I've owned precisely one Passat. As you say, hideously unreliable and hideously expensive to fix. Buy a BMW if you're in Europe. Or a Mazda. Anything other than a VW Group car.

kimi17147 sure old vws can be reliable but I hope you can bring yourself to terms looking at reliability records of modern cars :) VW is not as bad as people make them out to be but nearly all the Asian brands still have less problems per veh.. www.truedelta.com/car-reliability-by-brand?min=2000&max=2016

Asian cars do nothing for me, as far as owning VW's I have done that, 2004 Golf, 2006 Passat, 2011 GTI, 2012 Passat 3.6, 2015 GTI, 2016 GTI PP, 2017 Golf R. Now that is 7 VW's with a combined mileage of 400k miles and guess how many problems I had???? This is also with tracking the last three and beating the crap out of each car ever day......... 0 other then recalls.... now I service my car regularly and make sure that all of the maintenance is up to date. Are VW's the most reliable car company???? Absolutely not, not even close but from my experience they have treated me just fine.

+kimi17147: I ran a BMW 528i to over 380,000 miles without incident. Glad you've not experienced the issues I had with my 06-07 Passat. That was horrendous. Current Mazda 6 is a very nice drive. Much more involving than even the current Passat. Thanks for replies!!

Like most German auto makers, the exterior changes between versions of the same model is very subtle. Think 5 series for example, even folks that have no interest in cars will be able to pick out a 10 year old 5 series at a distance. German manufactures know that if a model changes drastically every 3-4 years then owners will loose a pile, come resale as no one wants the "old shape". This kind of understanding builds brand loyalty .

bo jangles, good point. I have to concede that the styling isn't very lively, but it will probably age well. It shouldn't look weird after 10 years when people would otherwise think the styling looks bizzare or tacky.

For US people, a Passat with 3.6 litter V6 is a mid size car !!! For me a Passat is too big to fit in my car park. how do they see my 208 or a K car : a toy ? We don't live in the same world
7 жыл бұрын
Madeline Monahan, sorry, but some people, here in the US, just simply like more space... not because we're all overweight. ...even my Czech wife insisted on buying a "mid-sized" SUV. and trying to fit into a clown car (Yaris) isn't that fun when you're over 6' tall.

My mom replaced her '13 Passat TDI with a '17 Passat 1.8T and I think the refresh did wonders for the car. My biggest gripes with the '13 was that it was sorely lacking in the tech and infotainment department and I hated the halogen headlamps. With the '17, all that has been rectified; it has park pilot, park assist, apple carplay, ACC, BLIS, LDW, etc. You are also definitely right about the steering though, the '13 felt way better than the '17.

Wrong version. The Passat has to be bought as a station wagon. The limousine was always an after thought. In Germany it is rarely bought as an limousine. It's for families because mini vans were never a thing in Germany. Only in the last 10 years this changed quite a bit.

So I got rid of my BMW Z4 and winter car a bmw 323. Bought the vr6 Passat 2017 used with 12000km. It was functional. Great transmission. Great engine. Just really boring but got a good price And had a year and a half of Warranty left. After 6 months I got rid of it for a bmw m240. Kids are grown. Don’t require rear seats that are usable. My favourite part of my day is driving to and from work. I look forward to it. Best all round car I’ve owned that I can drive in the snow. Catching up on videos with the present plague so this comment is not timely.

I just happened to have picked up on Gran Turismo yesterday. I got so distracted by the starting sound that I half expected the Tie Fighter to scream by to start that "Lose Control" song, haha. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIjdcnWkhq2Nbsk). ONTO THE CAR: I like it. The styling, especially. Yes, it's kind of classically "Passat" in how it somehow manages to have that valedictorian look (not ugly but not attractive), but for some reason I'm _super_ into how it's unique in how it's a straighter, thinner design that evokes what cars of old used to have. I just kept NOTICING how thin and simple the lines are wherever you look. Or at least compared to how bloated, chunky, and aggressive curves and angles have become. It just kept making me think of what a Passat from the 80's would look like if modernized without going crazy. So yeah, I'm digging it. Looking forward to more designs like this.

