I used to drink there in 1965 and after . Wondfull pub then, used to sit in the barrel room and the landlord used to come out and sit with the drinkers in those days on a winters night only maybe 6 or 8 of us. Happy memories.

Old pubs that have a traditonal fireplace are amazing and feel cozy on winter days. The food looks really nice. I wouldn't mind paying higher price for a memorable meal once in a while. Glad it isn't a tourist trap.

I had a bit of a thing about Sausage ,mash and onion gravy back in the 90's and went down to England for a fishing holiday for two weeks . We ate out every night and I had the same meal in 14 different places from Norfolk to London to Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Herefordshire . I dont remember all of them now but I still recall that the worst was in North London , but the best was in Hay-on-Wye. I still remember it clearly and its serving of Home baked brown bread and butter on the side . A totally pointless story as I guess most or all the establishments are now gone but hope you tolerated reading haha

I would pay the high prices to ensure the survival of a historic pub. It's also expensive these days to run older establishments as their heating and electricity bills tend to be higher than newer buildings.

I don't want to know how much it costs to heat a place like that for an English winter. I live in Richmond, Va., in a 1950's-era house with a gas-fired boiler system, and during bad Januaries and Februaries the gas part of the utilities can threaten $400.

My electric is £250 per month and gas £350 per month that's with underfloor heating and a huge gas boiler although it's a large house it's still expensive

Gary. The sausage did look a bit undercooked to me but will take your word on it being cooked through because you enjoyed the taste so much. The ingredients a looked really good but let down by the portion size of the mash. I know you got what you said was on the tin but the plate looked to lack a bit of greenery and think something like spring cabbage would be a welcome addition. You think it was a bit on the pricey side and I would agree but not overly so. I think £16 would be a reasonably price but with larger portion of mash. Overall I think I would score it 8/10.

You could almost smell the old age of the place, the history coming out of those walls. That menu was amazing, did I see correctly a sharing meal for £80? How many share? That bangers & mash did look good, as you said a bit tight on the mash and some fresh garden peas wouldn't of gone a miss, I love thick onion gravy and it did look good, plenty of meat in the sausage with no unwanted grease oozing out! Because of the surroundings and the good cooking you can see where they get their prices from, but as it's all in house they must save on a number of things, so I would think a fairer price would be around £13.95, but as a one off and you've just won a tenner on the lottery, I'd give it a go! Well filmed and voiced review as usual!

Hello Gary, you are finding such beautiful establishment's, the food could almost be an afterthought, almost 😊 Simple, done well is the strength of British catering ❤ whilst you were eating CTP could have had a wandered about the place showing his ability (😮) Unless the sight of the drooling, dripping, dribbling no longer has an effect on you? I'm putting myself in CTP's shoes 😂That's an old fashioned rib sticker meal 🍴 😊 Plump Porkiers,Silky Mashed Potatoes, Onion Gravy. My opinion, no need for chopped chives as garnish. A great looking plate of food. Over 900yrs old,we accept that prices will have gone 👆, but still a bit pricey? Maybe a 3rd sausage or something ,crusty bread&butter? Well worth a visit if only to view the place. Safe travelling, and to the next one, onwards Allan&Family ❤😊

My favourite Bangers and Mash were made by me, and predictably the more expensive sausage always makes for a better meal. The longer and lower you cook the sausage gives more flavour and a dark brown sticky/sweet finish. Yours didn't look sticky to me, maybe something the Restaurant could take into account. Long and Low is where it's at. I've heard some people use a defuser to elongate the cooking time, a step too fat for me but for the price you paid...

Hi again Gary "Old Son". When I saw the price of the food; I had an almighty Myocardial Infarct!. The wife had to start up the defibrillator again. That pub; nice as it may be, is *NOT* for Scotsmen. The Pork sausages look yummo but they should have been called *SODDING GOLD PLATED BANGERS & MASH* BTW mate, the best sausages I have ever tasted are the ones I make here at home. I have my own sausage mincer and sausage stuffer, and after tasting the butcher's and supermarket sausages; I prefer my own. Frequently, depending on the type of protein I use; I give it a wee dram of the finest Islay 17 year old Scotch. and for other recipes I use VSOP Cognac, and sometimes a good brandy. I can never chose a better way of getting drunk (LOL) but find that cooking burns off the alcohol, but leaves a beautiful taste in the mouth. BTW mate; Evelyn and I had a wonderful 52 Wedding Anniversary. We went out to lunch and I ordered a nice sirloin steak. The waiter asked my how I would like it done and i replIed: *"BRING IT UP TO BODY TEMPERATURE"* The poor bloke looked at me as said "PARDON?" I said that I wanted blood oozing onto my plate. The poor sod just shook his head and walked away. I could not help but laugh. Mate; where is that pub you are having lunch at? Is that in Buckinghamshire? Well enjoy your eighteen quid Opps I mean sodding sausages mate. BTW mate; that beer does not look cold! 😭 PS. I have been to the *YE OLDE FIGHTING COCKS at St. ALBANS* From memory there were lakes nearby. There were old ruins which I believe Queen BOUDICA punched the life out of when she took on the Romans. Now there was a woman after my own heart. She must have been Scots! :))))

Hello Angus! How have you been? Was starting to get worried. I really should write a letter of apology to your wife for the amount of times she has to go and fetch your defibrillator. I completely understand why you wouldn't like the pub haha. Ah I do love a nice rare steak as well so I'm in agreement with you on that one and congratulations on your anniversary. Yes, it's in Buckinghamshire. I will add that pub to the list as I do want to go! Thanks mate.

