In-depth review of the Bezzera BZ13 semi-automatic espresso machine. A best value in heat-exchange boiler espresso machines with PID brew temp control. With an electronically heated group, the BZ13 is fully warmed up and ready to brew in just 8 minutes compared to 25 minutes for competing machines. Get a look inside the BZ13, results of Scace brew temp and steaming performance tests. Plus we'll compare specifications with competing machines and have a look at the Bezzera BB005 - a machine grade grinder which pairs well with the BZ13 and is an impressive value with a lower price than appliance grade grinders at a similar price.

This is a solid machine for sure. The only complaint I have really is the steam wand - it doesn't angle out very far, and it's relatively short. Fix that and it's a no-brainer in its price range.

Everything Bezzera makes is in-house and not in China. The machine looks fantastic. Prices reasonable. Build quality looks fantastic. Easy enough to operate as my wife doesn't like complicated things. What's not to like? I think I found my espresso machine. Thanks Mark.

Hey Rx, You are welcome. You are correct on Bezzera making the majority of components in-house. If you have not seen it, here's a video from when I visited their production facility a few years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYqUZYF6bMR4rtU Marc

Coming back a month after I've purchased this machine and Im definitely a Bezzera convert! The warm up time is perfect for early mornings and paired with a Eureka Silenzio, is perfect for those 5am espressos! I've watched whole latte love for years and thanks to this video, i finally discovered the perfect HX machine for me, thanks Mark. On a separate note, the rosewood upgrade, was not as shiny a finish as in the video, but thankfully I appreciate the natural wood finish.

I got this machine 3 years ago after a lot of research; such an ideal machine and you could not want more for a HX. Fastest ever heat time, amazing temp control, super strong steam, only 10inch wide, all stainless body. Great quality, Bezzera make their own boilers in house among other components, and Bezzera made the worlds first espresso machine, so a great heritage ! I paired mine with a Baratza Vario.

Here I thought I'd settled on the Lelit Elizabeth as the replacement/upgrade to my old, faithful, and now broken Saeco Aroma. But now this video has me convinced: the Bezzera BZ13 *will* be my next Espresso machine. I just wish Christmas wasn't so far away, as the Wife has said that's the only way I could possibly get one... as a Christmas gift. Thanks for the perfectly done video, Marc. Hey fp, you are welcome for the video! The BZ13 is an excellent machine. Not to muddy the waters, but since you have some time before Christmas to work on the wife for a few more $$ you might want to take a look at the Bezzera Magica. It takes you to an E61 group. Here's a link to the machine. Scroll down the page a bit and there a similar review video of the Magica: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bezzera-magica-pid-espresso-machine Either way you go it's a huge upgrade from the Saeco! I am looking for my future machine and the BZ 13 fits just what I am looking for. It has some pretty tall feet on and I was wondering if they come off or are there short feet to put on the BZ13? It will go under a 17” shelf and though it will fit it will be tight with cups on the warmer.

Hi r, The BZ13 is a fine machine! For reference, with stock feet the front cup warming surface height off counter is 13.5". The other cup warming surface is 14.75". The feet mount with an integrated threaded stud. Easy to remove feet by unscrewing but we do not have a shorter option for Bezzera machines. It's possible to custom make your own. There is a service panel cover on the bottom of the machine that extends down .75". The feet are 1.75" so you could gain about 1". Marc

Hi Marc, would you pick this over the profitec pro 400?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi Sandor, Thanks for the question. So the BZ13 has full range control of temps using PID. The Pro 400 has 3 temp presets. Pro 400 has the E61 brew group which is available with flow control. The BZ13 uses Bezzera's BZ group which is electrically heated for stable temps and faster heat up times from turn on. Personally I'd go for the 400 with flow control - opens up a lot of brewing possibilities. Hi Ken, Thanks for the request I'll see if I can get a startup video for the BZ13 on the schedule - might be awhile. Honestly it's fairly straightforward. Rinse and fill the reservoir, place in machine and turn on. Boiler will fill. Once you hear the pump stop after filling the boiler press a brew switch and let run until water is dispensed from the group. Let the machine heat up and you are good to go. Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi cs, Thanks for the comment! Espresso machines do get warm on top - helps to warm cups. And, the group where the portafilter locks in gets hot. That's by design. It helps with thermal stability for better espresso. Classic machine grade products like the Bezzeras are made of metal and have internal boilers which hold a fair volume of water. Breville products are appliance grade. They use a lot of plastic in construction. Instead of boilers they use thermoblock heating systems which are small tubes which heat small amounts of water as needed. Marc