I briefly owned a '16 and then a '17 Passat R-Line. It's true what he said. It's bland yet has big style. The 1.8T is good. There needs to be a 2.0L turbo option since there is a huge gap up to the 3.6L V6. Resale is horrible.

J O, The reason for the V6 is not so much a sporty option, it's to have a less complicated normally aspired engine, with plenty of power, V6 smoothness and reliability.
7 жыл бұрын
Madeline Monahan, I'm from the US. As for merging onto highways, I've never found the 1.8T to be lacking when merging. Even on the shortest entrance ramps, I can hit 60mph (starting from around 30mph) using just 3rd gear.

J O, I didn't say this in my comment, but I meant V6's in general have been reliable, long lasting engines. I actually have a Jetta 1.8T, it does have good power, but has cost me $6,000 in repairs over 80k miles.

Good review with a lot of insights I've not heard elsewhere. The noise and the dead steering wheel in particular were standout observations. It sounds like this would be the perfect company car for a cement salesman or carpet pattern designer. I totally agree on the DSG- the one in my Mk6 GTI is amazing except on holding revs. I went from a manual to the DSG and would have a hard time giving up the versatility and function of the DSG for the pleasure of working the shift knob. The Manuel is just not as good most of the time. The DSG is perfect in traffic and in carving up the mountains. It holds boost. It doesn't wear me out in stop and go traffic. It is built like a tank. I can easily change the expensive-ass fluid ($150 every 40K miles). As for what this might mean in the future - be still my beating heart! Does this mean more Vee Dubs might be making their way through your gizzard and out ontoKZbin? I want to see and hear your thoughts on the GTI and possibly the R. Also the Jetta. I have to wonder why someone I know got rid of her very distinguished brown Jetta for a hideous white Camrolla.

THANK YOU for this review. It has been impossible to find a facelift passat review with the VR6 from an enthusiast channel. Sadly we didnt hear what the shop had to say, but he doesn't really say much anyway. I think this car in its stock form is quite bland. But with tasteful mods to suspension and wheel/tire combo they look amazing. Actually the R-line version looks pretty nice already from factory. Sadly no VR6 engine in it. The Passat like a lot of current VW America cars; it is best explained as possessing Germanic touches here and there, but you can't help but feel since 2012 to try and chase sales, you feel Americans holding the Germans who are designing VWoA cars on a very short lease, constrained by costs & being mindful of Audi's lineup. This is NOT THE CASE in VW Europe where the European Passat can be equipped with exquisite touches & options (e.g. 3-zone climate controls, HUD and the Audi-derived virtual cockpit) that would make a BMW 3 series or Jaguar XE look downright rental grade. Even the powertrains are more advanced; 2.0TSI from the Golf, a beefier 280hp variant, a 240hp 2.0TDI biturbo and even a 211hp GTE plug-in hybrid variant. It is sad because Americans put too much emphasis on the badge of their cars that VWoA cannot share a common global design (e.g. Ford) as VW risks scaring off customers who see a ~$40k Passat and instead go for a base spec Audi A4 instead.

Is it just me or it looks worse than the EU version? And it has a 3.6l engine? In Passat? Jesus, fuel consumption of that must be absurd... just checked: it's 10.2l/100km, hahaha, I have '99 Cougar that eats 8l/100 and that's already too high for daily use. Though to be fair: 280 hp is quite awesome. The most powerful Passat one can get in the EU is 260hp 2.0l TDI (5.7l/100km) Still it's rather silly to buy Passat for hp...

