt realize it until we made the same trip to Ann Arbor. They ruined everything that was good...less power, too much shifting from the trans, crappy HID headlights that have fake high beams : a fixed bulb with an "eyelid" that retracts to expose more of the bulb for highbeam. They took the power amp out of the stereo system, the steering ratio is really lousy now : too much steering wheel turn. Even the motor for the electric tailgate is starting to strip the gears. What a shame. I'm glad I leased this one too. I turned in the previous one with 19,000 miles on it, immaculate condition. I should've kept it. I looked for another preowned 2016 but many have well over 100,000 miles so they can't be that bad.

You would have liked the 2.0 liter engine better. That one is actually kinda fun, in an old school way. Unfortunately, the one that I rented (thanks Zipcar) was a 2.0 FWD (front wheels). The torque steer wasn't the biggest problem. It was that you could not get off the line without chirping the front tires. Stop sign in a quiet suburban street, chirping tires. Pulling out of a funeral,.. chirping tires. In the hood going to buy some drugs, chirping tires. Apparently, drug dealers REALLY don't like chirping tires. 😚

DO NOT buy an Escape with the 1.5L engine. The 2.0L Twin-scroll EcoBoost engine is ONLY $1000 extra! I repeat, the 2.0L engine is only $1000 extra. It gives you +70 hp and more importantly, +100 lb-ft of torque. It's a steal and worth at least 3x that price. It doesn't matter if you don't have a lead foot. The 2.0L is MUCH better in terms of power, drivability and resale value and real world fuel economy is almost the same as the strained 1.5L. Get the 2.0L with 4WD. DONE.

As others point out the 2.0 AWD is really really good. I rented one and it may also have had a sport suspension, i don't know, but it had a great combo of ride and handling. Handling super neutral and keep it balanced up to the limit and beyond with throttle modulation. The 2.0 turbo was really fun. This was a small ute that handled better and was more fun than some hot hatches. I was interested in buying one until I found out reliability is abysmal, I think it would take the fun out of owning one.

I have a FWD 2015 Fusion with the 2.0 and an AWD 2016 Escape with the 1.5 (or maybe 1.6). I know Ford changed the smaller engine but I don't remember what year. Anyway, the smaller engine in the Escape has plenty of power; I don't find it much different than the 2.0 in the Fusion. My chief complaint with both vehicles is the 6 speed automatic. The paddle shifters are absolutely useless. Put either in "S" and if you don't shift when the transmission thinks it should shift, it will shift automatically. The 2-3 shift in the Fusion is very slow, especially when cold and the shift from 4 down to 3 is very abrupt, feels like I am suddenly driving with a boat anchor attached. Both vehicles also down shift on hills with the slightest touch on the brakes, although the Fusion is more sensitive than the Escape. I can be doing 60, hit a down hill and they will shift to 4th gear and scream at 4000 rpm down the hill. Can't tell me that saves gas when every other automatic I've ever driven will more or less let the car coast at low rpm. Right now, the Fusion is averaging about 27 mpg overall (after 21000 miles) and the Escape is averaging about 28 which I consider is pretty good for an AWD. My last tank gave me 32 mpg. My '07 Mariner V6 that I traded for the Escape averaged 21.5 over all. Would I over look my transmission complaints and buy another Fusion or Escape, yes, because there are other features that Ford offers that other makers don't.

UPDATE: I’m sure I said something on this video before. but My moms 2017 Ford Escape had her engine replaced already (1.5). Second the transmission has a CVT feeling from 2-3 gear and it’s very annoying. Third this car is slow as shit and the steering wheel moves all over. Lastly. We have the 18’ rims and this car RIDES LIKE SHIT. TOTALLY SHIT. I was on a smooth freeway and felt bumps that WEREN’T THERE ! this car is too stiff. Oh and we get 22.6 miles per gallon, horrible. 31K$ I think And good job for being nice for the man of the other escape. It’s still the same car just faster. Still shitty.

Nathaniel Rudolph I owned a 2016 Ford Escape 2.0 ecoboost titanium all wheel drive, I had engine issues where my rpms would drop suddenly and the whole car would shake, and I also experienced an issue from 2nd to 3rd, but mine wasn’t slamming into third, or it would jerk into gear if I slowed down and started accelerating again. I was under 50,000 miles when this started happening. My local dealer kept blowing off the issues I was having so I gave up and traded it in. I’m never buying a ford product again with ecoboost.
@bigcrowfly7 жыл бұрын
Better off with a larger normally aspirated engine in real world driving because the tiny 1.5 engine forces drivers to use boost, killing mileage. Know several people with latest AWD Nissan Rogue (which does not have a Turbo or Direct injection like the Ford and Honda SUVs) and they regularly get 31 in mixed driving for whole tanks and just doing highway car computer shows 35-40 MPG.

