Bob, Big fan long time fan, defender of you. but c'mon, you CLEARLY have a chip on your shoulder about these movies to a point where it hinders your ability to review them totally fairly. There's approaching these movies as not a fan and there's being BITTER, Fans are not to blame for the studio's mistreatment of the animators, from what we've heard Animators TOLD them the ugly design was BAD and they were made to move forward until backlash, Its not unreasonable that the market the film was looking to take advantage of (built in IP fan-base) was upset that the thing they were adapting (Sonic) lacked his core appeal and most enduring element (his fucking character design) The fans aren't mad at you because "sonic fans are annoying" (they are) they're mad because you're being a tad dishonest. The first movie is "fine" for what it is and the context around it. The second is the same but a notable improvement. The "Knuckles" TV show was bad, i can't defend that one beyond probably blaming celebrity casting. The Third is insanely better in every-way, A lot of this seems like you went in wanting to dislike it. "Alleged" adults? c'mon. You acted the EXACT same as the mediocre Mario movie which is ON PAR with the first sonic movie (pretty good despite what it is, Mario movie with chris pratt and by fucking illumination) but you praised that because you are a fan, You'd think you could approach this with some tact. I usually am able to respect and see where you come from with reviews even when i don't agree, but everytime you open your mouth about these sonic movies its like... contrarian for its own sake. like you're still stuck in the 90s console war, Mario and Sonic are friends now, they play at the olympics sometimes

Okay, I feel it's important to drop a lesson on subjectivity in reviews and opinion. A reviewer is not providing an objective statement on a movie. Even if they claim they are, it is ultimately objective only by their view and is still and forever will be subjective. It's how they can review one thing positively and yet another product that seems to be cut from the same cloth can be viewed the complete opposite way. Case in point, him reviewing the Mario movie positively while negatively covering the Sonic movies is not a gotcha. It's not a showcase of lack of tact even with his comments because it takes little more than a few seconds to think of who he's referring to which is not the chill Sonic fans that just like a movie but rather the band of childish fools that descend upon any criticism because they can't handle it. It's only dishonest I'd say when you have people who are trained not to think like that but rather to take everything at face value.

To put this review into context: The thing with Bob is that he comes from the 80s cheese generation and his idea of campy fun is stuff like MOTU, TMNT 87 and Thundercats. To the point he has shat on versions like the 2003 TMNT and even the original comics for "taking themselves too seriously" when they're both campy and ridiculous, just in different ways Hence why his seething hatred for Shadow is both easy to understand where he comes from but also incomplete. Shadow is not just a "angry, evil Sonic" he represents what the fanbase loves about 90s/00s camp while also having enough of a character arc to make him likeable. Shadow's status as "evil" applies to what? The first two levels of SA2? The whole point of the character is that he is driven by love, after his face-turn. Again, I know this is a ridiculous character on its face: black and red Sonic with a gun and motorbike, the very embodiment of "this goes hard, feel free to screenshot" but what Bob doesnt get is that is what makes him FUN in the same way the TMNT, He-Man or Lion-O are fun in their boy scout PSA way It seems for the past four years Bob has been extremely bitter that these Sonic movies have went from strength to strength whereas Mario has been stuck with Chris Pratt and the Minions. We're now 3-for-3 with Sonic movies that even the critics have been generally okay with (Bob's put but a small dent in RT's 80+ score, if you care about that sort of thing) where the Mario movie was notoriously shat on for being references: the movie (ironically a criticism you could level at this third one from what i've read, which is fully adapting SA2 wholesale, but I dont know if Bob has ever played that game in order to know the plot) So I would recommend checking out how the other critics feel, I wouldnt listen to a Sonic fan's opinion on this movie just like how Bob's is too biased the opposite direction, if it still is certified fresh in a couple of days go see it. As a Sonic fan and with Knuckles and Shadow as some of my favorites in the franchise I might go, but I skipped 2 because I felt the first film was decent but skewed too young for a fan of the games like me But some of Bob's criticism just on its face seems a bit silly. Like calling Sonic's cast of animal friends "uninteresting" feels like a cope when Sonic has a cast famous for even the most obscure and lamest members having defined personalities and some sort of fanbase. Whereas the Mario cast has diluted itself to the point that even the RPGs dont have good character writing anymore. I also just find it hypocritical to complain about the movie being filmed on green screen when Bob had an infamous tweet defending filming a bar scene in Black Widow in a big greenscreen instead of an actual set, because his fanboyism was so strong he cited the corpses from Twilight Zone as their reasoning

