Sad to say the complainants about the AI have some legit grievances, but you also have to pay attention to the situation. If you put the AI on "Attack" when you are cornered and in danger of being flanked or set her to "Cover" when you have the opportunity to flank the enemy, that's just a misread on the part of the player. This is super evident when people fight Wesker and it doesn't occur to them (even when playing with another human!) to provide a distraction so you can actually land hits on him. Personally in terms of a remake I'd rather see CV first. And then 5 to have more separation of the characters along with co-op, to the point where they either have to support each other more often or find a way to link up again. Resurrect the heat / sun / mirage effect that was teased in 2008, alongside other elements to make daylight as eerie and imposing as nighttime.

It's a good Coop experience. The problem is that its not a good single player or even survival horror experience which is what left people so divided on the force coop partner mechanic that wasn't part of the series before. If RE5 gets remade there is definitely a lot that needs adjusting.

@The_Lucent_Archangel8 ай бұрын
@@vodkavecz This gets trotted out a lot, but much of the blame falls squarely on Sony's shoulders. They got into a huff about Capcom doing an RE project for Dreamcast (which ended up being Code Veronica) because they wanted 3 RE titles on the PS1 regardless of where the console was in its life cycle. So Capcom had the choice of compromising their vision for a new title set after Raccoon City by trying to make it work on PSX or throw together a game that reused some assets and call it RE 3. For the record, they did quite a bang up job considering how innovations like ammo crafting, dodging, etc. didn't even appear in CV at all. The remake, they have less of an excuse. They were clearly in a rush to redo RE 4 for the easy money which is why they ironically skipped right over CV also.

I think RE4 still has the spirit of what Resident Evil is about. 1. The villagers used to be normal people, and their village felt lived in. The ending even showcases how the Los Illuminados ruined their lives. 2. Death cults are just as common as evil corporations, and Saddler in the original was a conman who exploited Luis's scientific knowledge to gain more power. 3. In this instance, Ashley is the out of her depth everywoman caught up in power plays between spies like Ada and operatives like Leon and Krauser.

Idk man. RE4 is my all time favorite for all its creepy but goofy charm. A game I thought could never be truly remade. But this remake (other than RE2 of course) is possibly the best possible remake of any highly acclaimed game ever. Only recently finished it and I dove right back in. I actually felt for Leon’s struggle to redeem himself for his perceived failures in RE2. Moments with Ashley were refreshingly heartfelt and also light hearted, Luis was absolutely great, Ada definitely didn’t get much added to her (other than the ending scene.. good choice) and damn I felt the disappointment when Leon had to dispense with Krauser. Maybe after more replays I’ll find more to gripe about with this remake, but thus far, its not only a terrific remake but just a solid game that anyone should play. That is a nice and fair review. Personaly I replayed the original right after the Remake, and I must say I didn't miss any of the improvements. It requires more of your spacial awareness, since you can't move the camera that freely, but that adds a lot to the tension. Leon feels much faster and agile on the original, and all guns feel much more precise. Weapons are very well balanced on the remake, but that takes away a little of the joy of finding out which weapon is the best. Storywise, yeah, Leon didn't get the "modern" take on white male characters, but still feel much less capable than in the original. Ashley feels less annoying and actually helps in some moments, which is a good improvement, but in some scenes it definitely felt forced. I think they didn't do anything interesting with Louis besides turning him into a comic relief, and Ada is just there to bait DLC. I think not having Salazar and Saddler constantly getting in contact with Leon made them less memorable, there is no relationship with the villains and the hero so you barely feel anything once you dispose of them. Overall, not a bad game, but I wouldn't trade the original over this.
@gstaghter80138 ай бұрын
I played the og after finishing the remake and I felt the same way. I actually realized the og had such smooth animations compared to the remake. I think your take on the spatial awareness thing is good also. Some people are so quick to dismiss a game just because of the controls but the controls were great. I’m not exactly a fan of the weird way the characters can run in circles in the remake to dodge attacks, constant parrying, and it’s cool that you can walk and shoot at the same time, but it’s unrealistic and unnecessary. The OG forsure has more tension
@Peer1658 ай бұрын
Hard disagree. The remake just overall feels better to play and supports superior level design, scarier parts and skarper AI. The knife parry mechanics are so damn good they give new life to the situational moment-to-moment combat.
@gstaghter80138 ай бұрын
@@Peer165 the parry’s are great but it kinda makes the games really easy. But I do like the design personally. I didn’t really get scared with the remake. Back in 2004ish the og was pretty creepy. It was the first game to run from a chainsaw man so it created so many unique experiences. I see what your saying though. I can understand why people prefer the remake. As long as we can look back at how amazingly amazing the og was/still is 🫡
@daviddamasceno60638 ай бұрын
@@Peer165Level desgin is pretty much the same, I don't get why you mean it's better. The visuals are, well... darker, and with the updated graphics you can argue it's more scary. The parry mechanic was a necessary adition because Leon is much slower in this game and he simply can't hold his ground as well as in the original. But it's such an OP move that they had to limit how much you can do it by making your knife breakable, which also means you'll need to constantly pay to repair it. It was one of the biggest annoyances in the game.
@Peer1658 ай бұрын
@@daviddamasceno6063Well, the level design follows the original closely but is expanded in some areas with more side-missions added from the merchant. The mill section early on in the village is a nice and logical addition to the setting that feels more lived-in and less "video gamey" now. Same goes for the new enemies types as well where the bullhead juggernaut is a very wellcome addition. The darker mood and lighting does wonders for the atmosphare and scare factor. The aspects of Leon being slower but more versatile in combat helps with the survival horror aspect the game is going for. I still find him nimble enough when sprinting away. The knife degradation keeps the player from being to reliant on the weapon which I do feel is a fair compromise. Still, the knife's power and durability can be upgraded which alleviates some annoyance but still keeps you on your toes. For me it's no more cumbersome than the very limited inventory space and saving system in the older games. I think Capcom nailed that fine line between new and old with this remake. The original will always be the GOAT but this remake improved upon alot. Some things could be better, sure, (that goes without saying) but as a game Resident Evil 4 remake is just a great, great time.

