These last few years we've seen an explosion of new Sim Racing on the scene. One of the brands that's generated a lot of hype is Asetek Simsports.
Asetek Simsports impressed us with their Invicta and Forte pedals, and we have been eagerly awaiting their wider ecosystem with extremely high expectations. They've sent us both the Invicta (27NM) and Forte (18NM) Bases, as well as their Forte wheel, so let's dive in and take a detailed look.
In this first video, we're starting with the Invicta base to see what the best of the best brings to the table in terms of build quality, user experience and of course driving experience, then in the next video, moving into the comparison with another video comparing the Forte to determine where the best value sits. Importantly there is also a La Prima Wheel base which has a peak torque of 12NM, we will be checking that one out as soon as we can get our hands on it.

Thanks for putting this up, I wrecked my wheelbase side quick release and had to get replacement from Asetek. I was one of the person that raised it as a concern to Asetek. Even their video is edited to remove the portion of the video which moves the base side quick release.

Huge appreciation for the effort as far as production quality and editing. Gonna have to give Asetek's products another look, but even though it appears a better choice on paper I'm finding it hard to get past the idea of a Simucube being the ultimate option simply because of the very well-established reputation - same reason James Baldwin said the Invicta brake pedal was the best he's ever felt, but I'm still just wanting Heusinkveld. Interesting times - thanks for being a legend as always

I know exactly what you mean. Its still early days and they have a long way to go to prove themselves. Reviews are onyl a tiny piece of the picture. We'll soon know how the products stack up in real customers experiences. I havent seen much negativity toward the pedals from customers though, other than just people who found them subjectivly unsuitable.

Finally finished watching, my main disappointment with this is really the mounting underneath the wheel base! Just like with the new Thrustmaster wheelbase, why not use existing dimensions, to ensure that we all can mount the bases to existing rigs without having to drill holes? It seems like a silly product development overlook/decision.

I appreciate the honesty in acknowledging your partnership with Asetek. That’s how all the channels who do product reviews should operate, so good on you man. I’m “stuck” in the Fanatec ecosystem for now with the DD2, shifter, handbrake and too many of their wheels to jump ship, but based on what I’m hearing, I might be selling soon and going an alternate route, just not sure if I want to go the Asetek route or wait a bit and see what a couple of the other big boys come out with in response (if anything?). Either way, great job as usual. Like so many others, I started down this rabbit hole when CV19 hit and you were one of the first I came across who put out consistent, fair reviews and great racing content, so I try to watch everything you throw up that pertains to me (mainly ACC and product reviews atm). Cheers and keep up the great work! You’ve earned your position in this community and should be proud of all you’ve done to share your passion and help bozos like me come to grips with things! 😉 Happy Racing! Jason

Is it just me or does seem to not be worth the asking price? A few build quality issues and technical "anomalies" the QR issue is a big red flag for me, stiffer spring or not. Plus, for me being in the US the price isn't really worth it compared to other bases available right now. Might be more attractive for our friends in EU. Amazing content as always Will.

@JanLarsen1984
@JanLarsen1984 Жыл бұрын
A couple of things spring to mind - the QR is an area of concern, durability wise, if you mount and dismount the wheel a lot. But I was surprised to see the mounting issues/choices on the base and the general little quality issues here and there.
@MrMikap74
@MrMikap74 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I was surprised too. Some of the issues could have been fixed or prevented so easily if they came up with a better, or less complicated solution. I have mixed feelings. I am a bit dissapointed. And besides the issues and durability concerns, I don't like the looks of the wheel. On the other hand I like the transparency of Asetek and I am convinced quality control will improve in time. The intentions are good. And more important, I do like they didn't outsource the production to China

With f1 22, would you say that it feels different on this vs a csl elite? Or a csl dd? My next base was going to be a csl dd but I really like the look of this. But obviously if the difference is negligible between this and a dd then it’s not worth it. I’m really hopeful that there’s enough detail in the actual game that any upgrade from a csl elite is worth it

A few months on, where do you stand with this product? I noticed in your latest videos you are still using the SC2 as your main. I'm looking into this or the SC2 Pro and having trouble deciding. The additional slew rate is nice here, but i'm not very confident with how the wires go through the motor and having to move the quick release to attach to my rig seems risky. Any chance I could get your input?

Hey Will! First of all thanks for the great review as usual. Please tell me what you think about my idea. I have a Simagic Mini, I would keep my wheels (with the ''female'' quick releases) and I would fit the male part of the quick release to the Invicta motor using the VRS DFP adapter (looks like both motors have the same shaft size). Yes I know all my wheels would be connected via USB, wich they already are. Thanks!

