Did not like yellow ocher until I painted a horse with sunlight hair where i used yellow ocher. This changed everything for me. White nights yellow ocher gives the painting this sunlight glow that no other color can replicate. I cannot see my pallet without it now. It is weak, but it is magic! The raw sienna is not the same thing, it is dull in comlarison. You can mix yellow ocher however with raw sienna as long as you have aureolin yellow. I do see why white nights kept yellow ocher though and happy they did. Try it for sunlight and you will see what i mean!

My issue is with "Ochre Light", not Yellow Ochre. Ochre Light and Raw Sienna are both made using PY43. Yellow Ochre is not included in the metal box of 35 so I don't have it. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Lovely review! Thanks for telling us about the new sets from white nights, i was under the impression that the only difference was the tin case instead of the plastic. These are my favorite watercolors and I saw this review just in time! Can't wait to see more videos ❤️ Edit: THANK YOU for saying they're for painters of any level. A lot of reviewers tend to say they're for students or for starting out with professional paint. I've been painting for years and have tried a lot of brands and they're still my favorite

So White Nights announced about a week ago that they are releasing a PV23 Dioxazine violet. Haven't seen it for sale on Jackson's yet, but it is coming. And a Mars Black as well.

As someone who has only been painting for 18 months, I love White Nights because they give me color payoff at a great price and aren't so precious that I'm aftraid to use them. I do love that original hooker's green even though it's fugitive. I am scraping the sides of the pan of that one and wish I could get another. I agree with you that cobalt and cerulean are weak, and that anemic light ochre is basically an insult. Thank you for the reminder about adding oxgall to the water. I'm going to finally do that. These do play nice with QOR, when I'm feeling brave enough to bring out my QOR mixing set.

The White Nights Urban Sketcher set interests me, too. And I love how they have such an economy of space in their tins!

BTW, the tin fits 35 full pans + 5 half pans (one per each row). Also, you are wrong about the Ochre Light. There are many versions of the same pigments (PR101 comes in Red, Orange, Brown transparent & opaque forms as an example), and this lighter version of PY43 s actually present in other brands too as "transparent yellow oxide", "raw sienna" or "'french ochre", "ochre light", etc. The name actually doesn't matter and has nothing to do with pigment concentration, it's meant to be a different lighter shade. I know it's not for everyone, but for artists painting portraits I highly recommend it as a base single pigment colour for flesh tones. It's much better than multi-pigmented PW4/6 flesh tone alts, because it's luminous & transparent. My everyday palette only has 12 colours in it and this one is a must. Sadly it's a highly underrated and misunderstood colour.

Opinions cannot be wrong or right. I continue to dislike ochre light, and I prefer to use PR206 for my portrait skin tone base color.
@evalikesred
@evalikesred 2 жыл бұрын
@@SarahBaileyArts LOL, yeah, I agree about everyone being entitled to their opinion, especially regarding artistic choices. It was more of a jokey "you are wrong" except for the statement of PY43 being a double with less pigment, same pigments can have different qualities. But not everything comes across as meant on the interwebs. My point was just that it has a place in some artists' palettes precisely for the qualities others don't like it for. If one does portraits, give this pigment a chance, it works wonders.
@evalikesred
@evalikesred 2 жыл бұрын
@@SarahBaileyArts P.S. I don't think I've come across a PR206, what brand are you using? Just based on the name it sounds like a red pigment.
@SarahBaileyArts
@SarahBaileyArts 2 жыл бұрын
@@evalikesred OK ok, that was a really nice response to a snarky reply, I apologize, clearly having a bad day. Thanks for being cool. PR206 is commonly called Red Madder, or Roman Szmal calls it Quin Maroon, it's also DS quin burnt scarlet and I have used DS deep scarlet interchangeably (PR175). It's also called (very confusingly) Quin burnt orange by QoR, and PO48 is quin deep gold. Sigh. I started using it because in light washes it's a lovely transparent skin shade that gives that glowy translucence with a red/pink undertone that's so hard to get in watercolor sometimes. I generally avoid colors with any opacity or granulation for portraits but that's totally just my preference. I definitely don't have any problem with people wanting to use WN, it's just overall not my favorite and I think if they're going to put out a paint it should be pigmented to at least a standard level so that the painter can choose to dilute it rather than be forced, or less educated painters will end up using a gummy paint. It just bugs me because you can feel the binder in it even when not in masstone use.
@evalikesred
@evalikesred 2 жыл бұрын
@@SarahBaileyArts No worries & no offence taken 😊I do hope your day improves. Thanks for sharing your watercolours' experience. Interesting... I have some of the pigments you mention, I never used them in portraits as base colours for skin tones though. I should try, I love PO48 in particular.. Initially i hated that light ochre colour in a set too, thought it was useless and always substituted it with a more potent Raw Sienna. And now that Ochre Light is my fave for Caucasian skin, it's so luminescent, just add either Quin Red or Quin Rose for a warm/cool tone & you are done, can't go wrong. I use multiple brands myself, so I'm not promoting WN at any rate. Lawd knows they have issues with some colours and I know this Ochre Light is particular pet peeve for some artists, but I've tried alts from other brands too. It's just what the can says... One either has a use for it or doesn't.