My 2017 Escape SE 1.5L 4WD gets 25mpg using 87 octane gas. I've owned mine for about 1 year and put 13k miles on it. I've been more than happy with it especially in the snow. It handles great and all of the tech works (I got the Sync 3 technology package). A couple negatives for me: 1. You can't permanently disable the start and stop. Mine isn't as touchy as the video but still, I hate having the press the button each time I drive it. 2. The plastic at the top of the center controls/radio is just cheap. I wish they used a different material. 3. On mine, when you want to accelerate a lot, there's a slight delay before the EcoBoost kicks in. But once it does, you can get on it. 4. I worry about all of the tech and if something ever goes wrong. I'm definitely investing in the extended warranty for that reason alone. 5. There is no release (on the key fob or dash) for the tailgate unless you get the powered lift gate. Even my old 2009 Ford Focus had a button to release the trunk. If I bought it again I do think I'd go with the 2.0L 4WD with the technology package, cold weather package and powered lift gate. They just didn't have that combination at the dealership when I was there and my daughter had wrecked our Focus, so we needed to get a car that day.
@BillyBobDingledorf7 жыл бұрын
Sounds similar to our experience. Thanks to a wreck, we had to act fast. Picked up a 2017 1.5T AWD (I don't understand how they can call it 4WD). We did get the cold weather package, which is very nice. Even with the 1.5T, it feels better than the competition. I'm not sorry we didn't go with the 2.0T. The lack of a tailgate release is a bit odd, but you gotta lift it anyway. It drives like a dream. The HVAC is better thought out than any vehicle I've ever been in. Is it special? No. It looks like a RAV4, which looks liked a CRV, which looks like a Sorento, etc. If you're in the market for such a vehicle, should it be on your 'must drive' list? Yes.

I'm glad you drove the AWD version at the end. I don't know why you even bothered to test the bare bones 1.5-liter front-wheel-drive version. One of the things I dislike about car reviewers is that many of them become jaded about cars. They get so used to driving top-of-the-line $100,000 performance machines, and they forget the fact that there are lots of college students, blue collar moms and dads with kids who need basic, reliable, all-weather, daily driver transportation that gets decent mileage and doesn't cost a fortune. Everyone seems to love to watch reviews of Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Audi R8s, Nissan GTRs, etc. But how many people will ever get a chance to buy one, drive one - or even see one in person outside of a car show? What's worse is that some car reviewers aren't impressed with anything short of a $1,000,000 Ford GT. In my book - once someone becomes that desensitized, they need to take a long vacation from car reviews - or even consider a permanent change of occupation.

Unbelievable it took me 3 years to see this video. We have a 2013 model. Back then Ford still offers that 2.0T as an option on SE trim. We bought an FWD 2.0 SE for my wife because she just simply loves this car (and she still does). Over the years, we have seen many recalls on those 1.4T, 1.5T, etc. But the 2.0T just stays strong. After driving this for a month, I even bought a Focus ST which has the same engine (tuned for a bit more power) with a manual transmission. That torque steering you've mentioned is much more pronounced on my ST, probably because it has a 1:1.8 turn steering ratio. It was so strong that they have to add an E-torque-vectoring to reduce that. I have to pull the wheel to left if I am stepping down the gas. So I guess since I have experience with that, I'm okay with the escape. I feel exactly the same as you said, when you drive normal, it feels nimble and sporty. But when you drive any faster it is not as sporty as it seems to be. I have been following my friend's old Toyota Avalon onto a ramp, and I cannot even keep up when he steps down in the corner (and I have upgraded Pirrelli p zero tires). The suspension just not holding the ground and I hear the tires scream and feel the slide out. After I bought my 2017 sonata hybrid with those eco-focused tires, I can go faster around the corner than the escape. And yes, that noise level is high. Ford didn't bother to improve for all the past 7 years. If you got an SUV outsells everyone, why bother? The same goes for safety. This car has a shitting small overlap score. they improved a bit on the driverside in 2017 but still failed big time on the passenger side. And the interior quality is not good. I tried so hard to persuade my wife to upgrade to a Santa Fe or some japs even german SUVs, but she just loves driving this little escape. I have to admit, if you are only going to merge into the traffic or parking in downtown, this would be great. As long as you don't throw it into corners and you don't mind the noisy and harsh ride.

Why do I feel like I have already watched this video before? I remember Scott saying "You just don't like the Blue Oval. They sell these SUV's in order to make the trucks." Does anyone feel the same?

You pretty much summed it up: to make up for those trucks, RS, ST, V8 Mustangs and stuff, they gotta cut on all the other models to get their emission target.
@davereiland99217 жыл бұрын
How great can the emissions be when it's getting 21 mpg?
@RemX4057 жыл бұрын
In real world usage its 21 mpg, on the EPA test, it must be getting way higher. Trick with these boosted engines is, if you never get into big boost and drive them slow, they aren't thirsty, which is how they get good EPA ratings. However, everybody drive them into big boost all the time, which is how hey got 21 mpg out of a small 1.5L. Also, SUV in general are big, non-aero friendly heavy pieces of thrash, so of course any motor will have a hard time getting good MPG carrying this thing arround. Worse, they keep making them fucking bigger! I don't get why everybody get these giant things on wheels when they are 99% of the time alone in the driving seat, cargo empty, sitting in traffic with AC to the max.

You said this wouldnt be a good review but it was honest, and that's as good as they come. If I were looking at this car I would have considered better options after seeing how it drove and that's a good thing.