Dude, I noticed you said you were nitpicking a lot. Keep up the nitpicking. These companies seem to respond to it very well! After all, at this point it would seem that the market for wheelbases is pretty solid, but it’s these everyday little nitpicky things we have to live with on the products on the daily basis. Unbelievable work you put in. like many others, I have made my decision for a la prima combo based primarily on your review of it.

do they make a Quick release so i can attach other steering wheels onto the base, than just asetek ones?
@anthonyhj559
@anthonyhj559 Жыл бұрын
I think this wheelbase has 2 major flaws, first is the quick release and the fact you can mount only one wheel on it currently, they said they will make and adapter so you can put 3rd party wheels, but I think you should always be able to put your own quick release just like you can in simucube. If someone wants to change from simucube or vrs, or some or fanatec they can't just change the QR on the base, they have to buy one for every single wheel which is not good. The second thing is the mounting. They could've made this compatibe with both fanatec mounts and with simucube mounts, at least I think they could, if it's not panented on some way. But no, you have to buy special mount, and if you wanna use something new and awesome like asr pro mount which you will be able to buy by itself for your P1-X for example, you can't use it. Sure, you can drill holes, and I'm sure there will be 3rd party adapters and such to fix some of these problems, but they could've made this way more simple and compatible.

@Plymouyhian
@Plymouyhian 6 ай бұрын
The quick release is the one thing that is in the way of my considering a jump to this motor. I have the wheel shown here and Asetek Invicta pedals. I am currently using a VRS motor with xero-play QR. I have another rig of the same type (GT Omega Prime) with a Fanatec DD2 and Heusinkveld Ultimates and I like the VRS/Asetek combo more. I'd consider dumping the DD2 given how Fanatec customer service has become but the QR is the lynchpin.

@boostedmedia
@boostedmedia Жыл бұрын
Hard to say. I have a feeling the way they measure their slew rate may be different from how Asetek measure theirs, and if thats the case then the Simucube motors may not be able to physically match the response time offered by the Invicta base. But in terms of all the other aspects we discussed I'd say yes. Remember though we are talking about very small differences. Ultimately all the top tier direct drive bases are pretty awesome these days and you're going to be satisfied regardless of what you buy.

Hey will, Would you say you need less interpolation filter/recon with the asetek base, to get completely rid of the sandy feeling around the center on iracing? The sc2 needs a recon of 6 to be really smooth, but then everything else is a bit delayed and washed out. On 3 its great, but the center and direction changed in general are a bit grainy. Small question, I see you lowering the wheelbase output but what's your game gain? I prefer to lower the output of the motor in the driver to the maximum amount of torque I ever want to feel, I then adjust my in game setting to fine tune to the amount of torque I want to feel with regular driving, and check to ensure there is no clipping. In theory it makes sense to want to make use of the full dynamic range available, but personally I dont want my arms to be torn off in a crash.

Very good question and something I probably should have made clearer in the video so thanks for asking. Half our testing with the Invicta and all our testing on the Forte was done with the new firmware fix and it made no noticeable difference unless the interpolation filter was set to off, which most people wont be doing anyway because things start to feel a bit robotic. So I don't personally see it as a concern.

I’ll still use the SC2 Ultimate on the main rig. The Invicta is unfortunately unsuitable as it won’t blend in as well and I would need to buy hub adaptors for about 30 wheels. I think anynody coming from a belt driven wheel to direct drive feels that rubber band feeling at first. Was the firdt thing I noticed. Due to the speed and the way it can snap back and or fight back. We adapt then other wheelbases we test we don't notice that on as much even going back to your old settings it wouldn't feel as much that way now since you are used to it. But I do get what you are saying and dampening helps take that down. The asetke imo is very bounce and springy bit it's not lacking the details when doing it. But you can see the detail on the asetek it's pretty insane and the forced that push it back to center when turning it's insane. It reminds me of the dd+ now I know why people are saying they feel so similiar. Same type of ffb implementation. People need to stop worrying oscillations when taking hands off the wheel getting rid of all of them on asetek, sim magic or the dd+ will reduce details that make them feel so good! So yeah I lobe center forces and I love wheels I can still feel when going straight. Not uncontrollably either but a nice feel. Also your slew rate on the asetek is only 6.7nm/ms your simucube is like 8 but I do agree asetek and dd+ both feel like the slew rate the bonce back the details are a little better on these. It really practically catches themslves on slides you don't have to think about it it's like ir drives itself. I've never felt a wheel where I catch a slide and go oh wow was that me or the wheel? Until I felt my dd+ its perfection. They sre so fast you can go through the quick turns back to back and feel it just spring to the other direction now you can dampen that but me I like it. Me I like a little dampening so when I turn it feels a little more natural and not overly springy or jumpy but it's so nice having that boost.