I surely would like to see a review on Red Dead Redemption 2 by the Critical Drinker, mainly in what regards to storytelling.
@alondite2158 ай бұрын
Storytelling in games that primarily use cutscenes to tell their stories is rarely very good. For more reasons than I care to get into right now, but a few include the fact that cutscenes fight against the agency and interactive nature of the medium, that they're basically just exposition shoehorned into the moment-to-moment action, that they can create dissonance between the plot exposited during cutscenes and the plot created by the player through gameplay, which is the more important one _by far_ ...the list goes on. You can only pretend that RDR2 has a good story if you ignore the fact that it has gameplay because the two are completely divorced from each other. But if you do that then the story has massive, gaping holes. Cinematic storytelling is broken by interactivity. Not to mention that trying to turn video games into movies just makes them a shittier version of something that already exists instead of something that only video games are capable of being. RDR2 is functionally a movie that randomly stops and forces you to press a bunch of buttons on your remote before it will start playing again. And it's about as shallow-playing, too, unfortunately. I put like 300 hours into that game, but let's not pretend that it's anything more than a video game that doesn't understand what being a video game actually means.

Now Resident evil is back in small claustrophobic locations....until RE8 came out and you were fighting wearwolves, Vampires and Dragons, in a big castle filled with Horrific mutations. This series is just a Mess, but not in a bad way. RE4 was awesome back in the day. And I have to admit: similar to RE2 remake and Dead Space remake, this one actually was better in my opinion. I think most characters come out better, are better written, Ashley while not "not annoying" is way better and acts more appropriate to her age for the most part. As mentioned in this video I think Ada is the only character that fell flat. Not sure if it is the voice actress alone or if she just didn't get the right direction, but Ada was way better in the RE2 remake. But besides that I think the story has ben fleshed out a bit more, characters get a bit more background information for the most part (if you find it, some of it is hidden in the exploration part of the game). Again, similar to RE2 remake and Dead Space it feels like they respect and like the original, had enough time and ressources for this game and loved to improve on the original. RE3 I think simply was rushed out, maybe they needed more time, because what is there wasn't terrible.

