This would be a large stash to me. But I'm from a "developing country" so our notion of overconsumption is very different from people in the US. I think your idea of bringing it down to the three big bins is great. I know I would personally feel lighter with a slightly smaller stash

The “buy, buy, buy” mentality in the USA is wild. I know I’m a part of it but it still drives me crazy what we’re conditioned to believe is normal.
@gwenminute41854 ай бұрын
I’d say it’s the perfect medium yarn stash, you have plans for almost everything but then also enough that if you come up with an idea, you don’t have to go shopping. I’m currently studying abroad in Germany and one thing I’ve noticed about yarn shopping here is that everything (everything ive personally seen) is at least oeko-tex certified, which is the only way i’ll buy any yarn or fabric after reading “to dye for”, and also priced at a point that is 100% economically sustainable for the makers. It’s nice being able to go grab something really quick and not feel the need to do a bunch of research beforehand and once I get back to the US I will continue buying the majority of my yarn from Europe and local sellers.

To me personally, this feels like a large stash. I tend to buy yarn when I have a specific project in mind & I've already bought the pattern. Only exception to this is when I'm travelling and have access to yarn not available in my country. I also move a lot + am new to crochet/knitting so I'm sure that helps keep the stash small. I will say, you seem very aware of your yarn consumption compared to most content creators I've seen, and it's very refreshing.

A fellow fan of Drops Air here, I've only made two hats with it so far but love how light and soft it is! I thought the same about the fisherman's wool, but when I made a sample swatch and washed it, it was so much softer than I could have imagined. I was going to make a blanket with mine but I ended up making a vest and it is so nice and soft. I am really sensitive around the neck also. If you have a question about how a yarn will be at your most sensitive areas, make a small swatch, wash it and then wear it next to your skin for awhile to see how it feels.

I always think it’s interesting to see how other people sort their yarn- by color, fiber, etc., and thanks for sharing your thoughts about the yarn as well! And I loved how practical you are with not deciding that organizing requires purchasing new containers! I try to think about my stash like a library because it’s not something to be hidden away and never interacted with, or jealously guarded like a hoard (I try to be a good sharer with my mom, daughter, and sister). My yarn library is arranged by yarn weight. I didn’t get a sense from your video of how much yarn you have in different weights. Sorting mine that way has helped me to notice what I actually use (fingering and sport) and don’t (bulky), which then helps me with purchasing and with project planning. I also have a separate place for sweater quantities and another “special” box for kits/fades/favorite dyers. Lastly, I suspect you might be a spinner at heart! I learned how a couple years ago and now I also have a box of handspun :).

3 things 1. Love this video! So cozy to organize yarn with you 2. For the peer gynt you wanted to knit socks with, be aware that socks in that kind of yarn will get holes very easily! It has no nylon and therefore wears down in no time when used as roughly as socks get used. (if you want to make socks without plastic I would recommend using a pretty tightly spun yarn) 3. Try checking out “Laerke Bagger” She does a lot of knitting with scraps and is pretty cool (in my opinion) maybe you could get some inspiration for you “junk draw” yarn❤

I would totally watch another video like this to see how your stash fluctuates. I saw some other videos about stashes and how people got overwhelmed by it and wanted to ged rid of things - in short: a lot of less thoughtful accumulation up to that point. But I really like your kind of reasoning about your purchases and I think it is interesting to hear your thoughts about your changing stash as it fluctuates over time. Maybe what did you learn from it or how your habits and preferences changed and how can you see (or just not see) that in your changing stash? In addition, I like the amount of stash if one can say that. It's not as massive as with some other creators. I'd say it's a good medium stash and I don't see a lot of small of medium stashes (which is why I don't see myself in these). I think we should be more reasonable about our stashes, dependent on how much and which items do we really like to knit/ crochet. It makes a difference if you knit a lot of pullovers or just hats and socks. Edit: I forgot to mention, I absolutely love your cinematic intro!

