I'm just a closet CoCo nut from back in the day. Stumbled across this video while looking for CoCoSDC (which I have) things (I've still got my original CoCo3 all decked out from back in the day!). Had to leave a comment because I love your 'Space Debris' background music in this video. Most excellent choice of music! :)

Regarding the 16k cartridge size limit, there is another modern cartridge that allows loading multiple cartridges of up to 256k in size totaling up to 8Mb, the CoCo Flash. It does not do what the CoCo SDC does with disk emulation though, it specializes in cartridge images. www.go4retro.com/products/cocoflash/

Time code 7:02: "The CoCo SDC doesn't solve one important issue. I want to try to preserve the disks that came with my CoCo." The CoCo SDC does allow preservation of real CoCo disks when you have a Multi-Pak and a working floppy disk controller. The CoCo SDC software allows you to turn off the emulation on a disk by disk basis. Thus allowing you to use DECB's BACKUP command to make an image of a disk. This is described in the manual: www.colorcomputerarchive.com/coco/Documents/Manuals/Hardware/CoCo%20SDC%20User%20Guide%20%28Darren%20Atkinson%29.pdf

AWESOME. Next step: get a working floppy controller.

To see if an Atari can read a floppy, unless it's a boot floppy, you must boot a compatible DOS (AKA System) disk first.

Regarding those mystery disks, the media is identified as double density soft sectored 40 track. They are dated 1984. I think they may be for a CP/M system or a Tandy TRS-80 model 1, 3, or 4.

Where do I get that UTILITY you used to READ the disks from the PC??? Namely "CoCoDiskUtility"??? Do you have a LINK???

@@JoesComputerMuseum That link is dead now. The guy lives in Venezuela. The 4shared host he points to from his blog seems to just be a scam site now. Do you have another link to the util? Or maybe submit the zip file to www.colorcomputerarchive.com/ for hosting? Thanks! EDIT: looks like someone already uploaded it. :) FYI for anyone else looking for it look in www.colorcomputerarchive.com/coco/Utilities/

Started following after I picked up a coco 2 the day your first coco video dropped, good to follow along and get ideas! I lucked out with a pristine Korean 64k upgraded to extended basic 1.1 / 1.3. I'm still hunting for a proper crt and of course some games and peripherals. Almost disappointing I wont have to dig around the machine like my Mac Se imgur.com/a/Ule1x

Hello, very interesting, I would like to manually translate this video into Spanish, I have already done it several times for 8bit guy but youtube does not let me, apparently you must authorize the translation by the community to be able to translate it, I hope I can afford to do it, and Thank you very much for the video.

Hello, very interesting, but with another disk drive if it works, for example with a floppy drive of 360 kb of PC if everything works. Of course the CoCo SDC is better

@@JoesComputerMuseum The utility you were using should have been able to image the disks if they were OS-9 format.

If it's a single-sided drive you should use dskini0 (zero).
@JoesComputerMuseum
@JoesComputerMuseum 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on how the drive is jumpered, does it not? In my particular case, dskini0 doesn't cause the heads to move, and gives the same result regardless of the drive I use. Formatting a disk using a PC with the right tool and trying to DIR the disk specifying any drive number also gives the same: IO Error.
@holycowmanheck
@holycowmanheck 6 жыл бұрын
Just making sure. The default is drive zero. I hope you still keep trying to get it to work, or try a newer controller and drive. I still like having my disk drive around, even if I don't use it. You have some other videos I think I'll enjoy... so. SUBSCRIBED!

Welcome to the nerd army! Yeah, what you don't see in this video is the literal weeks of nights after work I mucked about with the thing. Trust me, I tried everything. Magnetic media is probably still in the CoCo's future, but I'm not sure when. So many machines, so little time!