Personally though I think if you meet these films where they are, accept you're gonna have to deal with the weird human stuff and that that's the tone these flicks have, you'll have a really good time with them. Especially Sonic 2 & Knuckles. I do think it's weird that you're harping on the quality of the script though when you gave Mario a 9/10 despite it being the blandest by the numbers corporate slop I've ever seen. A film that's 90% references and the 10% thats the actual plot is just nothing. Not all fandoms are inherently malevolent, which seems to be the running idea behind railing against people trashing the original design. It's case by case, so I don't think it's fair to lump Sonic fans into the same boat as like the Star Wars douchebags being racist every chance they get or something. And the fact is that the design WAS ass. Visually repellant on its own merits that wouldn't have sold a single toy to kids even if we didn't have the real thing to compare it to, and if your kids franchise scares off that target audience, then you're DOA. The first movie would've been right alongside Cats 2019 as an infamous bomb that KZbinrs would still be making bank roasting to this day, and for what? Some executive at Paramount would've been too proud to just make a character look like the thing they're trying to make money off of? Got em...?! If that's really Bob's whole grudge against these movies, then he really needs to let it go already.

@jadedheartsz well, it's impossible to know for sure really but I think the direction of this series probably did change after the redesign. Given the inclusion of things like the egg-o-matic and death egg robot in the sequel that shift the general visual language of the films to be in line with the games, I'm not sure we'd have got that in a sequel to that original film (if we'd have even got a sequel at all)

@the-aspiring-creator42494 күн бұрын
That's just because the Mario movie to him is unadulterated fun. This is the thing about personal opinions that I feel people don't get. Your enjoyment is not tied to something's quality. A movie could have a wack-ass script but you could still personally enjoy it enough it ranks high. Plus with the Mario movie, it never promised a big stunning story, the games outside of the spin-offs never really had stunning stories so if you're willing? You go with the ride. I mean I fucking love the Mario movie because as a fan of that franchise, it delivers what feels like a genuinely loving tribute to the series and its history with a good sense of humor, genuinely beautiful animation and just fun. Sonic... I mean... I haven't seen Sonic 3. I hope it's good but this is the thing. The bar was set so low with that initial trailer. Sonic has also had a pretty rocky history thanks to SEGA being so woefully inconsistent and often incompetent with its mascot so it was guaranteed that as long as they don't suck to such a massive degree? It's fine. But these movies really feel shackled. The first movie people forget had its first trailer shit on for the design AND the fact it looked like the most basic "CG fantastical character gets plopped into the human world" story that we've seen in Smurfs and so many other adaptations. They changed the design... but it still was the same kind of movie. Sonic 2 changed things a bit, leaning more into the games... but it still was a typical family movie with Sonic stuff in it and a few references. The Mario movie eats, sleeps, breathes and shits Mario. The Sonic movies are still only gradually leaning into the games.

