It's insane that the steel version is as light as the G10 version. Rather shocked by that, I just got the black G10 and WOW, you are right, such a great blade. I'm also amazed by the blade's finish, how the back is rounded off in such a great fashion (so not for surivalists but who cares), makes it so elegant and nice to fondle! The bearings are just as smooth as the Ganzo G751 I have (and that is probably the best knife of 2017 for me and the bearing have additional washers inside). The only flaw I just noticed is that the thumb studs seem to be made of aluminum (or something as soft) and get scratched up easily by other stuff I happen to have in my pocket (this is only visible since they are blued and would not be a problem otherwise) Wow this is a long comment, but I'm hyped about this knife too ;) I wonder how the 12c27 will hold an edge, I have had mixed (if in general good) experience, and it's so hard to tell if it's the real deal. Most brand knifes with this steel are killer tho! Seems much better then 8cr13mov (and as rust resistant), softer then 440C in terms of edge retention but not by much, and very hard to damage or chip (Mora knives use this steel for the stainless versions). This all makes one hell of a good budget steel, and it can take a razor edge and mirror polish like no other (very fine gradation of the steel). Also (and this is important) very nice to the touch, if you know what I mean. Wow I'm writing a book, not a comment....
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the book, well at least one chapter. :) Did you notice the picture that I put in the video that shows how much steel they milled out of the handle slabs, they worked hard to keep it from becoming a heavy knife. I think the thumbstuds are the same material as newer blue anodized hardware that Ganso is using. I haven't had any of mine come off but just the use of my thumb rubbing on one of them has, now that I went back and took a close look at it, rubbed some of the colour off. My take on the 12C27 is that I think it is genuine, it has lasted quite well for me in my testing and it sharpened very much like my other knives with 12C27 too.
@olafkliemt11452 жыл бұрын
got my 910Plus today. machining and factory adjustment is just insanely good. 12C27 heat treatment is excellent (decent edge retention), blade centered, fall-shut, razor-sharp, no hotspots and and and. Sanrenmu really rocks. no wonder that Spyderco and others have their knives made by them.

Jake, I (like you) am also absolutely gushing about the Sanrenmu Land 910 series of knives. I own three. I have one question: In this video you said that this is the best budget knife of 2017. I agree. You also said, however, that you have some YStart knives that come close to being as good. I am just super curious as to which YStart knives you had in mind when you made that statement. If they come highly recommend from you, and if they even come close to what the 910s offer with regards to quality, I want to own them. So which YStart knives, specifically, were you thinking of when you said that they are high up there in the budget knife strata? And since this video is from last year, has there been any other knife (besides the Ystarts) that you'd include along with the 910 as the too budget folder of 2017 AND/OR 2018? Thanks! Sidenote: You said that you'll never own a Sebenza due to financial reasons. I feel the same way. I can never imagine having that kind of money to purchase that kind of knife. Nevertheless, I just want to say that if there were ever anyone who deserved one - it is YOU. I hope one day you either find the means to own one or that someone gives you a well-deserved gift. I wish I could buy two - one for me and one to give to you. Thanks so much for all that you do. You make this odd hobby of ours so much more enjoyable.

Well, there is the odd knife that I review that costs a bit more. I did one recently that is $100USD, but I only do an expensive knife like that a few times a year. (Most reviewers think $100 is the top of the budget range, but I think it is in the expensive range).
@cole30786 жыл бұрын
I have both knives. One from gearbest, and one from aliexpress. Paid around $15 each. They go for about $28 each on Amazon. The price to value ratio is through the roof on these. You get the quality of a $75-$80 knife for the price of a cheap gas station folder. The most knife for the money, hands down.

Hi Jake if you had to choose between the LAND 9103 and the Y - START JIN01 which would you buy? and why? Thanks and BTW I really enjoy your reviews.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
Most likely the LAND knives would be my choice. It's not a instantly clear answer. I would probably answer Sanrenmu 60% of the time and the JIN01 40% of the time. I like that I know exactly what steel I am getting with the Sanrenmu and it is a steel I am very happy with indeed. The other plus is that the Sanrenmu have a pocket clip. I do like the JIN01 a lot and it would be an even harder decision if they would have made it with a nice pocket clip. I sometimes am in a situation where I don't mind carrying a knife without a pocket clip but not always. A pocket clip is always a good thing because it is there when I want it and I can ignore it when I just want to drop the knife into a pocket or a backpack etc.

