Many people requested I critique my own form as an experiment from the latest video I just posted about me shooting recurve archery at 70 meters for the first time in about three years. I address many of the questions that were posted in the video of me shooting here in this video to help answer and address certain issues that arose.

I have noticed the wrist angle change from load to anchor when you were shooting in the video and was wondering why that is so. In you intro sequence (the younger you shooting), I always admired the monolithic hand/elbow/shoulder movement when you were coming to anchor (this is something I struggle with very much in my own form). Like a solid lever. Interesting what 3 years did to you :-) EDIT: OMG the minute detail you are conscious of during the shot cycle is amazing ... I never even realized you can have that much control during the shot cycle ...

Ok... you already explained it at the end with the years and the sheer amount of arrows you have shot... but man, this video really brought into focus for me just how connected you are to your shot. I don't know why, but for some reason I anticipated you noticing additional things from reviewing and coaching yourself. This was still a great video in that you had the time to elaborate and explain more, but what it really highlighted for me is just how dialed in you are and how much you really KNOW exactly what is going on in the moment. Obviously this is a level of shot awareness that every archer should strive for, such an invaluable skill to develop, that is my big take away from this video. Thanks for the continued insight Jake!

Thank you for this video and the 70m video from a few days ago. I shoot a little Olympic recurve but primarily shoot target compound. These videos helped me with my compound shooting. My groups had opened up and I was struggling to figure out why. I realized I was not keeping a consistent grip pressure. So while there are some differences between the different bow styles...there are some aspects which carry across.

My theory on the forward lean is you are using the change of center of gravity (pressure) to force yourself to move your arms back to maintain balance, thereby getting the clicker to go off!

your arrow count at the end was eye opening. with work/kids/obligations i maybe get 70-120 arrows a day over two sessions. I guess i'd better make every arrow count!!! Great video, learnt a great deal

I like your details. I like that you share your knowledge for the masses. I do the same.I shot archery in The early 1990s. Target and 3D. I was a fly casting champion, winning the nationals and on the USA team many years. I won the nationals in 1993! We had to pay for everything ourselves so I couldn’t afford to go to Europe to compete, but did compete when the World events came to Ontario Canada in 1984. We were part of the Olympic team. I wore the Official uniform, but casting wasn’t done that year. It was an elective sport. I’m proud that I’ve cast 2 handed 315 ft and single handed 215 ft. There are 6 accuracy event and 6 distance events. I was top in distance but my eyes weren’t strong enough to win accuracy events. I did tie for 1st but lost the shoot off.

Great to watch, can’t believe how you correctly diagnosed each shot taken as you took them. The reviewing as a coach after shows how connected you and the bow have become even after your three year break. A vid showing how you would correct yourself would be a great follow up. Great content, thank you Jake!

Hi Jake, I'm new to your channel, but I think I will become a frequent visitor. I find your way to convey this discipline, very revealing. I shoot barebow but have been struggling with target panic for years. This time I've decided that I really want to get out of it, and I think your work will help me. Thanks for what you do.

I'm at 14:20 in, and chuckling. Those spinning noisy wooden Guadalajara things, in my childhood were the 'weapon' of choice for most Brit soccer fans of my grandparent's generation, and for years before, I don't doubt - they only went out of favour in the 1960s, when soccer and TV came together. We knew them as 'football rattles', and had one at home at some point. Great video, BTW - a lot to take in and process so far (not least around the implications of lacking flexibility at release, and the effect on accuracy. I'm aware this is a problem for me. I guess I'll press on - probably watch this in a couple or three thoughtful sittings (before I finally decide whether to make some cheap/uniquely British/cat-based double-entendre jokes on here 😜 👍)

Wonderful insight and analysis. I noticed you falling forward in the first video, but thought that was intentional as you were expanding through the clicker. So glad you pointed out in this second video that it was not intentional before I got a chance to get out and practice that way. BTW, I don't have a clicker on my barebow, but it seems to help me with expansion if I pretend I have a clicker.

Thanks for posting this. This is a fantastic resource. You shoot better groups at that distance with a bow than a lot of people can shoot with a rifle, even after 3 years. I've been watching a ton of your videos lately, I don't plan on competing but I think this would have a lot of carry over to hunting, similar to tactical guys learning how to shoot firearms from competition shooters. I thought I was shooting a lot by trying to do 100 a day (and getting worn out by it), if you only shot 5 days a week you did 330 a day, that's nuts.

@@JakeKaminskiArchery you’re welcome! that’s still 2.75 times what I’m doing right now lol. I’m in shape but it’s definitely a completely different recruitment of muscles shooting a bow. The last few shots are definitely not as clean as the others by the end but i can tell the endurance is building

Great vid! Seeing yourself shoot is some of the best feedback you can get. You can do it on your own and catch things you never thought you were doing. Like mouth open and gasping for breath.....ok you wern't gasping.. just funny you caught it. Be great if every time you set up new equipment to shoot a round. We use to do that... way..way long ago..when we changed something and just shot around to see how it felt. Sometimes it was a short round cause we found it wasn't right. Course we wern't at your level....

Jake great vid buddy ..Looking back at your form you can see your passion coming though..Had an idea for a vid how about comparing an older bow iser with the up to date one ..So something your 2019 Win Win to say an older hoyt ie Avalon GMX etc ..Look at how good the modern riser is to a 20 year old one .With the way the modern riser has developed over the years ..Also in the mix things like the Samick Masters the PSE Browning etc .How much is it the archer .Could a archer shooting an old bow be competitive on the right day..Just a thought..

@markwalsh1474
@markwalsh1474 3 жыл бұрын
You also could look at the limbs ..Hoyt had the Carbon plus .Must be late 80's when they came out ..I used them in the mid 90's I guess..Them we go to arrows ..The x10's were introduced in the early 90's as well as the ACE's..A lot of people still using x10's and ACE..So again how much had changed..Your old Hoyt Axis how would that perform against say a cheap CNC machined riser like a Topoint Enison or the Kinetic .These mite the same though..The Axis must be 15\20 years old by now ..Anyway just some ideas.Have a great day Buddy...

Hi Jake, have you thought of holding group classes - say full weekend or even week long? I know that I wouldn't mind visiting Florida and attending one of your classes - you seem like you'd be a great instructor.

Ive considered. I have a place I can coach people out of, a local NFAA archery club that lets me use their place. If there was enough interest for a longer weekend type camp deal I would for sure love to have one.