Expected after his review of the first 2. This is clearly some weird vendetta against Sonic at this point. Like, I would argue Mario and Sonic 1 are roughly equal as movies. But saying 2 is the best one and that 3 is a downgrade is just, wrong. I mean the reason that they didn't need to explain everything in movie 3 is that they explain how it got there in the first 2 movies. Sonic 3 is easily the best so far and it blows away Mario in terms of what it delivers in terms of a Sonic story. The problem with reviews like these in general is that the vendetta against this franchise is only notable because of how obviously he's trying to downtalk the audience along with the film. I remember those old Game Overthinker videos where you used to mock Sonic endlessly while glazing Mario as mediocre but serviceable when Sonic was at a low point in the series but now Mario is treading water and Sonic is trending upward for the fans and bringing in new ones with each new product again. It's like you want to revive the video game wars that you complained about existing so often in those old Overthinker videos. You clearly have no concept for why these movies are appealing to people. So just, stop reviewing them if you made it 3 in and you can't see why people like them. While I have not seen Sonic 3 yet (I do hope it's good and to see it soon.), I have seen Sonic 1 and 2 and frankly, I do not get the obsessive ride-or-die mentality fans seem to have when discussing these movies and this approach to opposing criticism. "Oh you like the Mario movie so opinions are invalid yada yada." Or maybe, just maybe. The person has a different opinion. They just don't like a movie and that's okay. Reviews are about the individual video creator, writer or whatever telling you what THEY thought of it. You are free to take it or leave it, it's not that deep. If they have a take you disagree with? You just disagree with it, it's fine. That's how reviews work, people can disagree. If you ADORE this movie? Keep adoring it! Most critics worth their salt would tell you to keep enjoying it because to let a critic shape your thoughts about a movie is to toss aside your ability to just have an opinion. Critics are not arbiters of objectivity, it's still subjective as all reviews are. Speaking as an admitted grump who when it comes to Sonic I struggle to vibe with it these days, I've tried to get into the Sonic movies and frankly the more I've tried, while there are positives? It still disappoints me to no end that these movies are basically 90s adaptations being made in modern times. They're barely Sonic movies, they're generic family movies you watch through hoping to get just the tiniest nugget of Sonic stuff and when you get it, you clap, you smile... and then it's immediately followed up by some of the most cringe-inducing, sometimes PAINFULLY unfunny gags brought about Jim Carrey playing himself and not Dr. Eggman, James Marsden probably really hoping he's getting a good check for this and the Sonic crew... being fine overall but mostly reduced to family movie tropes. Hell, I remember my reaction to the Sonic 3 trailer. Truth be told, I wasn't hyped but I knew I'd check it out because I love Shadow and the trailer is a microcosm of what these movies are. The Shadow stuff is great, it got me really pumped. Seeing him ride a motorcycle brought back my nostalgia for his edgelord game that I still kinda dig today, I was impressed that we are actually going full hog (No pun intended) on the Maria stuff. It had my attention... And it friggin' lost me the MOMENT Carrey's Eggman showed up and it further lost me with the reveal Gerald is alive and that he's also Jim Carrey, meaning we were in for double the cringe. Honestly? This is the family movie equivalent of the Transformers films to me. Sure they don't have the Michael Bay vibes, they're not offensive, they're not the worst movies I've ever watched, they are fine... but goddamn I am so done with these movies and their drip-feeding of Sonic content, them just jingling keys in my face. The Mario movie was flawed, very flawed but I still go to bat for it because it is Mario to the core. It is unashamed of the franchise it's based on and it embraces it. Transformers One earlier this year was fantastic because it's a movie that adores the series it's based on and doesn't compromise. The Sonic movies really feel like they are a tug of war between those that actually want to make a dope Sonic movie and Paramount execs who just want their family movie franchise.
@maydaymemer46604 күн бұрын
Youre completely right and I agree with all of this, the films do have a 90s vibe that seems like it’s there to catch the stray adults who go “oh i remember sonic” land the series is essentially having to heavily compromise its identity because it really has two different films it has to make: it has to adapt the games while also having to be a sequel to a pretty generic family film However i think the comments and my problems have with Bob’s take specifically is the vibe I have always got from him is that he doesnt like Sonic on a conceptual level. His book says he viewed Mario as something important to his childhood, that having Nintendo validated as a cultural mainstay helped his mental health and that thusly Sonic showing up made him resentful of that franchise. That sort of bias seeps into his critique, where to him anything Sonic is graded on a curve where it has to be flawless in order to bypass his view of Sonic as Poochie 2.0 Like it feels like Bob has a very low standard for a Mario or Godzilla movie (“I clapped when I saw Rainbow Road/Mothra!”) but then gets annoyed because “You CANT have an edgy talking animal with a gun and a melodramatic tragic backstory (unless youre rocket raccoon)”. Like criticizing how one is handled well and one isnt is fine, not even bothering to engage with the other because youre just viscerally against it is weird And again Sonic fans should calm down. Bob’s in the minority here. The movie is doing fine critically and will make a ton of money, as sad as it is to get excited for financial results of a children’s film. I just personally find the psychology of it fascinating and enjoy the pile on
@the-aspiring-creator42494 күн бұрын
@@maydaymemer4660 To be fair, his book is primarily reflective of his life and really, we all have ridiculous feelings like that. People are lying if they are saying they were never bothered by ridiculous meaningless crap like that. Heck, I still see people today who will froth at the mouth the moment someone says something as innocuous as say "I didn't really care for Dragon Ball.". I don't get the feeling of this bias seeping into the critique. That being said, if you go looking, it's not hard to just project that onto the review because if you're going into something to invalidate it, you're often looking for those reasons. I also don't think he has a low standard. I remember when he talked about the Mario movie before it came out and repeatedly said how he really wasn't that thrilled about it because he wasn't looking forward to a Mario movie made by the studio behind the Minions. Then the movie came out, he saw it and he liked it overall. It was the games brought to life and with such an earnest and genuinely sense of love from the crew behind it. With Godzilla, he adored Minus One which takes the character seriously with his problems with 2014 being that he found it drab, boring and overly long and enjoyed King of the Monsters because for him, he liked the story and the giant monster stuff that it had, even disagreeing with fellow critics about it having no substance. He even basically said that the stuff involving the humans in Godzilla vs. Kong was overall weaker to him. The thing about reviews is they are subjective. You have what you like and what you don't like and they are based on your opinion, it's simple as that. I don't enjoy the pile on. I look at it and I see nothing but children being bratty that someone doesn't like the shiny new toy they all like. Children who frankly should learn that opinions exist and that it is totally okay for people to disagree. To say "You don't get it." or "You just have a bias." is childish when really they could just keep loving the movie. I mean, speaking for myself, I personally love Godzilla 2014. I was not bugged by Bob's review. I really like a lot of movies that he has trashed but it doesn't bug me because we're different people with different tastes, experiences and so on that shape how we look at things.