Would changing the temperature on the PID lead to large drops in pressure for the steam? Also, would changing the OPV mess up the PID accuracy (depending on where they're measuring, and providing the information to smooth out the heating curve I suppose)?
@stiggles98
@stiggles98 4 жыл бұрын
No, I don't think it would lose pressure. My machine has a PID, but the temp it adjusts is for the brew circuit, or brew water only. The steam auto-sets when I flip the switch, and cannot be adjusted. Granted I have a single boiler, not a heat exchanger, but I imagine they'd program it similarly. Second question, I can't answer, as I'm pretry sure my PID doesn't monitor brew pressure; mine has a v-pump and you can watch the pressure dial move around. 😂😂
@dhwdhhskcbfusbsmsss
@dhwdhhskcbfusbsmsss 4 жыл бұрын
@@stiggles98 thanks for the reply! the second question was because I'm wondering whether the PID for an HX machine is set to work at a particular flow rate, but it wouldn't matter because I'd adjust my grind if I dropped the pressure, so flow rate would be similar.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi v, Thanks for the questions. Lowering the PID temp will lower the steam pressure but I would not consider it a large drop. @Joey Hahn: Thanks for your input but BZ13 is heat exchange boiler and the PID controls boiler temp and therefore steam pressure. Changing OPV has no effect on PID accuracy. The OPV only operates when brewing is in progress and has nothing to do with temps - it simply releases excess brew pressure (not steam) while an extraction is in progress.

But it’s not true, even if you have pid you need to do cooling flush when you have hx machine, because the boiler is under high pressure and heat, and the brew pipe going through the boiler will get same temp. So yes cooling flush is a must and pid only gives you the satisfaction of diffenrent brewing temp by altering boiler temp.

Hello, a few more questions about the BZ13. Is the water spout stationary or does move like the steam wand? Also does the PM version come with PID? Approximately, how many shots can you pull in succession with steaming milk before the boiler has to refill?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hello KP, Thanks for the questions and I appreciate your patience - I've been on vacation and offline. The water spout does move around some. Not as much as the steam wand but it's not locked in place. PM version does have PID: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bezzera-bz13-pm As an HX boiler machine water level in boiler does not change when pulling a shot. When pulling a shot the pump is pushing an equal amount of water into the HX section of the boiler. Hard to say how much steaming one can do before the boiler fills. Generating steam doesn't use much water so it could be many steaming sessions before boiler senses low water and refills. Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi s, Thanks for the comment. I will be doing a review of the BB005 in the coming weeks. So the build quality is machine grade in the BB005 while the Sette 270 is an appliance grade product - lot's of plastic so not as robust. Sette is much faster and louder. Sette has precision timing while the BB005 has non-precision timing. Basically a dial with a couple of marks on it so it's a guess as to timing. Grind size adjustment on the Sette uses a micro and micro ring with reference numbers and letters. The BB005 has extremely precise grind size adjustment but no reference marks. Both use a conical burr. it's 40mm in the Sette and 48mm in the BB005. BB005 has much longer expected working life than the Sette due to build quality. The Sette has a break in period and includes shims to be inserted (easy to do) after about 4kg of grinder to restore fine grind settings. Also has a felt friction ring between the macro and micro burr adjustment rings. In time that will need to be replaced. It's a $1 part and also easy to replace. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi Joe, Thanks for the question. Many manufacturers set static pressure higher for vibration pump machines in order to provide a proper brew water flow rate. It's important to remember that you'd only hit 11bar if your grind causes you to. And, static pressure measurements are not the same as pressure when actually brewing a a shot. Marc

Hey Mark, apologies but I don’t think your comment on pressure is correct! i owned this machine for 3 years. the pressure gauge always points to 11bar. yesterday i had a very watery shot 50g output yield (18g coffee) in less than 20 seconds but the press was still 11bar. and so I had to make the grind finer to achieve a better balance , pressure was still 11 bar. Another small correction: you don’t store or dispense same “volume” only the same shot time. volume varies by grind setting, machine doesn’t measure shot volume, only shot time can you ask Bezzera on this point, why they set it to 11-12bar and not 9 bars? do you all see same issue in other machines ?