I adore White Nights tins and pans. They're just -chef's kiss- and I'm honestly kind of impressed that I haven't given in and just bought one of each already 😂 I like the paints just fine, but I do agree that they flow less than a lot of Western European paints. I generally find their earth colours weak and disappointing, but otherwise I think they're a perfectly fine brand - especially considering the price! The quality to price ratio is quite excellent.

i agree with the lovely lilac colour~ it was what drew me to it too. i still have yet to get any because i'd have to order it from abroad and shipping is so expensive for white nights. oh! i'm glad you like the PG8 too! i tested the lightfastness (in masstone) and it didn't fade at all. i might have to try again with a light wash. i also wonder why White Nights haven't switched to using PV23 yet. i mean, when they're adding colours to their range and even switching pigment sources (ex. PB60) they should really look into getting the PV23. is it an expensive pigment? i know Rembrandt has PV23 in their series 3 range and that's on par with the other expensive cobalt pigments.
@SarahBaileyArts
@SarahBaileyArts 3 жыл бұрын
PV23 isn't expensive at all, I have no idea why they don't include it, maybe it's difficult to source in Russia? I actually don't know your location but if you're in the US I just listed this set on Ebay at a discount, barely used. I can't believe PG8 didn't fade, that's fantastic news!!!

The amount of reds is really a bit much. Too bad that they can’t improve their earth tones better and the ultramarine fades and the cobalt blue is iffie. Aurelian turns brown. They could change the weak ochre for a nickel azo yellow to make the sunsets pop. Well maybe they don’t have the access that other countries have for certain pigments. It was my second set. I bought the 36 set and replaced 10 of them. Oh well.

Thanks for this thorough review :) I love the look of this tin and you can buy it separately! - I was wondering if you have you tried to put other brand full pans in here? I recently put together a mixed palette, but the tin is pretty crappy and I would love to replace it with a better quality one - I have a mix of Roman Szmal and hand-poured full pans as well as white nights so I am not sure if they will fit? Thanks!
@SarahBaileyArts
@SarahBaileyArts 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, other brands full pans will fit, but you may not be able to get as many in each row because WN pans are not quite as wide as other brands. Keep in mind this tin is the same quality as every other tin out there (Meeden, for example). It's just that the insert has an additional row. Having said that, it's an excellent option if you want to use an insert but want room to hold more pans.
@jannahlyon
@jannahlyon 2 жыл бұрын
@@SarahBaileyArts thanks so much for the info! I got one off Amazon and the tin itself was OK but the metal rows were horrible, all bent and put in crooked, totally unusable so I am hoping this WN one will at least be better than that :)

@SarahBaileyArts 2 жыл бұрын
@@jannahlyon Oh yes definitely, it should be great compared to that! And just in case you're not aware, make sure you bend the arms in and snap your pans into place, they're meant to be bent in BEFORE you insert your pans order to hold your pans securely. :) Sometimes people don't know that so just making sure you know.

@SarahBaileyArts
@SarahBaileyArts 3 жыл бұрын
Yes they do! The White nights pans are shorter, but the width is the same as other pans, give or take. So you can fit other pans into the tin but you might only get six per row on the top and bottom rows instead of seven.

7 Roman Szmal's whole pans fit tightly in the row and his pans are bigger (longer) than White Nights. If Szmal's pans fit then any other brand will fit, because he have standard pans.