I’ve enjoyed them all with 4 being my favorite. Since I didn’t play the originals, I didn’t really have any expectations of what the series should be, and honestly, I’m glad I didn’t. Yeah, there can be plenty of things to nit pick, but overall, I just like that these games are unapologetically themselves. The writing is cheesy, and it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but in a world where every bit of media is scrutinized and expected to somehow change the game, I can appreciate stories that aren’t trying to do that. Especially in a time where everyone is doing terrible remakes, it’s nice that some companies stick (mostly) to the spirit of the original.

RE4 is great, and I dig the REmake of it, but RE2 on PS1 is still my favorite. The mood, characters, and divided campaigns really make it special. I like the RE2 REmake as well, but the OG is still the best for me.

Fun Tip: Play Krauser in mercenaries He moves faster and his knife is unlimited use and intended to be his primary weapon but it's unclear ingame. When wielding the knife, he can dodge in all four directions and takes less damage. It's thrilling to knife and melee groups of enemies and his back dodge move is a backflip

This is essentially the perfect remake. First, and most importantly, it addresses every one of the original game's (very few) game design issues. Resident Evil 4 is one of the most well-designed and best-playing video games ever made, but the game becomes somewhat more linear once you realize that there's a safe and abusable sequence of actions that works for most situations in the game. Put yourself in a position where enemies can't get behind you, ideally where you can funnel enemies toward you, shoot one in the face for a guaranteed stun, then follow-up with a melee attack to take advantage of the generous invincibility frames, good damage, and wide AoE. The shotgun also has much stronger crowd control than in the remake. This is effectively the safest and most efficient way of playing a large majority the game, and the game doesn't really do anything about it. Remake not only addresses this, but adds additional wrinkles. In remake, a shot to the face doesn't guarantee a stun (stun chance is handled by other things), so it can't be relied on to get you out of a tight spot. This also means that enemies are going to end up close to you more often, so the game gives you an improved knife, a duck, a parry, and slightly more (and more intuitive) movement in order to compensate. This also serves to improve the feel and fluidity of the gameplay as a whole. A shot that stuns can still be followed-up with a melee, but it doesn't have the same area-clearing power it had before, so you're forced to make use of more of your now larger toolkit in order to play successfully. There are obviously a lot more design differences, but that's the core difference that really defines how each game plays. And despite sharing mostly the same on-screen forms, the functions and actually playing the games are quite different. The game also succeeds at being familiar, but also feeling like something new. To me it felt like playing the original game for the first time again. Rooms are lifted from the original game, but then mirrored, or placed in a different spot, or there's extra geometry or new paths, or some combination of the above. There was this persistent feeling of "I recognize this, but I don't know exactly what it is" on top what I knew the game was _likely_ to throw at me having played the original, just not knowing exactly when or how. I also appreciated the better sense of time and urgency in the remake (though I can't forgive that plodding, practically scripted walking section near the end). The campiness from the original isn't really a thing a remake, but that's OK. A remake doesn't have to replace the original, especially when the original is so good. Their differences allow them to stand on their own for their own merits, and for each to offer a unique experience. That's much better than just replacing an old thing with a new thing. Both games are recognizably Resident Evil 4, but they each offer a different take on the game's events.

Resident Evil 4 not only changed the series, but every single action game since has copied everything that made RE4 great, even Fortnite has the same gameplay. RE4 was a before and after in the videogame media. This remake, what it does best is it's focus on melee combat, and that's overall it. Giving Krauser a background in exchange of not having Saddler appear until the end of the game was a huge mistake. You saw Saddler pretty much at the early hours of the game, you knew he was the bad guy, and Krauser's background story doesn't add anything to him, that he didn't have in the previous game, it actually tries to make him a "bad guy who went bad, because he had good intentions", that really makes villains lame. The game is shorter than the original on the Castle and Island sections, and the bosses are way easier than on the original. A nice remake, but, for me, the original is still better.

