I think the only thing that makes C2 English learners to seem obvious for native speakers that they are not native in English is their accent, and all the other things that you mentioned in the video like being familiar with the history of a country where the language is spoken, its pop culture, being able to understand what kind of way of using vocabulary sounds natural/unnatural and etc. is very easy to learn since C2 level means that you are exposed to the language completely.

My feeling, the word choice of a native speaker is deeply associated with the emotional context they've been immersed in since childhood. So, how could it be possible to do the same thing being out of the context? The C2 is just a fantastic achievement.

Even if I've been learning English for a decade (it's a compulsory course during school years here in my country), and just got my C1 certificate, there are still tons of things to learn in so many aspects... so yes those videos talking about how one MASTERS a dozen of languages in just a few years, they are ridiculous and misleading. Moreover, I don't even think I have a sufficient efficency in my mother tongue, learning languages or in any other field is just a lifelong process. PS: about the impossibility of being truly native, I've been struggling with the acceptance of that fact, so that you pointed it out actually encouraged me a little bit:) I'm trying to come to terms with that

Would you say the "Write and Improve" website is accurate on estimating your Cambridge English level? If so, to what extent is it accurate? On my worst days, I would score right about the B2 level, whereas on my best days, C2. I am keen on improving for self-education!

You are actaully describing phonetics rather than phonology! Phonology is more so sound patterns and the important, distinctive sounds in a language. The two fields closely interact though. you first need an understanding of phonetics before you can move onto phonology:)

I'm French and honestly i hate my natif langage

I was thinking about your comment about sociolinguistics: I am US American, born in western Pennsylvania. In this part of the country, some folks say “git” instead of “get”, call shopping carts “buggies”, use “yinz” as a plural “you”, etc. I also find my years of being taught English grammar in school helpful for learning other languages. While many polyglot influencers recommend against studying grammar, I prefer to learn it, as it helps me compose sentences and say off the wall things in a language I want to learn, even to myself. Speaking of transitive verbs, when I took Arabic in college, the GA was trying to explain it, as it was related to verb forms in Arabic and a classmate wasn’t understanding. I offered to explain it, as I was taking linguistics and had taken a course in English grammar (these were for my TEFL Certificate; the Arabic was for a translation degree): I explained it by helping her find the verb. I then said you ask “who or what” to find the subject, and ask “who or what” again to find a direct object. If there is an answer to the second “who or what” that is not the same as the subject, the sentence is transitive. If not, it’s intransitive.

Your last tip was what I found to work great for me. If you are a gamer, or into a particular hobby other than language learning(models, remote control, audio/video, etc); There is probably a related group on Discord or Reddit in your target language! Now I get great practice with natives in my TL almost every day! As usual Kevin, the video was insufferable from start to finish and appreciate the tips and humor you bring to the community. British English and American English are very much the same, and very much different... Much like québécois French and métropole French.... I don't care, I love them all (not to mention the many different regional variations). In any case, language is for communication, and if you understand, who cares? Although I have never seen "learnt" spelled like that and would never say it like that... Again who cares... Let's just understand one another and move one ***I mean, I'm a native English speaker and like at how bad my grammar and punctuation is 😂

Because when you are fored to learn French for 10 years and then you are left with nothing but a beginner level and a wast of time altough you could've learnt a languages you actually liked you will be scared for life.

Steve is a fake. I couldn´t tell when I was vulnerable and learning. Plus, he follows the pattern of fake. IF a person is deadly serious about learning a foreign language to identify as that culture, which is my case with Iberian Spanish, there is a large degree of radicalization in approach. Now, that´s irrelevant when the question is ¨Does that radical approach work?¨. In my case, I have Spaniards, whom I must believe, tell me, I can´t tell you're not from Spain. I´ve been studying for 2.5 years but, I quit my job to do it and I now am identifying as a Spaniard. Intense. Not for everyone. However, at the C1 level, I can hear Steve´s Spanish is at best A2. He makes tons of mistakes and his accent is horrible. I don´t want to accomplish that one, must less 10 times!! Kevin, you sound great in English. I define fluent as a vocabulary of 20,000 native words, effortless use of all tenses and moods, the ability to discuss advanced topics and you sound like a native.

I’ve just taken up learning French again and one of the things that makes me feel better about my mistakes is acknowledging all the times I mess up what I’m saying /hearing/writing in English when I am a well-educated 42 year old native English speaker, so of course my French cannot possibly be perfect!

That's how you spell it though????? Ok, the "How dare you teach me about your second language " made me laugh so much. I've learnt so much English grammar from foreigners because they've had to learn it while natives don't. I don't think I even knew what a infinitive was until I started learning languages. 😂

What's the point of being so obsessed with this native sounding thing? You are understood by others and you understand them that's it, just go and learn one more language if your aim is to keep your brain busy with learning new things.