The problem with the DCT V6 Passat is the 35k buy in price. Audis own A4 is a worlds better machine for only a few thousand more. That is exactly what Vw hopes you will do. How is it that the same company that built the razor sharp Golf R, also built a waterbed masquerading as a family sedan?!? :/

Say what you will about the design approach (i.e. stark minimalism and understated sophistication), but I personally wish more manufacturers would take cues or use a similar mindset/approach when designing their own products. V.A.G. vehicles tend to age exceptionally well, you look at their elegant, unobtrusive, and inoffensive designs, and they tend to last well past the expected lifetimes of the vehicles, where a lot of the more daring competition may appeal more greatly now, but tend to look far more obnoxious or out-of-place on the road as they age. And, again, say what you will about VW reliability, but if you spec out your models smartly (stuff like the 1.8Ts instead of 2.0Ts, or 3.2 NAs instead of 3.0Ts, etc) and you'll find astonishingly dependable, solid vehicles.

Hey man have you seen the ATS-V video where the Cadillac engineer goes over the whole car and details its cooling/aero etc? It's damn amazing, you have to see it. Jalopnik also posted a article on its SIX cooling radiators in the front and on the bottom. Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnmaXpyQia2smJY

Very German boring look to this car. I prefer the newest Toyota and Nissan designs. Interior fake wood does look better than the Genesis you recently tested...as this car's wood lacks inappropriate sheen. This car is for people who look at cars as an appliance. May they thoroughly enjoy it. Road noise is quite apparent during your drive. That's odd in a German car. Is that lazy steering hydraulic or electric ?

I stumbled upon this video to see a review on this car. My attention turned away from the car to the landscape. At 9:00 I recognized that old house on the right and realized you're filming where I grew up in IL. I have to say you were very ballsy for filming in Bull Valley. Those cops are sneaky and will pull you over for going a mile over the speed limit and other petty things. Great roads to test drive, but you have to constantly pay ridiculous attention to how you drive.

Seems to be a generation behind the European version? That's not all a 'bad thing' because the latest Euro is saturated with parallel lines. Right across the dash and all round the body in a way. Perhaps the American version seen here will soon get a major update to match/catch up?

still not buying a vw product. Problems always show there face after 3 years if it's not a diesel. Toyota and Honda have some boring cars to drive, but they are very reliable.

The Passat is cavernous. Take the overall size of the car into consideration, with say, a Ford Taurus. Interior on the Passat is huge. Taurus is a FULL sized car and the interior space is a joke.

There's no diesel anymore and they no longer offer it with a manual transmission. This car sucks compared to what it was a few years ago and let's not forget that it looks like it came straight from the early 2000's. The 3.6 is nice though.

Yes, the front end does look a little dull, but its a whole lot better than these other ugly cars that look like a catfish with its mouth open or some sea creature. I think the Passat would look really good if the front end was like on the Golfs. From the side the Passat is beautiful imo.

G? I drove European Passat, now I move to USA and bought American Passat. I’m pleasantly surprised how American Passat it’s bigger, more comfortable and cost 10 000 euro less. I’m talking about R line. Exterior also looks better. Only think I like better on European passat It’s dash even if it’s not big different, but comes with digital speedometer.

Yes that DSG is a sweetheart and if you read up on it you will see the functionality of a DSG has it all over the traditional automatic. I am talking QUICK and SMOOTH and all about getting it done and done right. I had one in my 13 TDI Passat. There is a sort of expensive maintenance interval at 40K with the DSG but if you’re like me you’re out of the car at 40-45K anyway. I am old school so I do not think that six cylinders should cost as much as they do in the modern day market but then you cannot get them on many cars so I think the supply and demand may come into play. I currently have a 1.8T Passat and although it will do 100mph on open highway I recently had my butt handed to me by a V8 Tundra (off the light no less). Not only did he hand me my butt he beat it so bad I am still trying to figure out how that heavy beast overcame gravity the way it did. Oh yeah it's that mean V8 right. On the flip side I can leave 4 cyl Hondas in the deep dust and that goes for Corollas and Camry’s.
