Speaking as someone born in the early 60s, and growing up in middle class, small town United States, most women had a fairly simple makeup routine. We hicks were not stupid, however, and did have just as much access to high fashion styles from television, the movies, McCall's and Seventeen. Professional makeup artists had a lot more options, but the general public typically didn't have access to those resources. Of course, what part of the 60s and the woman's age made a huge difference in how makeup was applied. More mature women tended to carry more makeup styles from the late 50s... think Jackie Kennedy. Heavier eye makeup, darker lipstick, and generally paler faces with a more matte powdery finish. For the younger crowd who came of age in the mid to late 60s, foundation was indeed normal and Cover Girl Clean Makeup by Noxell was a standard in the US. No contouring, no highlighting, very little concealer (blemishes only). Foundation could be followed by very light powder, but younger women tried to avoid it. Translucent powders like we have today weren't a thing. You picked your powder color based on your foundation color. The idea was a fresher, cleaner, dewier look than our parent's generation. (This was followed up in the early 70s with the "no makeup" makeup look.) Blush was worn very lightly from the apple of the cheek all the way to the temple. (We didn't have "bronzer" as we have today. Bronzer would have referred to the staining creams you could get to mimic a tan over the parts of your body that showed.) Tinted blush gel was very popular. The dark teal eye color worn in the reviewed video would not have been a thing. I honestly don't recall there being eye shadows colors much available beyond the basic pale blue, green and browns. Probably some variations of lavenders and pinks. If worn at all, colors were most always applied monolithically and only to the lid... there wasn't this complicated color and shade difference between all parts of the eyelid in the general population. Perhaps for some in professionally applied instances. Eyebrows were still being carefully plucked and shaped as in the 50s, though not quite as thinly. Using makeup on the eyebrows wasn't done by the younger crowd... only old ladies who overplucked their eyebrows, or wanted dramatically shaped brows did that. (Think Joan Crawford or Agnes Moorehead.) Eyeliner also was toned down somewhat by the younger generation. No dramatic wings... that was an older woman thing. But heavy mascara on the upper and lower lashes was desirable. Lips were either nude, natural or very pale, and were slightly glossy. Matt lipstick really wasn't a thing that I recall. And neither was lip liner; that was for older ladies who still wore dark lipstick and needed to control color bleed. Some took to wearing lipstick that was much paler than natural... up to and including white. It was horrible and thankfully did not last long. That was pretty much it for makeup.

You got most of it right. However, if you were born in the early 60s, you must have done some research. That would make you no more than or 10 in 1969. The biggest oversight is Jackie Kennedy. JFK became president in 1961. She would have been 32 when she became First Lady. So, she was a style icon of the 1960s. She had style, as opposed to being a trend follower. Women young and old followed her if they wanted to look elegant. (Can someone comment on whether she influenced Europe? She did travel a lot and was a popular public figure.) Pale lip color, wild eye shadow, and micro-mini skirts did have a run in the mid 1960s. That's when Twiggy came on the scene in 1966 at the age of 18. It was 1966 before the Carnaby Street look hit the US. Maybe someone can post about its affect on Europe. When did it become more than just a London influence? This is so much fun!

Thank you so much for sharing, the vintage community really appreciates hearing personal experiences about make-up and fashion, etc. I hope this is not invasive, but what kind of bras do you remember girls wearing at the time? Bullet bras, less pointy bras, or no bra at all? In the 70s, when my mother was around 13 which would have been in 1976, she recalls just wearing a tank top under her clothes, being kind of a thin build. I've also heard older ladies in Sweden where I live saying they wore almost like laced bodices as bras. Thank you in advance for your reply! I hope that your day/night is going well. :)

Modern girl who wore a flip (an actual early 60s flip) for a number of years: yes, you need to cut your hair a certain way to make it work. For me, I had an ailine bob which made the front part of my hair significantly longer than the back. The front pieces naturally flipped out, giving me that 60s look without having to try. As soon as my hair grew down to my shoulders, however, it was almost impossible to achieve that look without blow-drying and using the proper brush. And once my hair grew passed my shoulders, it was basically impossible unless I really went out of my way. So, I can confirm that your hair does have to be cut a certain way for a flip to actually work. Brittani's hair is obviously just too long and not cut the right way to pull off a flip.
@graceandkelly7031
@graceandkelly7031 3 жыл бұрын
Question! How do you get volume for the flip? Whenever i see a movie or tv show try to recreate the 60s flip its always very flat but when i see old pictures from the 60s the women's hair is always so volumized like they're wearing a big helmet. Is it the haircut that gives volume?

