I have no RW flying experience and am the first to admit I'm a fairly crappy pilot in X-Plane at this point. BUT I just got this and am blown away by how it has instantly made me a somewhat less crappy pilot, in no small part due to how much easier it is to finely trim my aircraft (c172) with the trim wheel. Flying straight and level has never so easy, so much so that it kind of feels like cheating, but not being a real pilot I don't really know. Loving this thing so far!

A gem of a review thank Russ. I supported the Honeycomb kickstarter and certainty have no regrets. I saw there is third party software available to turn the button pulse control of the trim wheel into an axis. This allows a change in responsiveness to one's liking, but obviously its not going to affect the physical resistance issue. The above did make me wonder whether that software (need to find it's name) could be used to turn reversers into axes. That would then offer gradution. Not only did I greatly enjoy the video, I found the comments section useful as well. My next point to research is whether I could use my old joystick as a tiller for taxiing while having the yoke and throttle assigned? - the issue being I don't have rudder pedals, and a button on the joystic could be used for braking. I have this unit... 5 things I can give constructive criticism about: 1) The rotating knobs for the left side selector could have been better quality, with at least a white line so you could see that was currently selected. That, or an LED above each function to show which was currently selected. 2) The push buttons having inter changeable covers so you could assign the buttons the way you want them. 3) The toggle switches having lights on them so you know when they are active. 4) For the commercial levers, make the white knobs bigger and have the TO/GA switch on the side as it is in commercial aircraft. 5) Detents for the flap and IAS selector levers would have been nice.

Good points but I fly a lot in VR so the LEDs wouldn't help me that much since I have to work mostly by feel.. Also, as a high hour B737 pilot, I can say that the TOGA button is close to where it is on all real 737s made after the B737-200 Advanced (1980 vintage). The side button is the auto throttle disconnect button so they have it right for B737s on the Alpha. It was hard for guys who switched from the early model 737s to the newer models because when doing a go around they would instinctively hit the "old" TOGA (side)button and disconnect the auto throttles and NOT start the auto go around as expected. After a few seconds of confusion things usually went south fast after that and I even saw a few guys bust check rides because of it.

Thanks again Russ for your videos reviewing products and tutorials. They are extremely valuable. As a pilot, I use my sim to gain skills, and build muscle and cognitive memory that will help me to be a better pilot when I am actually flying. I gave my comment on your review for the Alpha. My comment for the Bravo is that it is not realistic as a training device. It seems as though the product people wanted to cram as many switches as possible on their controls. In the real C172/182, things are quite different as you know. I don't own one but I noticed when you trim, you moved the trim wheel quite a lot to get small changes. In the real airplane, you move the wheel in small increments. I bought a Switcho Trim Panel from Virtual Fly which is more realistic for pilots training for their FAA License. Perhaps you can give me some feedback if you have a little time. Thank you.

Great review. I’m getting ready to set up for FS 2020 after not simming for a few years. Your review is very helpful. I’m wondering how VR goggles work when using an “analog” setup like this. How can you manipulate buttons/switches/handles while wearing the goggles?

This is indeed an issue.In the military when checking out on a new aircraft we used to do a blind cockpit check where we had to be able to find all the knobs and switches while wearing a blindfold. Once you get your hands on the throttle you can kind of find everything from memory and feel but what we really need is hand tracking and pass through video to be able to really fly easily in VR. It’s just that the immersion and realism is just so compelling it’s worth dealing with the limitations that still exist.

Thanks for posting this review! I subscribed to see more of your videos. I just ordered both the throttle quadrant and yoke to use with MSFS2020 and X Plane 11. Haven't been flying much for awhile and had an old CH Fighterstick joystick I used in Il2 Sturmovik a WW2 sim but that stick just doesn't cut it with MSFS. Really appreciated hearing your thoughts on it both as from a Pilot and also in comparison to the Virtual Fly TQ6, and that's a big gap to fill $ wize! I think these will work nicely for me, as long as they'll fit together at my desk!

