@@punklover99 Yeah, I know the YourMovieSucks guy's stock went down since he had that whole thing about reviewing festival movies he walked out of (and other issues), but his video on this really laid bare what complete nonsense the claim was. The fact that people use "Simba, eh? Sounds a lot like Kimba" as the smoking gun even though both names are just based on the Swahili word for lion, and then the supporting evidence being Kimba animations that were made after The Lion King... it's incredible how they managed to make "The Lion King is just a rip off of Kimba the White Lion" a popular piece of trivia that everyone just assumes is true.

I think the critique of "No one asked for this." has more to do with unnecessary prequels/sequels/spinoffs of established IPs, rather than good original ideas or even good prequels/sequel/spinoffs. No one was asking for a Lion King prequel because it doesn't add anything to a excellent standalone story. Mufasa is trying to capitalize off of the success of the first film by cramming in as many member berries as possible, rather than attempting to tell a good story first.

I thought Mufasa's 'Circle of Life' explanation from the original was perfectly reasonable: they are all happy to be eaten by the lions bc they know the nutrients will eventually get back to the soil and grass, at which point they get to eat them. And that would translate into more nutrients for them, obviously, even though it was their nutrients to begin with and they are dead... frankly the lions are doing them a favour; if they were self-interested they would be feeding themselves to themselves.

All lion cubs are raised by female lions in real life, wtf is this movie smoking. And male Lions, the ones that survive into adulthood are excellent hunters or they starve. Male Lions are exiled from their prides once they become teenagers, and they have to hunt by themselves until they are big and strong enough to defeat an adult male Lion with his own pride to take over. The only help they get is that sometimes brothers will form an alliance and hunt together and share a pride because of strenght in numbers, but that is it. This lead to a situation where the male Lions who reach adulthood and have a pride are excellent hunters.

The last Lion King "live action" film made well over a billion. You can't say that people aren't watching Disney movies. Traditional animation rules, they could make a good movie in that style and it'd still do really well, but they don't want to go back to that. It's a bummer, but it is what it is.

My personal headcannon was that the Lion King was actually the semi mythological founding story of the civilisation from Zootopia and the really important part was Simba switching to insect based diet to peacefully live amongst herbivores.

Saw the movie on Monday, this review was spot on. I’d add tho the revisiting of zimmers music motifs in certain moments 👌🏽 I’m such a sucker for that shit. There were a couple of these callbacks throughout the movie that were fun. Also the lion face cam shots in the action sequences were unintentionally hilarious.

If they wanted to overexplain/overworldbuild this, I'd be totally okay with an internally consistent "Game of Thrones but with lions" treatment. Y'know, you're already fantasy, just take the world building that exists and go ham on it, don't strip out the magical parts by trying to justify them. Just lean into the fact that the original was Hamlet with lions.

Nope, that's an outdated myth born from a lack of information. Male lions absolutely hunt too, they just mostly do it in the thicker vegetation where people don't see as easily, while the females do it more in the open.

No, Lions do hunt, is just that after they get a pride they hunt less because their new job is repel other lions, mate and protect the cubs, and napping, but even then they still hunt occasionally when the pride goes against a big prey.

No, IRL male lions actually hunt quite a lot, but because they are bigger and stronger they can afford to hunt alone, but because they're heavier and slower they do it with more ambush instead of so much running and teamwork. They can also afford to hunt larger prey. They may also help the females on a hunt if it's a very large prey. Male lions usually hunt at night where it's darker to better hide and cooler to not lose so much energy from the heat and exertion. Male lions are forced to learn how to hunt after they kicked out of their prides upon reaching sexual maturity, so they usually will form nomadic coalitions with other subadult lions, helping each other hunt until they grow strong enough to take over the territory of a lion pride.
