FIRST GLANCE
I’ve been wearing the hell out of these boots, so you can see the leather is a bit beat up, but I think it has done so in an attractive way. There are a lot of differences (like the Dowler doesn’t have a Goodyear welt) but the aesthetic and silhouette are reminiscent of popular dress/work boot hybrids like those from Thursday and Parkhurst, albeit with a more bulbous toe.
Still, it hues close to the foot, it’s pretty low profile, and it works well with a button down and chinos or a t-shirt and jeans.

LEATHER
This is full grain, vegetable tanned calfskin, but it’s a lot hardier than most calfskin boots I own. It’s usually used in dressier shoes but the leather is both rugged and pleasing to the eye. It comes from an Argentinian tannery outside of Buenos Aires, but the boots are made in Colombia by hand.
LEATHER CARE
You’re advised to polish these every week or two, which seems like a lot - I haven’t polished mine at all and they look pretty good after a few months. When you condition the boots, a waxy polish like Saphir Renovateur should do the trick.

SOLE
Everything in the sole is leather: a leather outsole, midsole, and insole - there’s no cork at all. I have mixed feelings about leather soles: they’re flexible, soft, they have good groundfeel. But they have crappy grip and they look really scratched up and ugly after you’ve been wearing them for a while. When they’re beat up the grip improves, but they’re not much to look at, aesthetically speaking.
The upper is attached to the sole with a Blake stitch, which makes for a lighter shoe than a Goodyear welted boot but it’s a little harder to resole.
Note that the pull up leather versions of this boot have a flat rubber sole.

FIT & SIZING
These are true to size, I got an 11.5 and they fit fine, while most boots (like Red Wing and Wolverine) are an 11 on me.
I really like the fit: it hues close to the foot, it cradles my foot nicely, and there’s a shank in there that gives great arch support. Combined with the soft-ish feel of a leather sole, and I found the boots really comfortable.

Worth mentioning that if you like leather soles, but the lack of grip on wet surfaces scares you, you can take your boots to a local cobbler and have them glue sole protectors on. My local guy charges maybe $20 and they last for a year or two before you need to replace them, which is cheaper than a full resole. And, the grip on wet floors or surfaces is much better.

Great review Nick. I have a pair of pull up leather in Walnut I got about 2 months ago and I'm very happy with them. There's been no creasing of the leather and the pull up leather models have a rubber sole which I prefer. I think Beckett Simonon is the best bang for the buck boot out there.

I have these boots for a little over 2 years. Once thing I wish I would’ve done was conditioned them with Bick 4 before I wore them. It made the leather significantly softer and made the creasing a little softer. I think had I conditioned before wearing the creasing would’ve been kiss significant.

Cool review, and I love the production quality of your videos as well, thanks for the amazing content. This boot looks remarkably similar to AE First Avenue boot, which is one of my favorite boots - VERY comfortable and gorgeous patina work, the leather is very high quality, just a fabulous boot. Minimal creasing, using shoe trees and leather conditioner. I think a lightly used First Avenue might be better in the long run. The creasing on this Dowler looks worrisome, and I love having GY welts so I can wear my boots forever, so I tend to shop for lightly used AE or Carmina, or spend another hundred on new Carlos Santos. But with 20% off, this is a very reasonable budget alternative if you have to have new. I did order the Beckett Simonon Balmoral (black, to be used as a formal option) and Wingtip (tan, casual use) boots and should get them next month - a relatively inexpensive experiment, going against my own advice. I spent $366 for TWO pairs of boots, and as long as I keep the wear to once a week for each, or maybe a little less, and care for them well, they could last me 20 years, easily. Hope i can control the creasing better than this pair! Thanks again!

I recently ordered a pair of Dowler Boots and received them in June. They had a rubber sole - not sure if maybe the pull up leather ones have a rubber sole and the calfskin ones have leather? I'm pretty happy with them but they were uncomfortable on the top of my foot initially. I've broken them in and I think they're better now.

I have two pair of Beckett Simonon boots, one being the Dowler cap-toe with leather soles. The leather sole version is a casual/dress boot. There is a tougher Dowler Pull-Up Leather cap-toe boot with a rubber sole and the leather is infused with oil and natural waxes. The leather sole version in Oak color looks and feels great. Very easy to break in. I use a leather conditioner every few months and use creme polish as needed. These look best with medium to dark blue jeans, a navy button up shirt, and medium brown sports coat.

Wide toe box? Alden is pretty good, they have like a combination last so they're tighter in the heel an wider in the toes. Otherwise Parkhurst's boots look dressy but have a wider toe box than other dressy boots, really subtle though. Comdy. I have a discount code with them too. Great review. Not as narrow in the toe box or as stacked in the heel as Thursday's and not as bulbous in the toe as Iron Ranger or Blacksmith. The silhouette is the perfect middle ground for max versatility imo. I would love to see this in a GYW version and/or with a Vibram mini lug option. I agree that the recommended maintenance frequency would be a bit of a chore. Cream twice a month, wax once a month, condition every third month, a quick brush before or after daily wear, creases be damned. 12 weeks though.... Hard to complain at that price and they would arrive just in time for boot season. Midwest and East Coast, best to have em for next spring. Thanks for the reviews. I wouldn't consider some brands because they have awful pics on most websites. Your reviews are very helpful.