I can say firsthand the quality control is an issue so far with Asetek sim sports. I’ve had their Invictus paddles since launch and already have a broken clutch arm and a leaking Thorpe hydraulic cylinder. I already have a support ticket open for three weeks now so customer service hasn’t been the best either. Instead of doing the right thing and sending you out a new set of pedals, they send you parts for you to repair yourself, which took hours.

Hopefully their quality control gets better as I’ll be in the market for either this or Simucube. Simple things like mounts not fitting properly is a big turn off imo. Im a machinists and those sort of stuff happens when quality control is low or maybe their blueprint tolerances are off. Simucube build quality and reliability will definitely be hard to beat.

So I just received the Invicta wheelbase and forte wheel. It’s fantastic and I’m really glad I made the change from the fanatec dd1. The FFB feel is much better detail, faster change/slew and I like the open QR ecosystem that will allow other wheels soon (June release of the QR adapter). I think I would have also been very happy with her forte wheelbase like Dave cam and boosted media says re: the maximum nm of torque, but I was able to go for the Invicta to get the max slew rate. The software js fairly good given its new, getting better with releases and active discord support folks every day and a feedback channel, I expect more software refinement there over time. I looked at the sc2 pro as well. Clearly asetek is invested in this higher end market, but honestly they made a design mistake by forcing the purchase of their mount due to their bolt pattern/hole size of 87mm which is stupid and a cash grab for buyers to get their mount or drill your own holes if you have a flat mount. Too bad as they could have avoided that complaint which is common, not a deal breaker but something to consider and know ahead of time.

@@Justdigit2 yes I really like it and it’s noticeable over the DD1. And the open ecosystem with the quick release coming this month means you can use a lot of different wheels. Fanatec has good stuff for sure but you are locked into their ecosystem, their quick release is terrible and the slew rate of the motor and ffb is not as quick or detailed. I know it’s a subjective thing but I am glad I sold my fanatec gear (it went quickly for a good prove) and switched over.

How is the QR system open? You still have pay for an Asetek QR and then if you wanted to change wheelbase would have to change all your wheels. Compared to fanatec, yes it is slightly more open in the sense that they will work with wheel manufacturers to have the QR already fit but you're still paying for the privilege, just slightly more convenient. The QR does look better quality than Fanatec however, of course that's a low bar.

Potential issue with slip ring tech is that you're primarily just using the same small area of the full rotation. And this is going to wear first. But still a good design and materials should last a long time.
@gxti
@gxti Жыл бұрын
That was the first thing that jumped out to me. The conditions under which the slip-ring was rated are unlikely to be anything like what a sim wheelbase goes through. I hope it works out for them though, because the possibility of having an integrated bring-your-own-wheel quick release with USB is very appealing, although it doesn't sound like they're offering that right away.
@jinx20001

i was initially concerned with the slip ring design aswell until i did a little research to figure out how long it might last, if you do a 24 hour race at SPA the record amount of laps is 589... 20 corners per lap, do that 589 times is 11780 corners... lets say you do two 24 hour races a week so a solid 48 hours a week of driving that would be 23560 corners, in one month if you were to do two 24 hour races a week thats 94240 corners a month, keep that up for a year and you are up to over 1 million turns... this means after 5 years or so the slip ring on a moza R5 would be finished (MOZA claim 5 million rotation lifespan on their slip ring)... lets not forget asetek rate theirs to 200 million, 1 million turns a year you should get 200 years out of it right lol lets take into account FFB though, corners are not 1 smooth motion, the wheel probably shakes left and right 3 times in one corner right so lets call it not 20 corners but 60 corners, that still comes out at about 3.4 million ''rotations'' a year... the moza would be finished in under 2 years, the Asetek will last 58 years... and thats doing two 24 hours of spa a week, every week for 58 years. By the way i know this is far from a realistic scenario and there are way more things to consider, i absolutely dont think the slip ring will last 58 years even if the rest of it does, but i think we could realistically see 20 years out of it with no issues.

have to say... i was really on the fence about buying one of these and selling my simucube and honestly im still on the fence, im so close to ordering one but i cant ignore the little issues here and there, i dont think i can replace my simucube with this with a clear no worry conscience, i think knowing the QR can pop off under load would be in the back of my mind for example, when i had a fanatec DD1 even though it drove ok i knew there was play in the QR and every now and then i would wiggle the wheel in disappointment wondering if it feels any worse or better etc... i just couldn't deal with it in my mind and it had to go. gosh i dont know.... i do really wanna order this, convince me not to please haha.

Great review, found the quick release a bit concerning since a lot of guys do hold/support themselves with the wheel while getting in and out of their seat and a disconnect/pop off like that might get them hurt me including. Also as a past fanatec user, seeing pins in a quick release gives me nightmares, you forgot to mention if there is a chance for them to break in some way as that is a major no-no for me personally. How come you never use simagic bases in the charts for comparison, a lot of people believe they have currently the best sim racing range out there?