I think that your yarn stash is a good size. Looking at it in the containers, it does seem like a lot, but in your run through of it I got the impression that you have some distinct plans for a bunch of it, and that you are exploring some new-to-you yarns, so it makes sense that you have all that! You are a consistent maker, so I have no doubt that you will put it to good use, and that it will shrink, and then grow again ha ha! I just moved into an apartment and got all my yarn in one place, and I am concerned by the amount of it. It is however decades of accumulation. I am diligently working on using it but it's slow going.

First of all, a big stash is when you fell overwhelmed with your yarn, a small stash is when you always run out of yarn and medium stash is whenever you feel comfortable. There is no one fast rule "this many grams/skeins/metres are too many/too little" I think my own stash is comparable in size to yours, though made of very different yarns. Since 2019 I've been slowly and consistently changing the makeup of my stash - as a baby crocheter I obviously didn't know what I would like later on - but, surprisingly, the overall amount of yarn stays fairly constant My question for you would be - what kinds of yarn would you like to eliminate from your stash and which ones would you like to make your staples? You speak as if you really enjoy almost all of them, but are there any plans for the future?

I’d say your yarn stash is medium, I have about the same amount as you, and find it aaalmost perfectly managable😆 In regards to Sandes garn, I will say yarn made out of 100% norwegian sheep wool is almost always itchy and a bit irritating on bare skin, so I think this might be why a lot of nordic creators find Sandnes garn ‘soft’ because its often mixed with other yarn and feel way better than most norwegian yarn.☺️ However clothes made out of 100% norwegian wool yarn is so incredibly durable! I have a cardigan(spesifically a traditional norwegian ‘kofte’) that was made for my grandma around 1960 and I still wear it and it still looks amazing! The sweaters I have made recently with mixed wool however has started heavily pilling already😅

I personally would call this a medium stash, mostly because it's a similar size to me and I don't like thinking I have a big stash lol. I think it could be way bigger with how tempting and what a dopamine rush yarn buying is compared to actually making all the projects we plan lol. I have a huge problem with coming up with fun projects, getting yarn for them and then changing my mind or forgetting about it. And it causes me to overspend alot tbh. Oh well, I like having a bigger stash to shop from when I cant wait to go out for yarn or for shipping.

I would say you have a lovely small stash of wonderful yarn mines a little bigger and it does tend to overwhelm me so I hide it in a cupboard 😅 you have definitely made me want to try drops to make a garment of some description loving your videos from a very we Hampshire in the UK XX

Looking at all the bins at the end of the video made me want to say it’s a small stash but thinking back to you explaining every one makes me want to say medium haha I don’t know

I dont like having a stash of yarn beyond what I have plans for, I worry that I'd never use it otherwise. The ladies at the knit group sometimes talk about what'll happen to their massive collections when they pass, and I just can't imagine having so much that it gets to that point. The only thing I seem to accumulate is sock yarn, since I figure I'll get to it eventually. Also I've started spinning, so a solid chunk is just yarn I've made for practice. And yes, it does bug me that I dont know what to do with that yarn yet.

I think your stash is small-ish to medium in size. Quite a nice collection!

Compared to mine, it’s tiny. Goid for you for keeping it small!

I enjoyed this video a lot while knitting :) Thank you! To me your stash seems big but not huge or enormous. I personally feel pressure from having yarn, especially when I don't know what I am gonna use it for. So I actually want to get my stash down to almost zero (currently I have around one of your big boxes). I also don't need the inspiration from what I have, I rather get it when I am knitting and then I already plan out projects for the future, and when the time comes, I know what yarn to get. Anyways, as long as I don't feel yarn stashes get to big to be knit up ever and thus implicitely harming the environment, I am not against other people having stashes, I really like to look at them :)

I got a lot of love for the small stash people of the world! My stash was always less than one big and I was surprised at how quickly it grew since starting this channel. 😳

