My new coaching series is here! I'm super excited to share these videos with you and I hope they are enjoyable for you to watch as they have been to make.
For anyone not aware, I will be taking on a student who has NEVER played a cash game hand of poker in his life. In this video, we take a look at the first hands he has ever played, and dive deep into the mind of Jake 'All-In' Ballard.
And on that note, a HUGE thank you to the man himself for putting himself out there and making this content with me. He is such a great lad and I will do everything I can to help him on his journey!
Let's go: It's Beginner to Winner!

I know right. I came up in like the Pete Clarke type school of thought and I completely skipped over fish logic. So I have no idea whatthey are thinking or how to even translate to my way of thinking whatthey are doing and why they would even have that thought. I think it is cool that this guy is bad, knows he is bad and is excited to learn how not to be bad.

I tried teaching my Mum poker the other day, and it was exactly like this hahaha, the clickbacks and betting too small always... Seems to come naturally to beginners. Dw Jake you'll do fine, everyone sucks at first, Easty will teach you well! Important thing about "eventualities" is how likely those eventualities are. For example, a random suited hand has somewhere between 4-5% chance to flop two pair or better, closer to 5 if it's connected, closer to 4 if it's completely disconnected. I found that fact quite helpful when assessing speculative hands, and "implied odds" which Easty will undoubtedly cover at some point. Good luck mates!

Great series idea. I loved going back to the beginning of my poker thinking with Jake. Its crazy how alien thinking like that feels now but we probably all can relate to the small sit and gos and tournaments we would play with our mates thinking like this. It's a chaotic wilderness when you have no compass and have to just make shit up to make it make sense. I wonder if giving him probabilistic thinking with concret numbers would help. Like the 2 and 4 rule with outs... Laying out well if we bet small here and win 100 percent how does that compare to betting bigger and winning 30 percent. etc.

He is kinda of right when he talks about suited connectors and implied odds, he just picked awful combo for it. I agree that you should completely switch his strategy to be exponentially more aggressive but he is sort of right about the value of ‘sneaky’ hands - if 100+bb deep of course 😂😂 Fun video
@PBrooks111

2nl is first hand would start with SB cold calling plus lead= recreational and should change whole approach. Raise flop good then fold to click wen recreationals 3bet flop. EmPhasis hand strength relative to range you face Wen he says 'feels strong' second hand, need to reaffirm it's correct and then give the reasoning why. Will help with fixing sizing as good reasoning prob gets him closer to how much equity he has Would recommend to focus more on hand reading and logic. Then that will ease away the instinct stuff. He said suddenly 'he has more chips now he trying to bully me' in 66 hand that's instinctual and needs to be drilled out/ given logical replacements in place For first time surprisingly very good job coaching, tackled main things really well mate. Teaching combo counting basics at least and early is vvv effective even at beginner stage of learning 🎉🎉🎉

I think it would benefit you to watch some of Jonathan Little’s “beginner” series Nick. Could tell from the video you did with Pete that you two were massively overestimating the level of knowledge from lads like Jake. Rather than working hand by hand and offering tidbits along the way - start from the bottom I.e. clarify basic terminology and make sure he properly understands the format of the game. Then start implementing “good poker principles” I.e. what hands to play and what hands to fold preflop, the importance of playing from position (and what playing from position actually means), generally always raising first into pots etc. it’s clear that most of this is missing with Jake. The best comparison I can give is golf. If you’re teaching a beginner you don’t go straight onto the course, you make sure the player is gripping the club properly, his setup over the ball is correct, his stance is correct etc. Get the baseline fundamentals correct and then the rest follows.

When it comes to knowledge whether is poker or science or anything the only way to proceed is starting with a solid base and then build on that. So before playing any hands i would start teaching things like what range means. What position means. What part of your range you play from each position preflop. How do you play that part of your range. You need a couple of hours at least for a person that apparently has no clue before you can start talking about donk betting, or why you chose a specific sizing, or how a card that comes to turn or river change the overall equity of our hand...or range
@HarveySpecter0
@HarveySpecter0 6 ай бұрын
I kinda agree with this. Also pot odds would not be such a bad idea to introduce. I guess it's better to study some concepts off screen though. When you coach, you actually realize how many things are out there to dig into and it's impossible to cover all of them on stream.

Nick, I think you are a bit laying down casually weird passwords like "never limp" or "never donk" or "always play with 100bb" and this is not a good way to teach. The student need to understand why, and when you know why limping is bad or why donking is bad, then you can get it by yourself. I feel you need to further explain the fundementals for a conversation - like range, positions before you can talk to him about a specific strategy.
@eastyyy22
@eastyyy22 6 ай бұрын
I respectfully disagree. I just want to start by removing some bad tendencies, he has barely played the game in his life, it's not the time to start overloading him with reasons why we do things or don't do things when he won't understand them and it's bound to detract from other things I want to introduce. And please remember, this series is two pronged. I am NOT a poker coach, and I'm trying to learn how to do that while Jake learns to play. Cheers.
@animaroku
@animaroku 6 ай бұрын
@@eastyyy22 I understand and appreciate the time you spent writing the comment. I think it's the best time to teach the fundementals, because his mind has yet to be corrupted by nonesense, and he can reallly absorb them pretty easily. I think you are making contradicting statements during the video, which would've not be contradcting if you wouldn't use the passwords, and I believe contradictions are what will hold him back more than good fundemntal ground. When he plays the Q9s you say that betting all in is incorrect because he needs to "think what would call" and there are not many hands that call all in. But - when he has a set of 6s, he just need to go all in, because his hand is good most of the time. So there are 2 contradicting passwords - 1. You need to bet big with your nutted hands 2. You need to bet small with your nutted hands to induce calling Now - what logic should I apply? If you would lay some fundemntal knowledge beforend, there would be no contradiction - for instance - with our nutted hands, we want to bet a size that the multiply of it times the percentage of calls will be the maximum. So - how do you get the max? On dry boards, the percentage of calls is higher than on wet boards, so even though we have similar hand strengh, the bet sizes should be different.