I really liked this game and indeed it is a really good game, but I feel like people exaggerate on praising it and ignore some of it's flaws. Before anyone comes with the Nostalgia, I decided to play the OG RE4 right before playing the Remake so it's flaws are also present in my head. Ashley while better in the looks also yells like hell, but worse her AI is Sheva tier, I got more game overs from her than I did in the OG. Leon might have escaped the pussification, but not emofication. I was listening to the intro and I could swear I was gonna hear "Craaaawling in my skin. These wounds, they will not heal". He's an emo and an asshole, something that the OG wasn't, but then he sometimes acts similar to the OG making his character a mess. This is something that the game suffers, it does things that the OG did, but fails to understand why the OG did, Luis got surgery to remove his plaga, but the plaga was still removed by radiation like the OG, so how did Luis cut himself open if he can remove it by radiation? Hunningan lost the signal until the end of the game because of a storm, but somehow that storm allows Luis, Ada and Wesker to communicate freely. Why? You're telling me Wesker an Luis have better gear than the US special services? The reason is because in the OG the Iluminados jacked the line between Leon and Hunningan and comms are reestablished when the Island is blown up. Ada is simply terrible, not just because of the VA that is horrible, but her script is atrocious, she tries to manipulate Leon and she's not even subtle about it, she betrays Wesker on his face unlike the OG that tricked him, after her FBI disguise in RE2R doing an investigation in the middle of a Zombie Apocalypse where everyone including the military was trying to survive it seems like Capcom is trying to make her the worst spy ever. Can't wait for a remake of RE6 to see how they will butcher her even further. Salazar had lots of interaction with Leon, but now they are very minimal and he nearly has no role. If Sadler had a small role in the OG despite being the big baddie, in the remake he barely shows up. He also suffers from the didn't understand the OG. He clearly wants Leon dead in the Remake, but after Ashley gun jams he leaves Leon alive, why? Because in the OG Sadler tells Leon he will leave him alive since he will make him his bodyguard after the plaga takes over. Krauser was turned into a edgelord and sounds too young to the point that his interactions with Leon come off as comical. The clearly around my age Major Krauser and Rookie is freaking hilarious with those models where Krauser looks way older than Leon. The knife is busted as hell acting as free from jail card, so they added durability to try to balance it, so now you last resort weapon and way to save ammo needs to be used sparingly even more than your ranged weapons. The remake is a good game, but as a remake it suffers from a few issues the other remakes did, it is the best one, but then again it is based on one of the best games ever that influenced so many games, so yeah.

Both are good games but I still prefer the original. The remake felt a bit more boring, especially with the villains. It's not as memorable and makes it hard to replay. The wobbly gameplay also gives me motion sickness, I didn't have that problem with the OG or even past RE remakes

I must say I enjoy this drunken Scotsman. He's eloquent, funny, and seems to know his stuff. Maybe he could create a second channel called "The Critical Drinker," where he'd review movies. He could also host a show called Open Bar... And who knows - in a few year's time he could become a published author, release a movie, and even do a few mainstream interviews.

0:08 quit lying. Who could resist such amazing dialogue and delivery such is as presented in Survivor. "My friend, Leon S. Kennedy", as if everyone in real life pronounces full names when referring to their buddies! Then there's the commander patting Lott on the head and calling him a good boy like a dog. Best comedy game I've ever played.

It would probably be hard now to do a review of RE: Resistance being it multiplayer (small but loyal following) but would be neat to give a nod to. I always liked it and played the crap out of it when it was popular. It kept the classic RE feel while introducing a new way to experience RE and IMO is probably the only way you can have RE multiplayer style and still call it RE. Capcom tried and I think it is a shame that it didn't catch on.

Quick time events worked once and it was in the original re4. They made the cut scene feel important with a small amount of interaction. Every other time quick time is used it's just button mashing for usually no reason other than button mashing.

Also if you know anyone who is a voice actor you'll know that it was the director who fucked up Adas tone. She has done great in other things and even in this dlc she seems more cocky. Blame the director not her. Probably told her to play a detached agent and took the first takes they got.

Salazar still looks more like a golden girl. The original design should’ve been stepped up in details but kept mostly the same. But he’s still scary. Also, they had recordings of Ada’s original voice actress. They could’ve used that and kept the motion cap the same to match it. NaughtyDog didn’t have the motion capped actor for Tenzin in Uncharted 2 speak cuz they just made him move his mouth to match the Tibetan voice actor. Capcom could’ve tried something like that and spared the audience of listening to a new voice for Ada. But at least she wasn’t made intentionally ugly like the other attractive female characters that are being made ugly on purpose…

I think part of Resi 4's genius is that you get to a point in the game where you think "When did I start shooting Monks in a grand maze? Where the Hell am I? Where the Hell am I going?" and you don't care because it's all just chugging along at a great pace and every new area feels like a fresh challenge.