Yea but theres the thing, he likes the mario movie because it “has love for the games”. Thats just these movies. Same problems with just being setpiece after setpiece of membah that, but because it’s Mario he’s down to clown with it. @@maydaymemer4660 He noted with Mario though he wasn't sure about it when they first announced it, especially because it was gonna be made by Illumination. Hell his review explained it nice and plainly. He found that movie was good in the same way modern Mario games were in that it's exactly what it says it is, does everything pretty well and brings over elements of the games faithfully. He noted it's the Mario movie he'd have loved as a kid but that as an adult, it's enjoyable that's most notable for how young it skews. He acknowledged the fact it plays things safe but that it has heart where it counts. This argument really falls flat because it misses a big factor about opinions and reviews. Subjectivity is king here. Objectivity may come in as far as pointing out genuine mistakes like say changing times of day between cuts but the rating is determined primarily by overall enjoyment. It's not a matter of standards and frankly critics aside from the truly snobbish have long since dropped this idea that they have ridiculously high standards.

I get having negative feelings about the first one, it was basically just another generic Fish Out Of Water kid's movie, but I feel like with the other two they've done a lot more to embrace the full scope of the games and also the uniqueness of its new cinematic world. Lee Majdoub has been a fun breakout character as Jim Carrey's henchman, who himself has been more alive than he has been in years. They're doing exactly what these movies should be doing; they SHOULD be sidelining the human characters more to the side, now that the introductions are out of the way, so that more of the fantastical action stuff can take the floor. I don't know what else you could really ask out of these films unless you're just that fundamentally against the premise of Sonic the Hedgehog altogether, in which I don't get why he's the line compared to any other wacky video game IP.

They DON'T sideline the humans, though. For a man who wrote, "In my memories, the Great Console Wars dragged on like my own private Vietnam," it sounds like he's having PTSD flashbacks of that war over the existence of Sonic movies. I understand someone not liking the Sonic movies and thinking they fall short of something. (Hell, for me no Sonic TV/movie has risen to the heights of SATAM Sonic TV series yet, so I get it. Very few of the movies really hold up well for me in the re-watch either.) But to rant about the movie like it's a 2/10 and disrespect everyone who likes it, only to then turn around and give it a 5/10 anyway really speaks to something here. I would have saved my energy by simply giving a silent shoulder shrug and wordlessly flashing the 5/10 score at the end. Sure, it's probably better to flesh out that review more than that, but when the majority of the review script is just a violent flashback to the old "Console Wars," maybe just hire a ghost writer.