I ordered a 9103 right after watching this video. Just got it today, and I am THOROUGHLY impressed! You weren't kidding about the quality. Pretty awesome for $15! It's almost unbelievable how nice it is for that price -- fit and finish, milling on the inside of the scales, bearing pivot, rounded blade spine. Those processes all take extra time. You have to wonder how they aren't losing money on it. I'm interested to see how the steel performs. I'm familiar with Sandvik 14C28N, but I have no experience with this one. Sounds like it should be pretty decent though. It was a little bit stiff out of the box (easily fixed with some oil and opening and closing it) and the blue is already wearing off of the thumb stud. Not a big deal at all to me. Thanks again for the heads up on this one. Couldn't be happier. As a side note, I'm a lefty and was a little concerned I would have difficulty keeping my thumb off of the lock bar when deploying it. I've had absolutely no difficulty with this. Your mileage may vary.

I have the black, green, and silver models. These are sized just right. The blade length of 3 1/4 inches just feels so right in my hand. The Sebenzas are 3 5/8 and just under 3 inches, by their site, so not quite right. The CRKT Amicus is almost the same length, but wider and heavier. I find myself carrying one of the 910 line most of the time.

On the GearBest page is says they cannot ship to the United Kingdom. Also, the knife I was interested in was the all steel one (dark version) and they only seem to have the two colour versions with scales. uk.gearbest.com/pocket-knives-and-folding-knives/pp_606098.html?wid=25 This isn't a problem as I don't HAVE to have this particular knife. I think I would sooner choose another make and model that I can buy from a UK seller rather than have the hassle and waiting that comes with importing a knife.

First time viewer of your channel. Good review, you picked up a subscriber! I bought the Sanrenmu 7010 not long ago and really like it, excellent value for under $10. You've sold me on the 9103/9104 I will be picking one of those up soon. On a side note you can also pick these models up form FastTech. I've bought knives from both FastTech and GearBest, and personally I've found FastTech to be quicker and more reliable.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for commenting on your first video of mine, and thanks for subscribing. I no longer deal with FastTech. I have had too many bad experiences with them where they refuse to make things right. I won't go into it here except to say that their after sale service when things do go wrong is THE WORST that I have had from ANY online vendor. GearBest has always fixed any issues that came up, and that is true from before I became a reviewer on KZbin, back when I meant nothing to them other than as a regular customer.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
GearBest certainly is NOT perfect, but they are better when things go wrong than the other Chinese online vendors - in my experience. We all go by our own experiences, and I realize that other folks have other experiences.
@scottragan99927 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback on customer service. I haven't had a problem with either company yet, but that's good to know. I know recently I ordered a knife from GearBest on August 19th that I'm still waiting for, but a knife I ordered from FastTech on August 31st arrived yesterday. So the shipping speed is much better. But if FastTech isn't going to fix potential problems I can see how that would turn me away from them as well.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
It's hard to judge the speed from a few orders. I order several packages every week and have for a couple of years now, so I have hundreds of orders to use as data points. I found that the speed varies from order to order and that goes for all the Chinese vendors

If you want a good grease for ball bearing knives, Canadian tire sells white lithium grease in the auto section under their Permatex brand. I've used it on a jin02 and I could tighten the pivot down a ton and it was still buttery smooth (with no bladeplay at all).
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
I have tried several grease options and white lithium is good stuff indeed. What I am using now, at least until I run out is "Tetra Gun Grease" : amzn.to/2q4gw3C I bought some of this when I was in USA - it is a bit expensive here in Canada.

First of all, great reviews! I am going to order some ganzo at gearbest to sent to BC. You mention its best to order maximum 2 knife at a time to lower the chance of the package getting inspection. What would happen if they inspect the package ?
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
Even better than only ordering 2 or maybe 3 is to make sure you choose "CA Registered" as your way of having GearBest ship it to you. CBSA often denies knives entry into Canada - knives they call illegal, but all other police agencies are fine with. The law in Canada regarding knives is a full 2 sentences long, but CBSA's interpretation of it is many pages where they lay out all kinds of rules against many knives. If they deny entry to a knife then you are out of hope. They say there is an appeal process but NOBODY EVER wins an appeal against CBSA. on KZbin search for "Canadian Cutting Edge CBSA" and you will find a couple of videos I have done about CBSA

