I have a Thermapen MK4 that's 9 years old. I don't think I have ever changed the batteries. I have dropped it countless times and it still works like a champ. Looks like both the units you tested are great thermometers. I guess price point would be the main consideration for me. Thanks for the video. Very informative.

I have a mk4 that's several years old that I used a handful of times and babied. I'm back in house with it now and starting to cook and the pen is basically dead... It's unusable due some evidently well known issue with the rotary joint. You dont find the well known issues until you specifically search for them. Need a new thermometer and really don't want to get a one due to the garbage the mk4 turned out to be tough not sure there is a good enough alternative Hope the cover for the mk4 will fit the one we'll enough if that's the way I go as certainly don't want to pay as much as many instant read thermometers for another cover for the one.

​​@@martycranfordI purchased the smoke the mk4 and a few other thermoworks at the same time then I left them at my house to stay with my grandparents taking care of them full time cooking all their meals until they died Now I am back In my home with my dead mk So maybe shut the ____ up and not be a donkey. Unless you're a serious professional chef I guarantee I'm a better cook than you Smoke x2 Chefalarm X2 Pop x3 Mk4 x1 Those are my thermoworks I also have multiple Meater Idevices Weber igrill and minis And more.

I have the original Thermapen and love it. I also have an Alpha Grillers one - which I rarely use. Lighting might be a good choice as a backup unit.

Thanks for investing in a Lightning and for taking time to produce this very-informative review and comparison! On the Lightning, once you change the measurement to Fahrenheit does it retain that setting on subsequent power ups?

A correction to this video: Thermapen ONE does NOT have a 10-minute power-off feature. As described in the video, it DOES have a configurable auto-off feature between 10-180 seconds, and this feature can be turned off so the unit never goes to sleep. The confusion stems from the fact that, in the past, some Thermapen models had a 10-minute auto-off feature. To truly power down both Lightning and Thermapen ONE, you need to swing the probe into the closed position. Hope this clears things up!

Still rocking the original Thermoworks, Thermopen. I love it. I would like to upgrade to the Thermopen One, but I can’t justify buying a new instaread thermometer when mine still works, and it is better than the majority of the instaread thermometers on the market, dispite being two generations old. My mother-in-law wanted an instaread thermometer, as she was using a terrible one for years. It took forever to read the temp, and it was questionable if it was accurate. I bought her the Thermopen One for Christmas BEFORE she said she would like a new instant read thermometer. I know she’s going to love it!

You made a rookie mistake...you're supposed to buy YOURSELF a new Thermapen and GIFT the old one to your MIL. I've been doing this for years, gifting older models to friends and family and always buying myself the latest, greatest version. :D

As of 12/10/22, pricing of Lightning is confusing. On one part of the ThermoPro website, it's listed for $99.99. On another page, it's listed for $79.99. On Amazon, it's $69.95. And on yet another page on ThermoPro's site, there's still a link to the deeply discounted $48.96 price. The part that says, "Stock Selling Fast 86 Units Left" is bogus, that's the same as it was when I placed my order on December 6. This is the link got me the $48.96 price using Prime for free delivery + sales tax. The discount code that drops the price to $48.96 occurs when you add the item to your cart: amzn.to/3W4nuEA I don't imagine this link will be valid for long.

How do you configure the decimal place in the display?

For Lightning, there are no instructions in the manual on how to turn on/off the decimal place, so I have to conclude it's not user configurable. For Thermapen ONE, it's configurable using the two buttons inside the battery compartment.

Yes, they increased the warranty period shortly after I published my video. I noted this change at the top of the Comments area.
