The new *2020 1100cc Africa Twin* is like a BMW R1200 GS with chain drive. I am surprised (a little) at their similarity. I owned a BMW R1150 R & owned a 2017 Africa twin. Now I have a 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sports. IN MY OPINION The BMW R1150 R was a comfortable, solid, fun, powerful bike. BUT it was expensive to buy & keep running. *_Get the extended warranty._* The Africa Twin or Africa Twin Adventure Sports is fun, reliable, is a looker, has "enough" power. AND it is much cheaper to buy & also cheaper to keep running for a long time. _Happy Valentine's Day!_

Great review Crumble. My previous bike was the last of the 1150 GSA, SE which was a fantastic all round machine. Having had my ATAS since June, I was saying to a mate last night that I was starting to consider I was missing the extra ponies. The thing is, I dont think there will ever be just 1 bike that will satisfy my needs. I'm sticking with my ATAS because I simply love it and all that it does. (for now).

Ive seen a few vids showing GSes on their side when mudding. I own an old RT and noticed the bikes big desire to rotate about its crankshaft when revved, a quirk of having a longitudinal crank. Remove the friction between tires and turf and slide outs can occur when throttling.

Good review C. Credit gotta go where credit it belongs.definitely a good all rounder the GS. I recently took a friend to my local dealer to buy a full blown 18 TE. I only test drove one 3 years ago and indeed the power was good, yet not overwhelming or butt cringing. I also use to own a K1300R from them, beast of a bike and not as common ,love it due to the inline 4 ,but the shaft transmission I found it lacking on bends on a more sportier ride, just didn’t felt connected to the front .I am coming from street bikes myself and novice to off-road. So,for me , a big fan of inline 4 , I am the happy owner of a 17S1000r picked up approved used and a new 17 AT DCT. This combo gives me both on road thrills and satisfies my novice off-road needs plus travelling. Never owned a Honda but I think the AT looks great in tricolour and its a good all rounder.also sounds great with an aftermarket and no DB,bit of a hooligans as you mention. The S1k its complete crackers though and what they did with that inline 4 it’s jut magic. It even has way more touring options that the AT actually ..

I'm slightly stuck between the AT, GS and a tiger for my next bike. I was erring to the GS bit I do a little off road while I'm dogging. I think the ladies would prefer the GS too as the seat is not too high for them to bend over and is quite sumptuous

I had my heart set on a GS but the prices are a bit silly. Had a number of GS’s from 2004 to 2017 models... very much a GS man- moved to the AT this year, mainly because of the rising price of the beemer- they are stupid money- the AT is a cheaper way to get your kicks! You summed it up mate- The Bmw is a significantly better road bike but the AT is more of an owners bike- not as frightened to work on it, not as frightened to take off road, feels significantly lighter and easier to manoeuvre off the bike... The motor sounded like it had no oil in it what so ever and the fork tubes things looked flimsy, when I was riding it I could see the front wheel attachers (fork tubes) moving around so much it made my nipsey twitch. I took it back after thirty minutes. The guy at the dealers said "what's up you had it all afternoon?" I told him he'd have to pay ME to ride that heap again! So multistrada Enduro it is then! Sold my '16 AT after 33k km on the odo for a '18 GSA and never looked back. The ride quality was 100% better with better suspension and verified by the missus when we tour. It shows when I took 2 yrs to chalk up 30k for the mileage while only 3 months to chalk up 8k on the GSA. The AT's alright as the engine is pretty bulletproof and the cost of replacement parts for pads, plugs etc are way cheaper but the GSA is really in a different league. The only thing I miss on the AT is the exhaust rumble from my Arrow exhaust. That is the only thing that has more presence than a GSA with an akra.

Personally, I think it's an Africa Twin beater, that's why I bought a GS over the AT. I'm "only" 5ft 7 vs your 6ft 4 so I'm in a more natural off road stance on the GS compared with you. I did rotate the handlebars forwards though

If you have extra money than GS is your friend. Otherwise Africa is the king of the offroad!

Don’t really see how you compare these two, on my second GS. More power, more comfort and can do anything...I always buy nearly new and the running costs are only higher because you do so many more miles because it’s so so rideable. Most people who knock them have never ridden one...

I like it and yeah you're right they are very different bikes really. Nice to throw it out there though. i enjoyed the comparison.

Notice you didn't focus in on the looks of that GS. And the screen and dash aint a nice place to be. The whole world and his aunt say they're a great bike but there won't be one in my garage.

Sam to be honest mate. I liked it to ride but it didn't make my tummy fizz like the AT did when I first set eyes on it.

Where's the Bollocks? Combine that with your review for the most entertaining reviews.

Nice one Crumble, I ride a GS and love it... shame about the whole image thing, load of bollocks really, it’s just a great bike.
I don’t wanna ride a gs because they are such a nice bike I’ll probably want one..... the thing that’s puts me off is all the ‘WANNA BE POLICEMEN GANG’ ride them ..you see big groups of the fuckers with ‘POLITE’ hi-viz tops on riding in synchronised patterns blocking up the country lanes here in Kent and when you pass them it feels like your gonna get bummed at your next stop. ✌️

The GS is a wonderful bike but there comes a time in life when you are either ready for a cardigan or not.