I've flown numerous Boeing jets in real life, so I'm picky about realism. I have a couple of questions. 1) Since there are no detents or gates, are you looking at the aircraft flap position indicator to judge where to position the handle in order to get the flap setting you want? 2) Is there an autothrottle disconnect button? I noticed that the TOGA switch is where the disconnect buttons should be. It appears that you were able to arm the speedbrakes using the handle. Did you lift the handle as in the actual aircraft or is there simple a detent position that accomplishes that task? Thanks.

First look at this video for the flap issue I made a fix kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWa7mZKqe7ymjM0 As for the A/P disconnect button you can reassign any buttons as you wish. Actually I flew B737-200 Basics that had the TOGA on the side where the later. -200 ADV had the disconnect. At first we were flying both models and had sims of both types. I saw many a guy accidentally disconnect the A/P during a go around thinking he was hitting the toga on the ADV….thing rapidly go downhill from there. Finally I by habit moved the SB handle to a slightly forward position but there is no arm detent. After you see my flap detents it could be done.of course the autos Poulet works in the sim but obviously the Bravo handle has no motor so it stays put.

I transitioned from a Saitke yoke to an Alpha and can't wait to get the opportunity to transition from the Saitek throttles to a Bravo (hopefully early next year). How is the trim response on the Bravo in MSFS?

Not a big fan of the trim on FS2020. Not sure if the inputs are fairly large but slow but I seem to no see it a first and then over trim. Need to look into it. It’s seems to take a lot of wheel rotations to get much trim so it seems more precise than the yoke buttons. Something about the rate of trimming seems off.but I don’t think it is the Bravo.

I think I would get a cheap used rudder on eBay or craigslist for less than $100 and wait for the Honeycomb Charlie. May be a year but the Saitek or CH pedals cane get you started at a reasonable price. Thrust master has a cheap set of pedals in plastic but the are about $120 and are close together and look flimsy. I really am not qualified to pass judgement on them so check online for reviews. Good luck.

The only real drawback for this system. You need a very specialized setup to take best advantage. It's really a pain to use my keyboard when I have it all set up. Still, a beautiful throttle and yoke.

Would respect your thoughts regarding the "potential" utility of the Bravo Encoder dial and associated Quadrant buttons to complement, augment or mitigate the need for the Knobster. Yes in some regards the built in encoder may be a step backward for those using Knobster. First it requires rotating the selector knob to select a mode which seems less intuitive that just touching it on screen as with Knobster. It reminds me of the Saitek multi-panel operation.It still beats using a mouse and keyboard for inputs. Second, the Knobster has a much better Elma encoder that the one used in Bravo. Bravo is a reasonable trade off between quality and price. I am anxious to try the quadrant in VR to see how easily I can stay oriented using tactile feedback only to navigate the buttons. I am thinking the autopilkot buttons and sellector may be pretty easily memorized and used while "under the hood". Finally, some people may elect for a panel monitor that is not a touchscreen displaying Air Manager instruments in which case the Bravo buttons would be a useful improvement over mouse and keyboard inputs.

@@rbarlow Thanks Russ, I've noticed in multiscreen configurations that MSFS 2020 only honors Touch when present on the Touch Screen Display (Acer 28" - which makes sense). However, if MSFS 2020 is instead running in a window on my larger 32" non-touch screen and a subordinate window from MSFS 2020 is moved into the Acer Touch Screen monitor, TOUCH does not operate in that secondary window context. Ideally, my 32" (non-touch) screen should be used for primary "viewing" and the 28" Acer Touch Monitor would be used for tactile operations such as NAV/RADIO/AP. Is there a workaround or setting that I have overlooked? Gratefully.

