I’ve gotten 3 flats while riding doing 30+. But never while raining! I’m sure that made it a lot worse. My Monster pro did the best I actually kept riding on it n just thought I was have problems with my equilibrium. 😂 The tire was so stiff it even looked fine when I got off and squeezed it. Finally realized it was flat after getting off the wheel about 3 times. Now I keep a permanent pressure gauge on my wheel that will alert me when my tire is losing any pressure. It was on about 30$. Glad your ok been watching you since the Segway mini pro days. 👍🏼

This was around 3 years ago now but the scenario and alternate scenarios still fill me with horror regularly to today. What if I had gone down at a different moment? What if my flying wheel had hit an oncoming vehicle causing a secondary crash. It was truly a life changing moment. Have never ridden at those speeds again (except for very brief bursts) and certainly never when in moving traffic with other motorised vehicles again. So glad you are ok. It really does make you reassess your riding. Well done for having all the protective gear on.

So, so glad you are OK man. Many of us have logged thousands and thousands of miles in mixed traffic. This is the moment we all dread: A random, highly infrequent failure completely out of our control, where we need to depend upon the decency, judgement, and sobriety of other drivers just to get out of something alive. To me, this is a failure of infrastructure as much as anything else. The "shoulder" on this roadway (and I'm sure countless others) is an unsafe abomination designed to force riders into "do or die" decisions that place our lives squarely at risk. Shared, safe, respectful infrastructure is possible. I've seen it, ridden it, and appreciated it. And when it isn't present, well, it just shows how much work we have ahead of us to envision a world where cars and vehicles are *part* of the design transportation ecosystem and not the sole beneficiary.

At age 46, everyone I know that's ever been killed were all bicyclists - all where they were supposed to be in the bike lane or shoulder. I will only ride on the sidewalks or if it's on the road, then it's only a road where I can keep up with traffic and then I take the lane, not the shoulder, while also making sure no-one is immediately behind me. If a cop wants to give me a ticket, then they can give me a ticket. Bike lanes and shoulders are far too dangerous, at least here in the US.

I believe the flat tire is the combination of three conditions that were met. the low tire pressure, wet conditions, and a high torque wheel. The valve stems shearing off is likely caused by the slippage of the tire and inner tube from the rim. These three conditions are probably your culprit.
@DufАй бұрын
I agree and disagree but more will be verified when I take the wheel apart to assess
@oueuc2Ай бұрын
It's very important to have a higher tire pressure at speed. The tire can slowly rotate and shear the valve off. This video definitely gonna make me ride safer! I took my brand new OG Sherman on its maiden voyage to the bank less than a mile away. On my way back the tire came unseated and the inner tube exploded out the side instantly locking the wheel. I instantly face planted and slid on my stomach for a bit. I was probably going 20 mph. At some point it was so low the tire really didn't have enough support to keep the sidewalls erect. The tire caved immediately and veered off and I fell off the wheel. I check my tire pressure much more regularly since then.

Well we are very happy that you are still in one piece. On the tube failure, do we know why? Would slime have prevented the fail? I have a Master and at present no Slime but you have me thinking. As for that feeling you are in in your last moments, I have had that. I used to Hang Glide and had the misfortune to land in the sea. I new my survival time was in minutes, too short a period for me to be rescued, I was sure. I was rescued after 14 minutes by the Royal Navy in a Sea King Helicopter. In that period I had a lot of time to think, I was certain I was not going to survival the ordeal, and it opened my perspective on life in a way that had a profound affect on me for some time. It still conjures up that reality for me now when I think of it. When the helicopter was over my head, like having as battleship hovering over you, you can feel the warmth of the jet exhaust (I was suffering from hypothermia) and smell the aviation fuel. When I smell that smell today, at an air show, or at an airport, it takes me back to that incident in a second.

Very glad you’re physically OK after that scary experience. Bound to have a bit of PTSD after that, but hope you get your confidence back soon. Your video scared the crap out me and I rushed off to check my tire pressure after I watched it. Reckon ‘check pressure AND gear up every ride’ is my new augmented rule set. Had a bad scare 2 years back when a hit-and-run taxicab sideswiped me in the bike lane as he turned right and I vaulted my 65 year old ass over his roof. No great harm done but these events make you aware how vulnerable we are in unprotected bike lanes. Many drivers are uncaring until they hit you. I ride separate bike lanes, trails or sidewalks where I can.

In my case it appears the tire valve ripped off, hard to predict that one

D-A-M-N!! I call that 'factor X' and constantly warn my son to be aware of it. Things happen in the blink of an eye & I'm glad your good!! This could have been a very different post..

Glad that you are safe. i bought armordilloz tire repair goo a day or two ago, as people say that it has a 100% fix rate for punctures. they also say that you can leave it in for years. It is definitely gong to get packed in my future euc toolkit that I plan to carry around.
@DufАй бұрын
It's good stuff but won't save you if the valve steam tears
@RoyCarterАй бұрын
@@Duf I just got a master not long ago, so this interests me. When I swapped out my tire to street, it seemed like the only thing contacting the stem hole was the metal stem itself. It would seem more likely that you got a puncture with a modest leak. Once the rim side pressure got low enough, the rim spun inside the tire, ripping the stem out. You could put the pump in the stem hole left in the tube, and wrap it up with tape or a zip tie (left over from your tire change) and see if there isn't another leak somewhere in the tube once it has some pressure in it.
@NewsViewsAndTruthАй бұрын
@@RoyCarterRoy, this was going to be my follow-up question to Duf. Would a small leak in the valve stem possibly end in critical failure a little later? I think that this is possible and that armodilloz might help in this case also. It is possible that the valve came off completely, but wouldn't you also agree that it's possible that it was a small leak that became a critical failure?

go tubeless. Slower air loss, better handling and stability and less prone to punctures as there is no inner tube. In addition, they can self seal (especially with sealant inside), therefore reducing the chance of a sudden flat. Lucky you!

Might be the next move

@@Duf i forgot on whether or not the Masters rim can fit a tubeless tire. You may want to check first of course. Good Luck 👍🏼.

I tried doing that to my Monster but could not find the tubeless tire. Ended up putting the green glue in my tube to hopefully slow down the air loss. Mine deflated in less than 1 second

Thanks for sharing, glad you are fine! Its alway nice when you get home in one piece to recalibrate. I've been thinking of upgrading my master, after your video, it will definitely be to a EUC with a tubeless tire like the et max that ewheels has (someday when I have the money 😄)Also I am going to stop riding so close to traffic and will definitely be extra paranoid about the tire pressure for now and will ride slower.

Now that's the kind of road you never wanna be on. Cars passing at high speed and close range. Even if your wheel doesn't malfunction, other things can happen. A simple piece of debris in your bike lane could spell disaster. Just because the DOT painted a bike lane there doesn't make it even remotely safe to ride on. I was in a similar situation. Was on 20% battery, struck a small piece of debris, had a cutout and went down. Cut my ankle deep, almost damaged the achilles tendon. I was super lucky. Hope this experience helps you stay safe in the future. Good luck and keep having fun!

OMG, I am so relieved that this got a happy ending. Most accidents happen, if both did not pay attention. This time the others had pad attention and reacted immediately. And for you: I cannot imagine any other rider could have avoided this fall. So which lesson did you learn from this? Not to ride anymore on those streets? Otherwise something like that could always happen again. I wish you all the best!