Its expensive to run a restaurant and you pay for ambience and the experience. The food looked incredible. Compared to mayfair, price not that bad. Good work ! See you in london one day!

I only found your channel recently Gary. I’m really enjoying it thank you. Unfortunately I’m on a budget and couldn’t pay that much for a meal for one. I love b&m and make it regularly for myself and my 2 daughters costing around €2.50 per portion. (I’m from Ireland) and that’s only because I get 6 premium sausages. Your plate of food looked lovely. However, to me it looked like a bowl of onion gravy with a child’s portion of mash which you couldn’t really see and 2 fine sausages on top. As you were eating, especially the combo bites you struggled to get the mash on cause it simply dropped off being so little and under a puddle of gravy. Great review though and I’m going on the hunt for more of your videos. 👍

Hello Philip. Firstly, thank you for commenting and subscribing! I will agree with you that the portion of the mash wasn't great and therefore I had to mark it down. Thank you very much and hello to Ireland (I'm half Irish myself)!

OMG the royal standard. Did i mention it in a previous post? I think maybe i did along with the saracens head, lol. Before moving to Sarf London back in 84 I lived just behind the red loin by the cricket club. As a 6/7 year old i used to go off up the lanes around there and penn for miles and miles on my push bike. It used to be the defacto winter pub by the fire side with a pint of real ale type place. It can also sometimes be a nightmare tourist trap. The size of their car park ready to accommodate is a little scary in scale lol.

Absolutely love Beaconsfield. Beautiful village and one of my favourites in England. Food looked good and I believe you get what you pay for. Homemade sausages - where do you get them nowadays? Solid nine out of ten from me!

I’ve been to that pub, food, beer and atmosphere was excellent. Yes, it’s expensive, but worth it, especially for a treat now and then.

Gary, I think that was a fair mark overall. Nice to see no service charge added which sort of makes up for the somewhat pricier meal. I would be interested to know whether the sausages were coarse-cut or not, they looked rather coarse-cut in the video. I am not a fan of coarse sausages and that would make all the difference to me as to whether I would order this meal or not. The gravy did look really excellent, and as you mentioned, a little extra mash would not have gone amiss as it's quite cheap and relatively easy to produce and would have added to a meal of better value. Great review nevertheless, keep them coming, please.

That looked sensational, and though at the higher end of the price bracket, I'd say it was worth it! I would pay that for a good, hearty meal! Bangers and mash are on the menu tonight for us! We were going to have them last night, but had a visitor so a change in the menu was made! I hope my mash turns out as good as that looked! And yes, there'll be onion gravy! I will also be adding broad beans (from our own garden) and carrots, as we do love our veggies! The sausages we get are country pork, made locally by an award winning artisinal butcher - they work out at around $4 NZ per banger, so not cheap, but very much worth it! (I cook 4, but only eat one while hubby has 2, saving my second for breakfast tomorrow! A good excuse for an egg and sausage sandwich!)

I’m going through all your reviews I haven’t seen so apologies for the late comment , that sausage and mash looked incredible but having looked at the menu I’d have gone for the steak and kidney pudding and what a fabulous looking pub , great review as usual my friend 👍

Those sausages look undercooked to me , a few minutes more on the grill is always safer . But it looks the business.

Fair enough George. They were ever so slightly pink but I don't usually mind that. Thanks mate.

I must visit that pub one day . I agree with your opinion , Gary .. £ 19-00 for bangers and mash is a bit too expensive and could have had twice that amount of mash to soak up the gravy . The menu looked good , Gary . How about trying the steak pudding next time . 👍😍

I will do next time Jim. Very pricy but excellent food.

Looking at the hammered beam ceilings, I'm guessing it's probably a listed building and costs more than most pubs to maintain, hence the high prices. You didn't mention the price of the beer, and I'm guessing that wasn't cheap either. Like a few other people in the comments, I think an extra vegetable would have been fair, although the plate looked very big so maybe there was more than met the eye. Great review, Gary.
@GaryEats Жыл бұрын
I agree. I think to justify the price, it needed a little extra. Thanks for watching!

We went there a few months back. Great atmosphere and architecture. But they did use that to up the prices in my opinion. And you should have tried the ice cream. I kid you not. It came with a teaspoon and I swear they used it to scoop it out. Smallest scoops I’ve ever had.

That is very disappointing to hear, it is located in a very affluent area but I agree the prices are a bit steep Mark