Folks-n-friends...I do not yet know how you or Bob feels about this movie. And that's cause I just got home at 230 in the morning, you see... The reason I did is that one of my good friends operates the smaller movie theater in my city. Thus, I just got the privilege to see this film in empty movie theater with some of my closest friends. While enjoying the luxuries of sipping my whisky and puffing upon my pen while simultaneously cheering and reacting in a form not traditionally acceptable in movie theaters. So, I just had an amazing movie experience. For me, this was the most hype kid's film I've seen in my 33 years of life. However, that's because I'm very, very biased to love SA2B with my whole heart. I can already kinda guess at the things folks won't like. And it definitely took a lot of creative liberties when adapting stuff to fit as a Part 3 to this film trilogy. But I feel the love seeping out of the art I just watched. And maybe I'm just a hyped up old fool cause I had a good day...also..I'd wager any of your criticisms of the film are quite valid..but, for my part, I will love this film with my whole heart.💙❤️

@@maydaymemer4660 debatable. I find S3&K to be a bit more bloated and less focused of a game than S2. It’s the same reason that Portal is better than Portal 2. How many times in a playthrough of S3&K does the game force you to stand around doing nothing for so long that it triggers Sonic’s idle animation? Too many, that’s for sure. There are a lot of great aspects of S3&K, to the point I’d place it RIGHT behind S2; but it’s held back by being full of so much that should have been left on the cutting room floor. In a parallel universe S3&K was released as a single game, cutting out a lot of fluff and condensing the game into a single superior experience. It’s just not what we got in this universe.

I can respect what youre getting at, Sonic 2 has a quicker pace, i would say youre exaggerating a ton. Sonic 3 just has more interesting exploratory level design while still maintaining a quick pace. The only thing i’d cut is Carnival Night Act 2 and Sandopolis Act 2 which still leaves a rather meaty game which i find easier to replay than Sonic 2. Sonic 2 is excellent but the game stops having real levels once you get to Sky Chase whereas the climax of Sonic 3 is one of the best levels in the franchise

Can't speak for three because I've yet to see it but I gotta disagree so far these movies, while not high cinema, are frankly better than they had any right to be. Take the first one for instance, I could pick apart the themes of that movie for hours. There's so many little lines that paint this dichotomy between Sonic and Robotnik. They share essentially the same backstory of being alone but veer off as the movie progresses. Robotnik takes the stance of he never had a place so he made his own place above everyone else and has to always knock people down a peg even if they're entirely there to aid and/or obey him. Sonic on the other hand has to go through the usual found family story and at the end of it the lesson is naturally that value isn't about who you put down but who you lift up. Even if you made Sonic ugly again and changed all the names to not be tied to an IP it is a wonderful if flawed movie. They could have cashed in with a shallow "Gotta go fast hedgehog beats robot man" story, they didn't and I love these movies for that.

@@JPD2587 I don't think it's that simple, Bob likes conventionally attractive things too, it's just more of him holding a grudge against a thing because of fans, he did it with the Cuphead animated series cause people rightfully called out a games journalist(BTW i'm not one of those gamergater types, but that one guy really did suck at the game)for being bad at playing the game and he kinda did it with Mass Effect cause he didn't like the Retake ME3 movement causing the game to get a new ending(and his "respect the artists true vision" argument falls apart considering the actual ME3 writers thought the original ending was dogshit as well).

I think its the toxic Fandom of Sonic that gets outraged for being objective about the movie.
@the-aspiring-creator42494 күн бұрын
It's not really even objectivity since opinions are always subjective as much as reviews are. It is toxic fandom though. Sonic fans of the kind of breed that the internet seems to be swarming with cannot seem to accept in any capacity that there are people out there who just won't like a movie. It can never be a case where you give a thing an honest try and then you just find it doesn't appeal. It has to be that you just are trying to put it down, that you don't desire anyone to be happy because these are the people that put stock into the idea that reviews are objective statements rather than subjective points.