@@graceandkelly7031 you have to tease it a lot to get the level of volume you see in old photos. You get some from the cut but not nearly as much as you need for the vintage style. The cut will make your hair flip up and usually there’s some layers at the crown to give some volume so it looks quite cute if it’s not styled, it’s much softer and almost looks a bit more 1990s.

What I remember of the 60s makeup were cream base products, the foundation, blush, and eyeshadow. Mascara seemed to be usually brown and I rember the white eyeliner. The Hippie look was usually bare or a minimum amount of makeup. My first makeup was from Avon a door to door sold product which I applied with my fingers, except the eyeshadow which came with a little applicator. The only time I saw false eyelashes was in the movie "Your's, Mine, and Ours" worn by Lucille Ball.

@@lupa1445 Well thank you for the kind words. To answer your questions, my first hair cut was when I was 7 years old so I wore ponytails most the time until my mother got tired of helping me with hair that I could sit on. The older girls, in the 60s, were wearing beehive up dos or shoulder length with bangs and the end flip, if you ever see the show "That Girl" Marlo thomas had the flip. Hair in the 70s was usually shoulder length no bangs parted in the middle some people of color wore the "Afro." By the way the boys were also wearing their hair just about the same except with lamb chop side burns😊. As for dresses or pants I never wore pants until I was 12 years old as we couldn't wear pants to school. Dresses at the beginning of the 60s were at knee level then started going up to the mini style by '65. Remember the fashion runways were a couple of years ahead of us middle class girls. By the time I was in High School dresses or skirts were worn at varying lengths; mini, midi, or maxi. Maxi (floor length) started by the flower child movement or Hippies, midi (mid calf) a bit of a hold over from the 50s and mini or baby doll (short dress with matching panties) When we were first allowed to wear pants, in 7th grade, they were polyester pantsuits which were not very attractive. My mother never wore pants always dresses and certainly not a mini. My first jeans, in High School, were bell bottom which flared at the knee and as I wore platform shoes usually did not need to hem them. I'm 5 foot 1 so most my store bought pants needed to be hemmed if worn with flats or tennis shoes. If you have read this far you must have been truly interested 😄 if you have more questions feel free to ask.

Yes, we had foundation back then. In fact, I think foundation in some form goes back a lot farther than the 1960s. And no, teenagers would not wear it every day. Mom's would if they were going out of the house. Teens would use foundation for camouflage. (Really handy for covering teen acne.) Also for formal occasions or when you were expecting to be photographed. Photo flashes send light right through the skin. All those blotchy spots you thought were gone show right up under photoflash. So basically I used foundation much the same way I do today. If I want a really smooth look, a little foundation does the job.

From 1940's videos I've seen, cream and liquid foundation seems to not really have been a thing that far back, but powder foundation and stick concealer used over a moisturizer seems to have been. Obviously I wasn't there, since I'm born in the 2000s, but I think full face cream and liquid makeup probably became popular in the 50's or 60's just from the 3-4 makeup videos from 1930's-1940's that I've watched. Although when cream concealer is blended well into a moisturizer base I'm sure that it's similar to foundation. That's just from my very limited second-hand knowledge, though. :)

Bronzing definitely was a thing in the 60s! It's actually when bronzers really started to make a name for themselves within the world of cosmetics. The trend of wanting to look tan in the 60s was largely the reason for it. It was definitely used differently though, it's original intended purpose was to just give the face warmth and a tanner complexion compared to today where it's kind of synonymous to contouring and used to sculpt the face. Your Sophia Loren example you gave is accurate to this as well as if you look at most photos of Twiggy you can see her cheeks especially have a sun-kissed bronze to them. Marlo Thomas in That Girl is also a great example, her makeup on the show is actually pretty heavily bronzed! You can see in her makeup on the show that it's quite similar to the more modern look of sweeping bronzer and blush over the whole cheek and she even has a nose contour! Sorry for the crazy long comment, I'm just a makeup loving history nerd! 💕

It's so exhausting when popular youtubers just brutally tear down other creators when they're just doing their thing, having a good time, and sharing it. I am not familiar with Brittany, but she seems like she's just having a great time, and I enjoyed both your commentary and the clips from her vids. And your constructive critique is *genuinely* constructive and helpful. Learning things!! Thank you!

