In this video I give you an update of my progress with Japanese. I'm currently focusing on reviewing N4 level and there's quite a lot of work to do for me to achieve that!

Advice for making immersion more fun: -rewatch stuff in Japanese that you already watched in the past (already knowing the plot makes ambiguity more tolerable) -look up the synopsis of whatever it is you're gonna watch before you watch it (makes it easier to follow along despite low comprehension) -use the Chrome extension 'yomichan' in combination with either 'language reactor for netflix' or yt videos with (non-auto generated) subtitles to make on the spot lookups effortless -drop a show/yt vid the second you get bored/find it annoyingly hard to follow.

I'm so glad to see that you are still doing these Japanese progress videos! I remember doing the たら、なら、ば、と etc. and they are quite confusing. Satori reader is really good from what I have heard, and reading in general is a really good activity for picking up vocabulary. I'd be interested to see what you think of it. Lastly I'd just like to point out that while a little immersion is definitely beneficial, I wouldn't bother sitting in front of the TV for 4 hours a day and hoping for progress. While it certainly works, it's just not a good investment of your time (especially at anything below an upper intermediate level) and 30 minutes of reading or targeted kanji/vocab study is just the more efficient way of going about things. I know the opinions are split on this, but I just don't see how having a screen blast at you for hours on end without you actually understanding anything is helpful (you = impersonal you here, not you in specific). Excited for the next update video!

Yeah, I think if the language doesn’t have enough cognates with your language(s) you might want to hold off on extensive listening until you’re at a higher level although I’ve had more success with reading authentic content at a lower level.

I’ve been trying to add more authentic content to my routine, but it’s been pretty boring. I feel like I started regressing a few days after I started doing regular extensive listening. I hope things start to turn around.
