Review: What's so good about the...SEAT Ateca?

The Ateca is the long overdue crossover SUV from SEAT. It's also very closely related to both the SEAT Leon and the Volkswagen Tiguan - two excellent cars, in their own ways

The virtual pedal works when you wave you foot beneath the rear bumper, and then step back. As you yourself demonstrated in the end. It won't open if you stand next to it, so it doesn't bump you. Ah, reviewers...

Can you explain why this car won't pull away at junctions? Like if it's dependant upon what transmission your using or if it's a technology based issue...?

It's specific to this engine and gearbox, Emma, and the way the accelerator pedal is calibrated. It just doesn't do much unless you mash it to the floor. That combined with a bit of turbo lag makes it feel sluggish and frustrating when pulling away at roundabouts etc.

I hired a Seat Ibiza dsg. Agree it tries to keep revs low. Driving up a mountain road at 40 it picks 6th gear and 1200rpm, in a 1 litre turbo with 4 adults, struggles a bit when it gets steeper, suddenly kicks down to 3rd and suddenly rapidly accelerate and have to back off before finally picks 4th which should have chosen. Worst thing though is slow speed manoeuvres, you can have 5mph or stopped but nothing in between as can't hold clutch just above bite. Peeping and creeping is hard work!

Thanks for your reply. I wanted to know, (1), if this is actually a serious problem, or something you would get used to very quickly, and (2) if this affects the 1.4 litre petrol model as well, or only the diesel that you are testing.

It's a problem only for this combination of engine and gearbox. You will get used to it, but when this is the top-of-the-range, quickest Ateca (190PS TDI with DSG), you'd expect it not to feel sluggish, which it does because of the way the accelerator has been calibrated. The petrol model is much better, as is anything with a manual gearbox. Does this issue ruin the car? No. But the Ateca is otherwise brilliant, so it's a shame that something so simple hinders the enjoyment. Junctions can be a nightmare because of it, which was the point of the skit in the review. Hope that helps.

Terrible reviewer. Losing a lot of respect for Honest John website these days. This presenter was awful. He acts like his job is just a joke, he dresses like he's homeless and you can't understand most of what he says. It seems that if you want to research a car properly, you're better off watching the video reviews from Carbuyer or Carwow. The Telegraph do some good ones sometimes as well. This HJ effort was abysmal, don't understand how anyone would sign this off as quality motoring journalism.