My actual goal is NOT to be an expert flight simmer, but rather to get my private pilot's certificate and to get my instrument & commercial ratings. Possibly even to get to CFI. So, all dollars spent on flight sim equipment are a two-edged sword. Yes, they help me build proficiency, but they are also money taken away from training in the actual "thing". So, barring an unlimited budget... it's a balancing act. My sense has been that there is no company nor product that better hits that balance between dollars and performance than Honeycomb, that is, in service of actually flying. Your reviews only serve to confirm that, so thank you VERY much Russ!! You have a great speaking style and you deliver the most important information and in a very well organized fashion. As an aside, I hope Honeycomb's success continues to build. Not only do they deserve it, but for self-serving reasons, I can easily see moving up to their step-up products. For example, their longterm goals include a yoke in the sub $500 category... with force feedback!!! It will hopefully also close the gap between the Alpha Yoke and the Yoko. If they pull that off and if they do similarly with step-ups to Bravo & Charlie, they might well capture 90% of the market share. One more aside: I grew up about 3 or 3.5 hours east of you in Athens. It's an extreme long shot that I'd have the time, but I will be visiting my parents there from Nov 17th to the 22nd and if there were any way to meet up with you for an hour or so of socializing it would be my pleasure. It's my father's fault that I have this bug. He only ever got his private pilot's certificate, but I still have very fond memories of the original Ohio University airport at the east end of town and I still remember my father taking me to the airport to go up for an hour or so. I recall that as we would get near the airport, that the airport ambience & the smell of AVGAS, that the hair would stand up on my arm with excitement at the prospect of getting up in the air. Thanks for the review. I just ordered this arriving in the next few days. It looks fantastic. My main worry is the trim wheel as I've heard others say its too loose. I'll be using mine in a motion simulator with vibration & I worry its going to move on its own as I move about & it vibrates. Do you think the standard tension on it is enough to stop it moving? If not i will be looking to create a mod to put a bit more tension on it

@@rbarlow My bravo throttle arrived today & I agree the trim wheel is a bit too loose. I made a quick fix for this which was a large washer made out of a piece of neoprene foam I cut into a circle ~2mm thick. I cut a slit in it & slipped it in behind the wheel. It took me a few tries with thickness for the right resistance but it feels much better now.

I don't understand your detent issue because another reviewer showed the detent on the levers and flaps. Pilot Emilie did a review and there were clearly detents on the levers and flaps and she showed that. Could it be the tensioner not set tighter?

No the detent is just very soft. It is hard not to accidentally go past it without realizing it. If I pull the Airline style throttles to the detent and the actuate the revers levers I usually pull the levers beyond the detent.I suppose if you set the throttle friction to almost zero you might notice it more but then IMHO the throttle wouldn’t feel realistic. It is possible to set an action when below the detent, like reverse thrust, so it would be nice to feel it more. On the Virtual Fly TQ-6 the detent is very noticeable and take a good pull to get past it.that throttle also has revers thrust modulation below the detent not just an on/off switch. Of course it is over 3 times the price and has no extra functions beyond the levers. It. y not be an issue for you that was just my observation. I may 3D print a little plug to limit the throttle movement at the detent when desired.

Yes but the handle is pretty stiff and not easily accidentally lowered or raised. Still it would be better as you say.

No that is just an on off switch. It could be done on XP using part of the throttle axis as the reverse range like I did on the Saitek. Otherwise it would take four additional axes which is not practical on a unit this size and price. I have a set of Saitek yoke already, can the honeycomb throttle still work with MSFS2020 if I will go to buy this set only, no honeycomb yoke?

Sure. The Yoke and Throttle are independent so you can mix the Saitek Yoke with the Honeycomb throttle quadrant. The honeycomb Alpha Yoke is much better than the Saitek yoke though.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at that. I don’t know exactly how that is connected as I don’t see a bolt external from the trim wheel to tighten or loosen to remove in place of washer. Right now it pretty much spins like a wheel on an axle.

I'm a happy owner of the alpha yoke but I'm not sure I'll buy this one. In my opinion there are too many compromises. I understand the goal was having a quadrant for almost all kind of planes but in that way each possible setup has something missing. As a boeing/airbus lover, I would have preferred less ap buttons/annunciators and more options on the axis (such as speedbreak armed position or push/pull, a/t disengage, flaps with positions and a full reverse thrust axis). And I don't like the mounting base, the same used for the alpha: I have a thick table and the clamps are just too short while the suction system has removed the paint from the table and is unusable.