I've never driven the 1.5 EcoBoost. I have a 2014 with the 1.6 liter EcoBoost. I do wish I got the 2.0 EcoBoost with AWD. The quick low end torque from the 1.6 EcoBoost shreds the wheels too easily with FWD lol. 0 to 40 mph the car probably out performs most V6 engines in its class if you know how to launch without spinning and activating the aggressive traction control. I get consistent 23 mpg city with my wife driving it to work and me romping it here and there on nights and weekends. It also hauls ass up the mountains and doesn't loose power in the high altitude. It will also pull the big hills without even needing to rev over 3k rpms since the torque is there in the lower rpms. We plan on keeping it when it's paid off next year when I sell probably get an F150

I'm sure Scott loves the Escape because it's his bread and butter. I heard with the 06-07 model your mechanic will get to know you by name with how frequent it breaks down and the rear wheel wells rust out. I doubt it's improved much since then.

I am a big fan of the show. I really hope you get to review a new VW GTI. I think it would be a refreshing experience for you even with you and scott having a general dislike for turbo 4 bangers. Keep up the great work!

While I agree with the Goose on the 1.5, but I own the 2.0 and it is a good car. I recommend test driving these cars as there is a big difference in the 1.5 and the 2.0. I watched this video back when I was in the market for a CUV/SUV and stayed away from the car, but after test driving the two different engines I fell in love with the 2.0, even though I hate SUVs, but unfortunately I live in the north country and needed a good AWD vehicle that wont break the bank.

I have a 2017 titanium 2.0T and I love this cuv. I had a 2005 dodge durango w/5.7L hemi and I loved it for hauling/pulling a trailer. It was an absolute TANK and the 4X4 was excellent. That being said, there were many design flaws, especially in the engine area. The single most important factor in my decision to get rid of it was that the front rain gutter poured rain water directly onto the injectors causing a shit load of problems and the dealer wouldn't do anything about it. This dealership, located just outside of Chicago, Illinois, has a very bad reputation for being dishonest. My Escape, the Ford dealership... no problems. The 2.0T Titanium makes a lot of difference between it and the 1.5. I'm not sure if Ford even makes them anymore.

These guys must be either financed by some Japanese car company or something or just don't like that car. I have a 2013 Escape and I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH IT whatsoever. It is VERY quiet and it handles pretty well. I drive it at 80 MPH on a regular basis and it is very smooth. I don't know why these guys bitch, but to me, that car hasn't given me any problems yet.

Love the new camera quality! Also good job on the editing/production, that long slow intro for the music to the drive sequence was really well done. You're moving in the right direction keep that up. Short story here, up until recently I was moving cars for a local used car dealer between cities. I did little reviews for my friends, it was fun. Driving a bunch of different vehicles I looked at them in different ways. Most cars are generally just.. pretty good. They're new, they work, whatever. One day I was tasked with moving an escape to a dealer about 3 hours away. I like the kinda wacky Ford interior despite the fucking stupid numpad that's just.. Why!? But holy shit. This was a '14 or '15 Escape S. Base model, FWD. I Have never driven a more of a pile from a modern vehicle. Gutless, terrible mileage, not really that comfortable.Yeah I guess you can cram some shit in there but fuck, what a heartless car. I ended up out of sheer boredom driving it at like 3/4 throttle the whole way doing a MASSIVE 80mph out of the gutless 2.5L - also 2.5L, it should have some power/torque, but nah, it's shit. Computer listed 18mpg, burnt 7/8 tank in 3 hours, fuck. Yeah it could be better if you drove slower, but you should EXPECT better from a DECENT and MODERN vehicle which this car misses the take on. Anyways, I haven't driven it but i image the 1.5 ecoboost with *less power* but a tiny bit more torque would be just as much a fucking taint-heap. It's just, infuriatingly, and wholly unimpressive for what it should be. Anyways again, good video, keep up the good work.

Im driving my pops 2017 escape w 2.5l norm aspirated. Averaging 24.5 hand calc. Not bad. Yep, 1.5 turbo is stupid. Better off w 2.5 non turbo or 2.0 turbo. This review sounds like you have little experience w sub 20k vehicles. Ive owned 160 vehicles since 1990. Incl e36 m3s boxters, civics, etc. Im looking for a 15 to 19k new suv. What would u suggest i also look at?

I drive 2018 4wd 1.5l escape. It does lack power. However, ive done a lot of off roading, washes, flooded washes, steep soft sand hills. and the 4wd/AWD system works pretty well. Only thing i dislike besides power and it cant fit LT AT tires without modification. I do like how easy it turns when off roading and getting through small spots

I drove a 1.5 ecoboost AWD to see if CR's 0-60 of 10.1 seconds was correct, and it is. The 1.5 AWD is slower than my previous 2013 C-Max Hybrid 8.4 secs and the 1.5 doesn't feel like it has any reserve power. The 2.0 ecoboost AWD is much better and makes the Escape fun. It's almost like the Escape needs to have the 2.0 turbo the way the Cherokee needs to have the 3.2 V6.
