shut up and take my money. this is the best espresso machine review I've ever seen. I just moved to a smaller house and my single group commercial HX espresso machine doesn't fit so I sadly had to sell it. I'm brewing with an old gaggia espresso color and it's definitely lacking in the flavor development department. I wanted to get back to that solid HX performance, but am curious about dual boilers. after watching a few scace tests with PID'd HX machines, I really don't see the need to over complicate things with a 2x boiler when a PID on a high quality HX will lock you in within 1 degree. I feel like my pallet is well developed, but I really don't think I could taste the difference between 1º and 0.5º stability of a dedicated PID brew boiler. I'll save the $1k price difference and spend that on the best beans I can find.

I've tried adjusting the brew pressure like this and failed spectacularly. In my case the brew pressure were originally set (by the previous owner) to 15 bars. I brought it down to 12 bars, then I tried backflushing again and got 14 bars. Turns out you cannot accurately set the brew pressure while the machine builds pressure. You have to do a slight adjustment, then try to backflush and adjust some more if you didn't get it right. Then, when you backflush you'll always get whatever you've set. In my case this was 12 bars and it's still at 12 bars whenever I backflush

The reservoir is 3 liters, not 4 as stated. I measured it and was annoyed by it, because that was one of my selling points for this machine. Maybe it all became mislead by the "total" capacity of water in the machine, which includes the boiler. But even then, I don't see the boiler holding 1 liter, cause when I descale and drain it, I get way less water than even half liter (from a full boiler). Also, changing the OPV from 12 bar to 9 or even just changing it to 11 bar really, generates a very terrible noise (kinda whistle, metal rattle) when backflushing or when extracting espresso. I called the technicians on WLL and didnt receive any solutions to fix this problem, saying that I basically have to deal with it. Then I did my own research with various forums and groups online, and found out that it could probably be the OPV spring getting loose with lower pressure settings and the only way to fix it is to replace that spring with a 9bar spring (like what Gaggia CP offers). You should say all of that in this video, for transparency, otherwise people (like me) will think it's completely doable to change the pressure from 12 to 9 bar with no problems, and purchase the machine, to find out that it's not true.

Would you buy it again? I'm debating this or the Profitec Pro 500
@valemodsVD2 жыл бұрын
@@Mike_Genisys So far, nothing can beat the price of the Magica for what you get all in all. I would still choose this over the Pro500 PID, because I don’t like the feature of the “return water” of the pro500 being drained to the drip tray instead of going back to the reservoir (as in the Magica). That would be a huge waste of water, especially if you set the OPV to 9bar. Also, I don’t like turning knobs over joystick levers for the steam and hot water. And having the power switch and led that low is not really a good idea, especially because that area is gonna get lots of water from the steam wand etc. Also keep in mind that the Bezzera has a copper boiler (nickel plated inside) whereas the Profitec has an insulated stainless steel boiler. Both types of boilers have pros and cons so it all depends on what suits you the best. To answer your question, yes I would buy Bezzera again…and yes, you have to deal with the probable noise of the spring in the OPV when set to 9 bar or so, but it’s not a deal breaker issue for me.

Or is it worth adding a little to the price and get double boiler, ie profitec pro 700. Do double boilers last longer? I'd love to get one for at least 15 years.
@Wholelattelovepage2 жыл бұрын
Hi A, Thanks for your kind comment and question. Machine longevity depends on how well you take care of it. Key in that department is using good water that does not cause scale to form in the machine. Scale is the number one cause of machine issues. You want some minerals in the water for good flavor and to prevent corrosion of metals. But mineral type matters. The mineral calcium causes scale at the levels needed for good flavor extraction. The mineral Magnesium does not. BWT Water and More makes filters that exchange calcium ions for magnesium ions leaving you with water perfect for extracting flavor that will not cause scale in the machine. Any of the machines you mention can go 15 years with proper maintenance. If you will have a machine 15 years it's hard to argue against a dual boiler like the Pro 700. Amortize the extra cost over term of ownership and it's likely a couple bucks more a month. I guarantee you will appreciate a plumbable machine, with dual boilers and rotary pump over HX boiler machines with vibration pumps. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi TT, Here's a link to a side by side spec comparison of the machines: www.wholelattelove.com/pages/compare?products=NjgyNjU0Nzg3MTc5OCw2ODk5NDY0MDc3MzY2 As you likely know, the Magica is a regular PID machine with temps adjustable in 1 degree increments. The Pro 400 is PID controlled but runs in three temperature ranges. For the majority of users the temp ranges are sufficient. Use lower temp setting for dark roasts, medium setting for light roasts and click over to high temp for extra steaming power. If you are extra particular then you may prefer the more precise temps of the Magica. Something else to consider if you purchase at Whole Latte Love the warranty is 3 years on the Profitec and 2 years on the Bezzera. Hope that helps! Marc