Well it sounds like you may need a high end dedicated airliner quadrant. Of course the Airbus and Boeing are quite different. I think the Bravo does an excellent job filling a wide variety of needs at an affordable cost. Many folks like the variety of airliners and GA aircraft so this is a great choice for them. No, I am not looking fo high end stuff, I am just not fully convinced by this bravo as I was for the alpha, maybe my expectations were too high (and not realistic). In the end I could buy it. I'am also looking at the thrustmaster TCA airbus, because on that one you can remove the detent zones and move the throttle freely. In any case, both items are out of stock so for the moment no decisions :)

ok, the trim wheel is too loose. No problem with me. But it just won't work with MSFS. I assigned the elev.trim according to the only functions available, but the trim wheel does not operate elev.trim in the plane. Only the electric trim on the yoke works.

I agree but it does work just poorly. You cannot assign an axis to it so you have to assign elev nos up and elev nose down to the two rotation directions. It is like an encoder knob. Unfortunately the inputs are too slow requiring a lot of rotation to detect a change. I suggest adding a stand alone trim wheel that uses a potentiometer and feels quite realistic. Something like this: gear-falcon.com/products/stand-alone-elevator-trim-v4 It even has 8 spare digital pins you can attach additional buttons and switches too if you like.

@@rbarlow now this is not good news to me, as I cannot get this gadget in Europe, and moreover, Honeycomb has done a lousy job of not integrating a potentiometer-controlled wheel in an otherwise good product. As they are currently off the air and maybe going to close down, I take it there is no solution out there. I have used good trim wheels in "real" sim cockpits, and they worked just fine. I dont see a reason I couldnt 3d print full size handles assuming you dont want to use all 6 axis simultaniously... could probably also make a spring loaded gate for the flaps. I'll probably do exactly this if I ever get my bravo quadrant :P Turns out its about as hard to get as a 3080 or 6800xt

I'm torn on this. I see they were going for a quadrant of similar size of the Yoke, so that they could use the same mounting base. But to me only 58% of the real size handles is too small for my tastes. I would expect at least 80%.

Actually about 60% scale is not too bad. The General Aviation knobs are much closer. It is made for portability too. To get to full scale airliner size it would be a pretty big unit. It is a compromise and while not high fidelity it is pretty good for the price. Compared to the flimsy Logitech/Saitek Quadrant (which would require two to get six axis) it is a no brainer. If you want a rugged, realistic sized, general aviation quadrant with no frills(just levers no buttons at all) you can have the Virtual Fly TQ-6 for about $859-900. IMHO I agree with my wife that size really doesn’t matter😀

@@rbarlow Well in that case, I'll value your input, since you do have real world experience on that airframe. And if you say it isn't too bad at that size, then I guess I can shelve my reservations. I did have the Saitek Quadrant, so I know the point of reference. And the Yoke is excellent (I had to return mine for a replacement because one of the button wasn't functioning out of the box). So I expect nothing less of good quality from the Quadrant.

Other flight sim utubers have mentioned the throttle " detent" is light but ok ..i have the feeling your correct though ..not much if any detent is there . I didn't use the suction cup...use the clamps as shpwn or if you have a dedicated sim table you could possibly screw or bolt the mounting plate to the surface before installing the yoke or quadrant

Once again, this gives me the horrible feeling that it's a case of visual excellence over physical details (weak detents, poor tension on the trims). There's no doubt that Honeycomb is trying to position itself as the "go to" for simmers but I worry about the long-term viability for what I've seen. Oh, and I've already bought the yoke and await delivery of bravo - so I've put my own money where my complaints and observations are. I just wish there were more people out there who were prepared to look beyond Honeycomb's beautiful design - and a little closer. "All that glitters is not gold" - and it's the best we got for now. Nice to see you noted there is no potentiometer in the reverse thrust (didn't think they would be). Another thing I noticed is that for all we have loads of switches (on both devices) there's no way to insert some labels so we know what the devil they all do!

Tip for the labels: glue a metal (ferro) strip below the buttons. Print labels for a particular aircraft on magnetic paper strips. Attach a metal plate in the box where you keep the handles and store unused button strips there. When you change aircraft, get the right handles out and the strip for that aircraft and stick it on the throttle quadrant.

@@rbarlow i play more p3d than anything running fs passengers and opus weather ultimate traffic etc. Have a complete saitek flight deck and was getting a heap of errors. Plus the drivers didnt work unless you muck around with the power management usb device regedit. So just purchased spad.next. and solved that issue with crashing with overlays and also works perfect with all aircraft on msfs2020. Check it out may be worth your while.