I am questioning Bezzera’s claim that it is “common” on smaller machines as I haven’t seen this mentioned on any other review for smaller machines. Yesterday I lowered the OPV pressure to 10 bar (with a blind basket) and I still see 10bars of pressure when pulling a (fast) shot. I am now planning to lower again to 9 bars as I don’t see this claimed ~3 bars pressure drop happening (between blind and shot) and it is confusing when I hear what bezzera is doing. I read a March 29, 2018 article saying Copper can leech overtime into the water and some people have health concerns about this. The article also said most if not all new copper boilers have some kind of lining like nickel on the inside of the boiler to prevent this. Copper is more susceptible to lime scale than stainless. Copper has excellent temperature stability and consistency. Thick walled insulated stainless boilers have good temperature stability but having brass fittings on stainless is questionable. Not sure how those 2 metals react with each other. Also on a heat exchange unit, the brew water doesnt come from the boiler, it passes through the boiler using Copper tubing so we are still talking about Copper. I’ve struggled with all these concerns myself. For me, right now after all my extensive research, the Bezzera BZ13 DE has everything I’m looking for in a semi auto! Price, heat exchanger, PID, pressure guage, large water tank, heated brew head, separate water spout, good looks, made in Italy! Hi Michael, Thanks for the question. If you will be doing mostly straight espresso I think it's worth your time having a look at the ECM Classica. I'll add a link which compares the specs and current pricing side by side for the BZ13, Pro 300 and ECM Classika. The Classika is a single boiler but has an E61 group, PID, shot timer and better aesthetic build quality IMO. If you want to go next level with straight espresso it is available with flow control of the E61 group. It's a machine which gets a lot of love from the high-end espresso only community. IMO the Pro 300 and BZ13 are comparable in potential espresso quality and the Classika beats them both. If the Classika is out of the mix I'd go Pro 300 for the independent service boiler. Hi Jack, You are welcome! The Pro 500 PID is one of my all time favorite HX boiler machines. With the E61 group it does take longer to ready to brew from cold start. If that's holding you back a simple and potentially wifi enabled power outlet can have the machine warmed up for you in advance. And with wifi you could turn the machine on/off remotely if desired. I'd also consider the ability to add flow control to the E61 group of the PP500. It opens up amazing possibilities to take espresso extractions to the next level. If not familiar, check out this article with details on what you can do with flow control: www.wholelattelove.com/blogs/articles/intro-to-calculating-flow-rate-on-e61-group-machines Both machines are built well. I do give a slight edge to Profitec in that department. They're big on K.I.S.S. design and continuing component improvements. Hope that helps! Marc

Back flush: recommend back flushing with Cafiza every 30-50 brew cycles Descaling: Depends on your water hardness and usage level. If water is very soft then ~2x annually. Hard every 3 months, very hard every 1-2 months. Pro tip: remove a few cups of water 1-2x week using hot water wand. Not needed if you use hot water for rinsing cups or making Americanos on a regular basis. Idea is to turn over water in steam producing section of boiler to stop minerals from accumulating if you are only steaming. Hi Graham, You are welcome. PID on the BZ13 is used for the boiler only. Group is controlled by thermostat. In my testing of BZ group machines over the years the consistency is on par with E61 groups. Major benefit is faster warmup times with the electrically heated BZ group as compared to E61. If slightly faster warmup time is something you’d appreciate the BZ13 is a bit faster with it’s electrically heat group. That adds a bit of complexity to the machine. I purchased this machine (from Whole Latte Love) this week, as upgrade from a much cheaper espresso machine. So far I like the machine, but I have a lot of trouble pulling good shots on it, If I grind the espresso fine enough to get a nice long pull (25 or so sec) then the pressure is up at 11bar (from the video I know it shouldn't be) I feel like I need to drop the pressure down to 9 bar by opening the machine, but If I open it I void the warrantee. this is a bit frustrating. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi AD, Excuse my delayed response as I've been off-line for a few days. You will not void the warranty opening up the machine to adjust the OPV to change brew pressure. Honestly I would not worry too much about hitting 11 bar on the gauge. That's the pressure Bezzara sets the machine to ensure a proper flow rate. Also, pressure within the group will be lower during an extraction by ~1bar than what is indicated on the gauge.