These are indeed excellent knives. Sanrenmu has had their shit together for a long time, and these 9100 series knives are just another example of the Chinese upping the bar to a new level of quality. Being Chris Reeve must be great....and suck....at the same time. His designs are so prolific, yet in being so those designs are among the most copied by other makers.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
I agree with ya. There are two sides to the knife copying issue. ( or more) While I hate clones - my definition is knives that lie about who the maker is by trying to trick the buyer into thinking they are getting a brand that is different than the actual maker. So while I hate clones, I do think that knives that are very similar to iconic knives don't really have much of a negative effect on the original maker. It draws attention to the original. I think most people who buy a copy are guys like me, guys who would never pay for the original article, or perhaps we might be inspired to save up for the original after we have experienced a good copy. I don't think that the folks who can readily afford a Sabenza decide not too and buy a copy instead - I just don't think it happens very often - those folks take pride in getting the original article. Just my perspective and opinion. I could be mistaken, but like everyone - I don't think I am wrong.
@paul_schuette7 жыл бұрын
I wonder if whatever patents Chris Reeve held for the Sebenza may have run out at this point. I'm not sure how long those last, but the Sebenza has been around for quite a while. Also (as you mentioned), with knives in such different price and materials categories, I honestly don't think Chris Reeve is too worried. I read on a watch forum one time (although, not sure about the validity of this) that a Rolex representative was asked for his opinion on Invicta's obvious "homage" to the Rolex Submariner. He simply said, "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery." Yeah, not overly concerned.

How do you flick this open? The thumb stud is extremely small and I can't manage to open this one handed no matter how hard I try.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
Are you left handed by any chance? In my right hand I just flick it open like any other folding knife it works wonderfully, and it worked wonderfully right out of the box. I have 4 of them now, I bought some spares for gifts and they all open just fine. BUT, in the left hand they don't open well because as you push with your thumb you also put pressure down on the lockbar and that keeps it from opening - this is true of a LOT of framelock knives.

I have been hearing that same complaint from a few others lately too. I have had 3 9014's and 2 9103's and they have all been fine. It is NEVER good that a person actually hurts themselves simply by opening a knife, that is not okay. Are you familiar with taking knives apart and adjusting the pivots? IF so, did that help at all? Please email me if you want to chat further about this because I often lose track of KZbin conversations. CanadianCuttingEdge AT gmail.com (if you do write, remind me of the whole issue please).

I'm no expert in taking knives apart but adjusting the pivots seems easy...maybe I'll try. It seems to me that the detent is way to strong. even pulling the blade out with my fingers is not all that easy.

Have both of these knives .i love them .when some one tries to tell me a sabenza is worth it .i tell them to turn the sabenza all but sideways and drop the blade .the 9104 and 9103 will drop with the slightest down hill angle . Took the 9104 with me to the eclipse totality zone in Oregon .i was camping and dropped it in fine silty dirt .the part that holds the bearings sort of seals the bearing .it was oiled .just brew it out and no grind . Im a user not a fan boy .this is a good knife .its not a copy its showing how a sabenza should have been made . This knife is far better than a sabenza . If there wasnt so much sabenza cult bull shit i would ha never found this knife . Found it on ebey not youtube . The sabenza is a very good $50.0 -$100.00 dollar knife . I would buy one for that much .but the price is a deal breaker .like tip down only pocket clip. I have the money to buy one .im not a collector and i would feel pretty foolish if i bought one ( to use like i use a knife ) ( break baton ) I do have a bunch of user knives .i carry 2 usually .1 sheeple knife and 1 large folding knife mostly the recon 1 spear point in xhp od handle .cant hardly leave home without it .the little sheeple knife is to use in a herd of sheeple so i dont start a sheeple stampeed

I am not sure if I believe that this knife is better than the Sabenza but I do know that is FAR FAR FAR better than the Sabenza for ME! (and you too, apparently). That is a great story about the fine silty sand - NICE!! The one thing I do like about the Sabenza is that they have even better steel options. For everything else I am super happy with the Sanrenmu, and well, to be honest, for EDC I think Sandvik steel is plenty good enough too. Better steel is better, but good enough steel is... well... good enough. and if you have good enough then you don't need "better"!

