Yes you can disconnect from the stick to make it more of a handheld.

I dump mine in the toilet so that the pet dust and dander doesn’t get stirred into the air every time I open my garbage but my garbage can is on a track that would disperse it into the air way worse than a normal garbage can.

I wouldn't recommend that if you are on septic though. Hair does not biodegrade very well (at all) and dumping a quart of hair in it once or twice a week certainly won't do your system any favors over time. I simply dump in our outdoor can and rinse filters with the garden hose outside or in a 5gal bucket. .

Omg noooo do not dump into your toilet! It's going to clog over time. I take mine outside (to avoid any dust coming up when emptying the bin), and dump into a plastic grocery bag, tie it up tight, then toss that bag in my trash