@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for the reply... There is a warranty sticker over the casing which is why I was worried, as I've spent more time with the machine I'm better at pulling a shot and it's likely not needed anyway.

I have the BZ10 which is a very similar predecessor machine to the BZ13. Try grinding a bit finer if it finishes at 25 seconds; typically, you should shoot for at least around 30 seconds. Another thing to keep in mind is that the BZ groupheads allow for less room for grounds than the standard E61 grouphead so I'd make sure to put less coffee than what the portafilter basket allows for. I use 18 grams in my triple shot basket.

Thanks for the great video and review of this equipment. It seems like the Bezzera machines don't get mentioned or reviewed much. I bought a Bezzera BZ13 from our local Pasquini showroom/factory last year, when our Pasquini Livia 90 gave up the ghost. (I live in L.A. After we bought the Livia 90, many years ago, we used to go to the Pasquini showroom and have a lot of great conversations with Mr. Pasquini. About coffee, philosophy, and his friendship with Luciano Pavarotti.) I've been very happy with the BZ13--especially when I paired it with a Niche Zero grinder. I do appreciate all your great videos, which I've been watching for several months now.

Hi Jackie, You are welcome. Thank you for the kind comment and sharing your opinion of the Bezzera BZ13! I've yet to have a brush with LP but did get to spend some time at the Bezzera factory in Milan a couple of years ago and hang out with Luca Bezzera great grandson of the companies founder. Bezzera is unique among machine manufacturers producing >80% of their machine components in-house. If interested here's a factory tour I shot on my visit. Towards the end of the video I go to a castle in Milan which has the inspiration for Bezzera's snake logo on the walls. Marc

Hi Jackie: would you let me know what pressure readings are you getting when back flushing (ie with a blind basket) vs when pulling a shot?

will you be doing a full review of that grinder? and would you recommend it for use with a gaggia classic pro or Bezzera Hobby. edit: im currently looking at a smart grinder pro and either of the two machines and do not know if its better to spend more on the grinder or machine as i would benefit from the steam potential of the hobby.

Hi Jaws, Sorry for the delayed response! I will be doing a full review of the Bezzera's BB005. It might be a few weeks. The grinder has been more popular than anticipated and they sold out a few days ago. We have more on the way from Italy but they come by ship and then there's clearing customs which adds to delivery times. I can say with full confidence the BB005 is a much better grinder than the SGP! It's machine grade while the SGP is an appliance that is slow, tends to deliver a clumpy grind at espresso sizes and lacks the precise grind size control of the BB005. Marc

Is it normal that my Pro 600 steams 6 oz of milk in 8 to 10 seconds? Thats faster than the Linea Mini. Mine gets up to 2.1 bars of pressure at 132 degrees Celsius. Great Video as always.

Hi Marc, Marc here from Whole Latte Love! Thanks for the comment. That's totally normal as the Profitec Pro 600 like the Pro 700 and ECM Synchronika have best in class steaming power maxing out at ~2 bar. Most other competing machines max out around 1.4. It was an upgrade made a couple of years ago at our request by Profitec/ECM.

Marc Mädler it’s a whole latte power! Could always set the temp of your steam boiler lower to pull it back a bit.

Whole Latte Love I have tried that but the steam was very wet even when I purged for more than 5 seconds. Should I backflush Daily if I do about 15 to 20 coffees/shots a day?

Thanks for this great video! I'm about to open a small coffee shop with a volume of approximately 60-90 shots a day. I'm looking for an espresso machine with programmable doses such as the BZ13 DE. Would you recommend this espresso machine or would you consider another one such as the Bezzera Duo Top DE or anything else? Thanks for your help!!

Really? A plastic tamper? My $500 Breville Bambino plus came with a metal tamper.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi 9, Thanks for the comment. As mentioned those plastic tampers come with just about every Italian made espresso machine. Breville does try to add some value and have more of a complete accessory package for their products. Marc

Sorry to stick a finger in your cake, but that's a pure trickery - Breville uses metal shell over plastic base to makes their products appealing and looking like a higher grade stuff, yet include tamper (which seems to be plastic with metal sheet bottom), coffee leveler, brushes - voila, trap has closed! I admit, they have worked on ergonomics and looks, but that doesn't change fact they produce appliances, not heavy duty gear which works for decades. And tamper you buy once for a lifetime. P.S. Look at tamper included with Rocket machines, that's the one you want to see included instead of plastic thingie...