I have a theory about the LAND division of Sanrenmu, that it's now simply the 'training' division of Real Steel. To all but those with the most discriminating eye, these knives seem perfect, but between me and a friend, we've ordered over a half dozen of the 910/9104 and there's always been small problems. Definitely still spectacular products - I'm just speculating that the limited runs of these knives somehow correlate to some internal training program :-)
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
That is not an unreasonable speculation. My idea is that LAND is simply a model designation for their knives that are over 3 inches in the blade. Who knows maybe we are both partly right. In any case, they are darn good knives for very little money.
@nottoosuckyreviews52117 жыл бұрын
I'm probably reading too much into it, but I can't help imagining one of their senior designers every few years giving the new hires the challenge to 'make a Sebenza' ;-) Then there's the models that are physically the same or nearly the same between Sanrenmu and Real Steel. I wonder if you have any pair of these sibling products to compare... :-)

Funny how a knife can differ from it's 'family' :) I think my Talisman is smoother, but only if I keep the lock pressed (smoother bearings). But maybe the Land has got a heavier blade because of you let it close on its own than the Land is smoother. Needless to say that I like them both very much?

Been sitting on this concern since I got the 910+ to see if anyone else brought it up, but to no avail. I have a 9103 and a 910+. It seems like the butt of the blade makes only the tiniest bit of contact with the stop pin. My concern is that over a relatively short period of frequent use this connection could wear down to the point where the blade will just swing past the stop pin. Is my concern misguided?
@CanadianCuttingEdge6 жыл бұрын
That is a VERY GOOD question!!! I can see how you came to wonder about this. I have had 4 of these knives go through my hands (2 for me, 2 as gifts). I carry mine a fair but, but not as my genuinely EVERY day carry. I have gone back and checked both of mine. and the contact point between the blade and the pin is about 1mm down from the corner where the blade tang turns. In other words, it has 100% solid contact between the pin and the blade. I can READILY see how it LOOKS like it is precarious but the physics of the design is spot on. I have NEVER had a tang of any blade (in any folder) move even 1/4 of a mm in relation to where it contacts the stop pin. While the tolerances look like they could fail relatively easily I don't think there is any genuine risk of the failure you can envision. I believe this is a case of a design that didn't take PERCEPTION into consideration enough. It easily looks precarious.
@richardhogg87076 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Perception is definitely wonky here. I just envision flicking the blade and having it swing around and smack the back of my hand. I guess I'll continue to use the knives without worry! They really are very nice knives. I wish Sanrenmu would put some of these touches on the 7010 (Sandvik, bearings, maybe even some G10).
@CanadianCuttingEdge6 жыл бұрын
14C28N would be great on both the 910x and 7010 knives. The other main thing I would change on the 7010 is the pocket clip, make it at least a 2 way, or better a 4 ways clip.

The Sanrenmu has 1 thing in common with CRK, they have become known for their high quality. I love some of the Ganzo's also, but disassembly of them reveals poor quality hardware. Not so with the Sanrenmu knives...even the screws seem to be of high quality. The Ganzo's offer more variety in the EDC carry knives, especially in the 3+ inch knives, but the Sanrenmu fit and finish, and quality of hardware is in a different class than Ganzo in my opinion. Matter of a fact, Sanrenmu is at least on par with the Chinese built Spyderco knives. As a matter of fact, the materials used on the Sanrenmu might lag behind the USA made Spyderco...cheaper steel. The fit and finish of the Sanrenmu is as good as Spyderco USA in my opinion. None of my Sanrenmu knives have had any flaws that made it past quality control. The green G10 copies went up today on gearbest to $15.55, the blackwash and black G10 models are both $13.99 today. Prices seem to change constantly.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
I hear you with the Ganzo's, they used to have decent hardware but that went downhill right around the time they started doing the blue hardware on the Firebird line (in my experience anyway). Sanrenmu is the company that Spyderco hired to make their "Made in China" knives like that Tenacious etc. I checked again today and the Sanrenmu LAND 910+ in green is still $9.99, but you don't see it unless you go all the way to the item page, and not just search results pages. Sanrenmu is my favourite Chinese knife company these days. I liked Ganzo more for a little while, but that was before Firebird. I wish they would be a bit more original and not just G10 in 3 colours and CF on G10. those 4 options cover 95% of their knives, well they do have some wood. It's time to make some greater variety by them. I like Y-START a lot, but they don't have much volume yet, they need to expand. GearBest is definitely always changing their prices so if a price seems a bit high then just wait, there is a good chance it will come down.
@sarge12317 жыл бұрын
Yes...I always check prices on the item page...they only went up to 15.55 for 1 day before again dropping to 9.99.

well, i got the 9104 and 3 from gearbest. 12c27, holds an edge way better than i thought. i would dare to say, better than 14c28n.
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
14C28N is an updated version of 12C27 so it seems odd that your experience would be that way. BUT, it could be that the mfr who prepared the knife that you have in 14C28N may have done a poor job with heat-treatment. That brings up one of the challenges of evaluating knife steels. It's not just about the steel that the knife maker starts with. they could start with a GREAT steel but screw it up big time by doing a terrible heat treatment, and then another company (like Ganzo) can take a basic steel like 440C and because they have dialed in their heat treatment process they end up with some quite good cutting edges, better than one would usually expect from that steel. In any case. The Sandvik steels are better than their budget price might lead folks to believe.