@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hey a, Any chance your water is really soft (low in minerals)? That can cause boiler to overfill a little. Then you start steaming and due to overfill you get more water out initially with the steam which drops level enough to cause autofill to kick on. If your water is normal hardness perhaps a workflow issue like your steaming a lot during an extraction soon after taking a bit of hot water out of machine. You could hack an override to autofill but not suggested due to danger of boiler going dry. I hope that helps. Hi BG, Sounds like a water sensor issue. I've linked to the section of the video which shows how water is sensed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3O4m3SQlq-MldE Make sure the screw heads on the sides of the reservoir have good contact with the metal flaps. If you remove reinsert the reservoir does that fix problem? The machine uses conductivity of water for sensing. Water must have some mineral content for sensors to work. So if you're using distilled or RO (not a good idea for many reasons) that could cause the problem. If contact with the screw heads on side of reservoir looks good you can trace the wires back from the pickup and make sure everything is securely connected. Hi Tony, Thanks for the questions. One would think additional pressure would cause channeling. But in reality it's not that simple. There's some thought higher pressure in the portafilter causes finer coffee particles to migrate through the coffee puck resulting in more of a "barrier" to channels. Other variables at play like distribution of grind and quality of leveling and tamping which play a role. I am choosing between this or ECM Technika V... which one is better? :)
@Wholelattelovepage3 жыл бұрын
Hi DD, The current ECM Techika V Profi PID is a higher-end machine with a higher price tag than the Magica. Here's a link to a side by side spec comparison of the Technika and Magica: www.wholelattelove.com//pages/compare?products=MjIyMzc0MzUzMzExMCw2NTkyODQxNTE1MDYy Key features that put the Technika at the next level: Rotary pump, plumbable and exquisite case finishing and details. How long does it take to warm up? Can this be plumbed?
@Wholelattelovepage3 жыл бұрын
Hi x, Typical warmup time for E61 group machines like the Magica is ~20 minutes. Machine cannot be plumbed. Plumbing a machine genrally rquires it have a rotary pump and the Magica uses a vibration pump. Marc

Hi Mark, I follow your videos and thank you very much for everything you’re doing. I must say I’ve learnt a lot watching your videos. Does Whole Latte Love ship machines to Saudi Arabia if I would to order one? Is there a warranty that covers it? And finally is it possible to have a consultation on what best machines might fit my needs. Thank you very much again and best wishes from the other side of the world !

@@Wholelattelovepage Hi Marc and thank you very much for your prompt response. Basically, I am more of an espresso lover. And here I mean the deep rich espresso with a beautiful crema! Occasionally, I feel like having a flat white or a cappuccino (maybe once a week). I’ve looked at so many videos and reviews and the more I read the more confused I get! So I essentially decided on the ECM Classika. But after watching your video on the vibration vs rotary pump and the espresso each made, I decided against the classika because it’s a vibration pump. Besides, I found a second hand Classika (type ii) which doesn’t have a PID. I’m not sure how pivotal that is but I’d guess it’d be very helpful for someone like me who hasn’t used a machine before and lacks experience on the technical functions such as pressure…etc. I know some people are good at managing temperature by managing the pressure, but I can’t myself since I don’t know how. Finally, money shouldn’t be an issue for purchasing machine that produces the perfect espresso. However, I don’t want to spend a lot on a machine that is “too advanced” then I don’t make the most of its functions. That’d be just a waste! So to sum up, I’m looking for a machine that produces a perfect shot of espresso, easy to use, and ready to make some drinks with milk occasionally. I also would like to know your thoughts on the Classika ii that doesn’t have a PID. thank you very much in advance for taking the time to respond to this and sorry for the very long message!

How long do you think this machine would last?
@Wholelattelovepage3 жыл бұрын
Hi EB, With proper maintenance it should go for a very long time. Most problems are caused by neglect and/or poor water quality which causes scale to build up in the machine. Great thing is these machines are very user serviceable and we are here to support you if needed with many how to videos, written material and coffee pros you can talk to by phone. Marc

Search our YT channel for those. Similar machines are the Profitec Pro 500 and the Rocket Cronometro V available in Giotto or Mozzafiato body styles. This guy pronounces Bezzera "Bedzzera" because for some reason he adds a d for some reason even though there is not one.... Nice review though! Although the PID is a fairly cheap component to add to a machine these days, a lot of people add their own to Gaggia classic and Ranchillio Silva machine, so I would not make it a big deal regarding the price.
@Wholelattelovepage2 жыл бұрын
Hi CH, Thanks for the kind comment. Very aware people will hack their machine and install PID - often with questionable results. But sure it can be done. On the pronunciation of Bezzera... That comes straight from the mouth of the guy who has the last name: Luca Bezzera. I had him pronounce his name on tape when I visited his production facility in Italy back in 2018. I don't claim to pronounce it perfectly but give it my best shot. It's a Portuguese name pronounced in Italian. You can here Luca pronounce it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYqUZYF6bMR4rtU Marc

@Sal_car883 жыл бұрын
Your comment must be a joke, right? The ECM synchronika is a $3200+ machine. This one is less than $1900. These do not compete with each other. Obviously you'll get more on a machine that costs $1400 more.
@JasonAlexzander1q473 жыл бұрын
@@Sal_car88 no joke. Just stating the fact that people should save their money and buy something like the Synchronika. Something, that with normal maintenance, will last them 25yrs or better. Espresso machines should be a purchase like an appliance. Such as like a refrigerator or stove. You want something that will have quality and last. And let's face it. If your going to do a home espresso bar. You might as well throw down on a puqpress too! 😉😉

nice machine if only have ROTARY PUMP, WHY THEY DO NOT ADD ROTARY PUMP, SHAME VIBRA IS JUST 3 GRADE PUMP FOR THIS BEAUTIFULL MACHINE, SHAME!
@Wholelattelovepage2 жыл бұрын
Hi dd, Thanks for the comment. Vibe pumps a very common at this level of machine. Rotary pump would significantly increase cost and size of machine. Some users like vibe pumps for their slower initial pressure rise which acts as a sort of pre-infusion. Also, slower pressure rise may allow one to use a slightly finer grind size resulting in a deeper extraction. Many other variables play into that but it's often the case. Marc