I honestly can't figure out why one would need to get it. I have the T16000 setup (stick, throttle, pedals combo) and it appears going and buying the specific Airbus setup would be minimal and a waste of money (there's one youtuber who is making that very jump) -- a little visual difference, base color, and the dual throttle rather than single, is all I can see. Thus the airbus setup looks kinda silly if you already have a stick setup.

Did you order from Honeycomb directly or somewhere else? I think Honeycomb quadrants that were pre-ordered will ship in December. The AlphaYoke has been available but the sell fast. Two reasons. More people at home gaming more due to Covid-19 and Flight Sim 2020 attracting many new people to the hobby. Honeycomb is a new company so I think they were reluctant to sink lots of money into unsold inventory but as their success grows and all the early adopters get units this may change. I know it is frustrating.

~ 13:30 You are the second reviewer to state that the reverse handles are full on or full off and no in-between. Darn. As an amateur simmer I like to cheat a little and just use reverse for my convenience. I guess I can just assign extra joystick buttons for that purpose and still use those regular reverse levers on landings (?) The hdg / alt / vs / etc buttons along with the corresponding knob seem like a good idea, as I always have trouble mid-flight using my mouse to adjust altitude -- bounces knock my mouse pointer off constantly and I don't know how others can adjust a lever 100 degrees or so while turning and bouncing and moves your mouse off the virtual knob on the screen.

In real life we seldom used full reverse on landing. We were required by the flight manual to use them but we often just deployed them at idle on a long runway since after a smooth landing the loud shaking could cause passenger to rate a greaser as a bad landing. On a short icy runway was another story.

I guess you can do what I do on my two unit Saitek Throttle set up, ie assign the 4th and 5th levers as reverse axis. Of course it's not realistic that you have to change grip to access the reverse levers, but at least it's not just on/off then.

If my math is correct one for speed brake, two for throttle, one for flaps, and I'm guessing one for Reverse Thrust up & down, with one still left over. Not sure why you mentioned two levers for reversers. Still, not as authentic, but I guess would work... Thanks.

@@rbarlow Interesting. As an amateur simmer I've found that really I've hardly ever really needed the reversers -- just leaves me down closer to the end of runways when not using them. But don't think I've truly ever needed them, at least not when flying properly that is. I'm guessing the flight sims (x plane) in that capacity are accurate to the real world, then. Interesting you guys would use reversers only around idle -- kind of a smack in the face to the manual?

@@mikem.2078 You have one reverser for each engine (unless you are driving an Airbus 380). Then I'd recommend FSUIPC to set it up so that when you load a certain aircraft you can have a profile that is assigned to the aircraft automatically loaded. Typically you would create a profile called eg "four engined jet", "singe prop, or "dual prop" etc. In the profile you specify which lever should perform what action, so you may have a profile where eg for a "four engined jet" lever 1 is speed brake, lever 2-5 are throttles and lever 6 is flaps. This feature alone makes FSUIPC worth buying for me.

To me they seem very small in the videos such as this that I've seen them in and that's kinda putting me off getting one. The same applies for the Saitek/Logitech Yoke which I don't think is true-to-life size and smaller. Are you able to comment on these concerns I have? TIA.

The airliner handles smaller than IRL but if they weren’t the would take up a lot is space and not sit on your desk. The general aviation handles are pretty close to real life sized. If you want to fly only airliners and have plenty to spend there are some nice 1:1 scale quadrants but you would need to build or buy a control pedestal to mount them. The Bravo is a nice compromise between flexibility, realism and cost. It nicely integrates with the Alpha to provide a lot of the controls needed to avoid relying on the mouse and keyboard to fly. For $250 it offers more value than other options I know about.

I prefer use the real knob and instrument in the real cockpit to learn each plane. If you use knob on yoke, you won’t really learn each plane that are different. I like the six handle in VR , eventually the flaps but i prefer using the mouse in real to activate the plane instruments except for power, rpm and mixtures. And i prefer flight simulator 2020. Fs2020 is far superior for me.