Thanks for your comment! Glad you have similar feelings I do. It's like right between the Thursday hybrid type shoe and like a Red Wing, it's like a hybrid hybrid haha. It depends how you want the boots to look I guess but again I never conditioned these in the. 3 months I. had them before filming this and they look fine. I'd put on. a Saphir polish every month or two and/or Renovateur every few months. Really glad you find the reviews helpful, dude!

Neither is all that great but at least Thursdays have a real Goodyear welt. Blake-stitching is for fey Italian loafers and dress shoes. Neither BS or Thursday is anywhere close to the iconic quality of Red Wing/ Allen Edmonds/ etc. The cheapo boot companies are a dime a dozen. I have a pair of Thursday Captains that I bought on sale for $130. They are okay I guess but the leather quality is so-so at best and the footbed has already started to sag (very common on lower-end boots with regular heels - I guess the shank isn’t very sturdy). If you really want a seriously well made pair of boots get some John Lofgrens or something like that … expensive but you do get what you pay for.

Hard to say Nicholas, the fits are different. I'm big into Thursday myself but sometimes I like the leather sole and rounder toe of Beckett Simonon. Vanguards are a bit better in rough weather though.

Are they a true Blake stitch or a Blake Rapid? The Blake would require a cobbler with a Blake stitching machine, but the Rapid should be resoleable on a standard stitcher like a Goodyear welt.

I’ve found their website really difficult to navigate, especially on mobile. You can’t even find these boots in their “mens” section, I could only find them by Googling. On top of that, the Google image only showed their “retail price” of $350, you would only see their actual price of $219 if you clicked the link to go to the website.

Nick, just a comment on Blake construction. Some bootmakers that favor this method, like Helm, use a variant called Blake-Rapid. The upper, insole, and midsole are sewn together using traditional Blake stitching, with the stitches internal to the boot. However, the midsole and outer sole are stitched on the outside, around the perimeter of the boot, similar to the welt stitch on a GYW. This makes the boots more water resistant since there is no direct channel from the sole to the inside of the boot. As well, in principle, it would be easier to resole the outer sole since the stitching is all on the outside. Based on just a visual inspection of the BS boots in videos and photos, I am surmising that BS uses Blake-Rapid. Since I was thinking of ordering a pair of Dowlers in pullup leather, I asked customer support several times about this, but all they could say was that their boots are resoleable and very water resistance, and referred me to a link on Blake construction. I am thinking that perhaps the "Rapid" aspect of the construction is called something else in Spanish or when used outside the US. Given the positive buzz about BS and the low price point, I decided to take the risk and ordered a pair.

@@Stridewise Past couple of months, I've exchanged several messages with BS about this topic and have gotten the same response....simply that it is Blake construction. When I asked if the external stitching on the soles of their boots is therefore strictly cosmetic, they said no...so I'm totally befuddled. I'm just going to get the boots and enjoy them for what they offer....maybe even test drive them in the rain and see what happens...haha

This may be a matter of semantics, but I differentiate between creases due to wearing from crinkles associated with loose grain. Nick made no mentioned of loose grain when the boots were unboxed. In fact, no review of BS by anyone that I have seen/read has ever complained about the quality of BS leather when new. Nick's feedback on the creasing when worn aggressively was, for me at least, invaluable. I'm not convinced yet that the stitching along the soles' perimeter is fake.

As for the construction - different frequency of stitches on the sole and welt is a reliable way to distinguish between Blake and Blake Rapid. These shoes have rare stitches on the sole (this is a blake stitch) and frequent stitches on the welt (this is fake rapid stitch). This is a common trick. Most often, this seam is not real at many manufacturers. Got a pair in Walnut pull-up leather. Love them, but the waiting game does test your patience. FWIW, the pair I've got have the rubber soles instead of leather, can't wear leather to the workplace. Also, I reached out to their Customer Support about care, they recommended Chamberlains Leather Conditioner Liniment #1 and said, " since pull up leather is already waxed, use just a little bit of this milk, it will help hydrate the leather and cover scuffs and marks, however, if you add too much, the leather will end up all sticky."

nikhilsrl they’re blake rapid stitched; they’re a little different in that yes, it is directly stitched but then they get another layer of leather and stitch it with the first layer, kind of gives it that chunkier look.

Hi Nick, I think the Dowler Cap-Toe Boot is very nice looking and they look good with all the wear you put on them in a fairly short period of time. I would take exception to Becket Simonon’s advice to use a wax based polish quite frequently on the boot. I’d be afraid of increased creasing and cracking of the leather at various stress points. I’d prefer a Goodyear welt, and you do a great job of pointing out the advantages of Goodyear versus the Blake stitching used with the Dowler Boot. I think your review is very fair and objective and given the price point of the Dowler, I wouldn’t have a problem purchasing a pair of the Dowler’s as I feel you inform us of the limitations of the Blake Stitching. Always refreshing to see one of your candid, objective reviews. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these boots.

own their boot, they are nice but at that price point you are better off getting Thursday boots or Allen Edmonds factory seconds.. I just got myself a pair of Dalton Allen Edmonds and let me tell you is by far a better bang for the buck than the Beckett Simonon

(Manufacturing and Distribution). the best was the shipping I did not have to wait 4 months to get my shoes they created the shipping manifest the same night!!... from now every time I need some shoes I will just wait patiently for any Allen Edmonds deals... as a matter of fact they are offering a $150 discount right now... too bad I already have my good share of shoes because the Sullivan model looks dope!! perhaps two years from now..

Stridewise I used them with button shirts, T shirts, hoodies and will wear them with everything. My personal opinion is that Brogue shoes are appropriate in most contexts.
