I bought 2 of these, both Southern. Mine have gotten some miles on them at the club. They pull nice, operate flawlessly, and consist well together out of the box. Awesome. Thanks James and looking forward to seeing your ideas on the next layout...

These are amazing models, as are all models by Rapido. Great company always pushing the boundaries of what you can do in plastic, and great customer service. Most of their models don't necessarily represent anything that I model, but i find by the time they're released I find a reason to buy them and have rarely been disappointed. Rapido and ScaleTrains are leaving the other manufacturers in the dust right know with their level of detail, accuracy, performance and" value" considering all locomotives for some reason all cost about the same. What they're doing is great for the industry, pushing it forward. Thanks for doing these reviews. Good luck on the move.

I believe when I did a review on my BC Rail B36-7 locomotive, I got the wheel squeal sound on the basic NCE DCC duel controller. Because there is definitely a function this even when you have the prime mover off.

I'm surprised u couldn't get the brake squeal. I have #7764 from rapido in SP and a santa fe version. As a truck driver I got a NCE dcc starter set (so I could set it up and take down when i have extra time when I'm down for repairs and mantainace)but cant get it to work with the kato track I have, so I just use regular dc for the time being till I can figure out what to do. But I got the brake squeal on both to work when I tested them on a very short track.

HO Hobbyist Ya the Rapido’s are not cheap anyway you look at em. I got a pair of HO Draper Tapers and I’m pretty happy with em. I also have the mid train dome and two of the older “continental cars” and those are simply fantastic. There is just way too much cool stuff out there nowadays and my wallet can’t keep up! 😀

@@markiewodi3371 yep! And as a devoted LV modeler I'm in the unfortunate situation of being broke just as companies release LV models. Now I've got a long list of Lehigh Valley equipment I hope to buy, including an RS-11, but no resources to do it with.

Has anyone else had this problem? : I bought one of these from modeltrainstuff in mid-December. After about a week, the locomotive started running poorly and would make awkward jumps and movements even when set to run at a consistent speed step. When decelerating, the locomotive would cling to its initial speed and then, with a few jolts, abruptly reach a slower speed. The locomotive (possibly the motor or gears) made a strange noise, but I couldn't determine what the cause was, even after removing the shell. With more "break in' movements I was able to have it running smoother, but it's running poorly again. Especially around slow-medium speeds, the locomotive has a tendency to jump in speed (without being commanded to) and then abruptly return to its programmed speed anywhere from 2 to 30 seconds later. During these 'jumps,' the locomotive produces this internal noise. I have contacted Rapido and they have told me to send the locomotive back to them. Thankfully, they have wonderful customer service. Hopefully they can fix this or send me a new one, because I'm not too happy about spending $265 just to have a crappy running loco. :/

I had the same problem before the decoder fried itself; had to pay $35 to send it to Canada back to Rapido for repair. Haven't received it back yet. Had same poor performance issues with their RDC's. I'm not impressed with Rapido's China factory quality control.

The step in the hood was a primary spotting feature of a GE Dash-7 from an earlier Universal series. For instance, a U23B had no step in the hood, a B23-7 had the step.

I noticed that your model has the same mold divots on the long hood as mine have. They are for the Southern and Norfolk Southern version walkway lights. They use the same shell for nearly every road name. I like the model but to me it's like a highly detailed Atlas. The stanchions are plastic and the railings are metal. Another dislike is the playable horn and the grade crossing horns are not the same. I also had piping on the rear of the fuel tank that had to be bent into proper position as it was sticking out vs down as should be.

Totally agree. I've seen nothing but raves and raves about this model but it's good, not great. Same price as Gensis and Scaletrains but not up to their detail on the shells. Where are the see through grills? ST GE engines have them. To my eyes, I pre-ordered 2 the shell is not any better detailed then the old Atlas GE engines from 20+ years ago. I will give them credit for having a lot of details below the side sills. Scaletrains includes a keep-a-live device on the board of their DCC equipped and none DCC equipped units. I saw where someone post how great Rapido's service was. One of my engines is a Santa Fe. The directions did not explain how to operate the flashing cab beacon. Emailed Rapido and requested information on how to do this. Two months later still waiting on their reply. Luckily I saw another review and discovered it's activated by F17. I read and bought into all the hype regarding this model, wanted it to be a homerun and that would lead them to expanding their GE offerings, possible even a nice new C30-7/C36-7. But at this point I do not plan on purchasing any of their future offerings. Again this is a good product, not great they should be slightly less then what Gensis and Scaletrains are listing for.