@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
These are definitely Sabenza inspired, BIG TIME! There seem to be a lot of people who have lots of money to spend on expensive knives. I say let them buy the Sabenzas and other expensive knives, I am going to buy knives that cost a LOT less but are only a bit lower in quality. These 9103 and 9104 knives sure feel great and they cut great and that is the main thing in my mind. I don't need a big brand name for status, so Sanrenmu is good for me.

I saw after hard work frame went on 50 % heel of blade
@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what you are saying. Do you mean where lockup point? That can happen because if a person puts some hard pressure on the blade, on ANY frame lock or liner lock knife. What happens is that while cutting hard you actually flex the lock open farther than it normally sits and the lock bar moves to fill the gap that is created. I could do a video that explains how that happens better than I can explain it in words. But I am 100% convinced that this is not a problem with this knife design (but it may be a problem with your specific knife), it is something that happens to every frame lock and liner lock to one degree or another. Sanrenmu makes very great quality knives. Just so you know, I don't get any free knives from Sanrenmu, in fact they don't even answer my emails anymore, so I would tend to be upset with them more so than try to make them sound better than they are, and I am sure this isn't a design flaw of the knife. Every knife company makes the odd lemon, perhaps yours is one of those few.

@CanadianCuttingEdge7 жыл бұрын
I hear you. My personal position is that I am against anyone putting a brand on a knife that doesn't belong to them. If these knives had Sabenza on them or CR's logos I would be against them. I don't think that these knives effect Chris Reeve's bottom line at all, I think that consumers who buy this knife are not the same folks who would spend hundreds of dollars on the Chris Reeve knives. It's two different demographics of knife collectors. Though there are many knife collectors that start with budget stuff like Sanrenmu and work their way up to Chris Reeve and Spyderco and Zero Tolerance... When i did an honest evaluation I find that every knife has copied certain elements of some other knife, it's just the way it is, and that goes for pretty much all products. So the question is where do I draw the line? how much copying is okay and how much is too much? I asked my self those questions and came up with drawing the line for myself at the logos. I am against anyone saying that their knife is a brand name knife when it is a knock off. In this case Sanrenmu clearly puts their brand on the knives. Nobody who can read will think that they are getting a Sabenza. Not like most of the knives on eBay and many other vendors where they are not only knock offs but they are actually clones - pretending to be what they are not - that I am against. I respect guys who draw the line for themselves in a different place.

Clone definition from Merriam-Webster: "one that appears to be a copy of an original form". Well, this is a clone. They don't infinge on copyright stuff by putting CR on it, but its a clone with their own name on it just the same, IMHO.
@CanadianCuttingEdge4 жыл бұрын
Webster is using clone and copy as synonyms - not very helpful in the context of these knife reviews. On CCE you will consistently hear me use the terms in the following way and I will never change the use. I make my use of the terminology in question clear so that people can watch any video of mine and they will always get the words used the same way. CLONE: To me a knife clone is one where the maker tries to trick the consumer that the item is by one company when it is not by them at all. COPY: In my use a copy is a knife that may look a lot like another knife but it doesn't use the brand names or model names of the original.
@repro77804 жыл бұрын
@@CanadianCuttingEdge blog.knife-depot.com/never-buy-counterfeit-knives/ A Note on Terminology Clones, knockoffs, counterfeits, homages. What’s the difference? All of these terms are typically used to mean one of two things. A knife passed off as the real thing. A counterfeit knife is one that looks exactly like the real thing - with branding, all the design elements, and even packaging information - but is not from the actual company. A knife that steals designs from another model. If it looks like a Spyderco, functions like a Spyderco, but is called an Arachnidco, it’s a stolen design. It may not have the branding of the original but it may be a heavily borrowed design. This is not necessarily a counterfeit knife, but the effects are the same.