Strong disagree regarding bucket hats. They're fine, they just require better styling. If you're only dressing in vintage daywear, then no, you're not going to be able to wear a bucket hat. However, they can be very well paired with streetwear styles (which no, streetwear styles aren't just activewear), casual tailoring, and vintage workwear and heritage styles. Especially in the case of the latter, 'bucket hats' have been around for around a century (at least), in the form of daisymae caps.

I was playing with makeup in the Kate 60’s if my mother didn’t catch me. Foundations were mostly oil-based and we didn’t use *blush* we used ‘rouge’. NASCAR’s was the thing that has changed the most-the only mascara we could afford was the Maybelline cake mascara. It didn’t come in a tube with a wand. It was a dry cake that you had to add water (spit) to make a paste that went on with the flat brush. I borrowed my mother’s liquid eye liner/shadow that was a metallic blue green colour. It was hideous but we wore it anyway. White lipstick became popular along with blue eye shadow.

Karolina, I was a preteen in the 60’s. Teens wore make up and lots of it. Foundation, powder, (the powder compact was always in the handbag for touch ups!), cream blush, (some were in cake form, though no bronzer as such. That darker shades came in in the early 70’s but as a darker coloured pink, not brown toned.) The eye shadow was often in bright, shiny or matte cream form. The eyebrows were lightly shaped and plucked, the eyeliner heavy black kohl pencil and drawn on, the eyebrow drawn in with a brown pencil. The mouth was usually a shade of toned down bright pink, sometimes red for evening. I know as I would sit for hours and watch my cousins do their make up. It was extreme. The hair, I was often fumigated by the amount of hairspray they would use on their over teased and beehived heads. I loved the drama of this whole spectacle, the mini skirts which made my Uncle shudder! My cousins were so indulgent of letting me in their space when I would come to stay. Hence I can honestly the Brit accent girl, was somewhat tight on her look, but a tad off. Thank you for sharing, thoroughbred enjoyed this video.

One thing about the later Sixties to consider is that they were super influenced by the Pre-Raphelite art movement, Art Nouveau, and the 1920s to 1930s when it came to female beauty aesthetics, along with the fallout of the massive eye makeup fad created by the Elizabeth Taylor Cleopatra movie that came out at the beginning of the decade. So there's a lot of variety to parse in all of that. You could do a 1930s brow style with a smoky Pre-Raphelite eye; you could do a heavily lined Cleopatra-influenced eye and a solid Elizabeth Taylor brow combined with a 1930s shimmery eyelid and not be out of sync with the style of that era at all. And then you have the influence of Op Art and psychedelia to consider in top of all of that! I love love Sixties eyes for all of that! There's just so many ways to mix it up, but you do have to have a good handle on the contemporary cultural influences that were guiding that aesthetic if you're going to work within it to do your own thing.

As far as I can remember, I think you are correct regarding foundation and most people. My mom did not use foundation, nor did any of my Aunts or Step-moms. Maybe they used a bit of max factor concealer? But sometimes they were mixing the concealer with their lipstick, or over lining their lips with it. Foundation didn't hit mainstream until the 80's and Way Bandy...but they they did used pressed powder that had light to medium coverage in the 70's.

"Arched" will be pronounced as [artʃed] (I guess in Polish it's č). As a non-native speaker but a as a person who reads in English a lot, we all tend to same that mistake. The point is that by the language rule yes , it has to be a sound K since it comes from Greek, but hey this is English! XD so it's like "chamber", "chair", "challenge". This language has rules to break it. My mom says cosmetic production that came from Poland was so so posh in USSR! As well as magazines - considered to be very Western. We still have books translated from Polish called "Modern Beauty" where advices are given how to take care of hair, nails and etc. Apparently Polish beer shampoo was a huge thing. I love your videos❤