I think that’s a perfect sized stash and would class it as medium. It’s bigger than mine but so much neater. Mine is currently stored in colour coded drawers and it doesn’t work for me. Like you, I try to pass on my skills so that the art never dies. I was in my early thirties when my mum died and we’d somehow never got round to her teaching me how to knit. But I did save all her knitting needles. I finally taught myself how to knit and have since passed Mum’s needles to my sister and I’ve also taught her to knit now. Lastly, I’m intrigued by what looks like pom-pom flowers on the wall behind you; did you make them? And if so, did you happen to KZbin it and I’ve missed it?
@BreathingYarn4 ай бұрын
Love your beautiful story about passing on the art of knitting! Also, I did not record the flowers on the wall. I had a few felt ball garlands that i wasn’t using so I took them apart and glued the balls together to look like flowers. I really like them 🥰

I’m going to make a big felted knit bag with my fisherman’s wool! I ordered mine online and when I felt it I knew immediately that it was going to be too scratchy for any clothing item!

Also, one of the drapiest yarns I've personally used is Ella Rae's Cozy alpaca. I think it MIGHT be discontinued, but I've seen a ton of stock in some LYS's and on ravelry

I would say it’s a medium-large stash, but I think you probably knit a larger quantity of stuff? My friend recommend your channel to me yesterday and I’m a fan already! Perfect soothing companion while I knit. I have similar sensory preferences to you, so have been making note of some of these for myself 🥰

KFO merino colors are gorgeous. Maybe if you held them double you could make the seaglass sweater or tshirt.

you know those little clip-like snappy barrettes? I use those to keep the ends on the yarn ball so they don't tangle

Id say small to medium. But also the stash size seems to suit you so in a sense it’s the perfect size
@the_homun_system4 ай бұрын
pretty moderate stash. my yarn is in a round maybe 2 foot tall basket and a thinner one thats imminent project yarn once a current project ends and frees up hooks, needles, and just mental resources and i would say thats fairly small sized which is where i judge other stashes from. so its not extravagantly large but its not really a smaller amount.
@knallfroosch4 ай бұрын
I like your stash size. You have plenty of options but it's also not overwhelming? I think I have less than you but still feel like I have a lot to work with. I should really reorganize mine again so I know how much it REALLY is
@LadyWiggin4 ай бұрын
I think it’s a reasonable stash. It’s small by comparison to my own but larger than others I have seen.

You aren't the only one! Hand knit and crochet dish clothes and wash clothes feel ick to me too! Your yarn stash is slightly larger than mine, I'd say it is on the smaller side of medium.

This is a much bigger stash than I have, but that said- I'd say it's a plausible amount of yarn for a person to work through. Even if it took more than a year, you'd still probably get so much made with what you have without having to crunch. Personally, that's what makes a stash medium.
@stacilly40234 ай бұрын
I would say a medium size stash. I have way more than I should and have been downsizing mine recently. My nibblings have started crocheting so I have been sending most of my odds and ends, previous sale & impulse purchases to them to use.

I’d call that a medium stash. I have no idea how big mine is because it’s squirreled away all over the house. I guess that says it’s more than I can manage. Or more than I care to admit! ~Brenda

It’s a smaller yarn stash in my opinion but everyone is different and as well all figure out values and philosophies on our fiber crafts, we can end up with surpluses of yarns we no longer wish to purchase more of but do not want to waist (like when you start shifting away from acrylic yarns from corporate chain stores). I have a similar sized stash of just acrylics that I’m slowly finding new uses for since I no longer wish to purchase 100% synthetics.
@BreathingYarn4 ай бұрын
Yes, nobody talks about that. Switching to yarn that’s more your vibe but also trying not to waste the yarn you already have. So relatable!

I would say your stash is a medium size. I appreciate the reviews of the yarn you have worked with. I’d be interested in knowing what yarns that aren’t in your stash you would want to knit with and if you have any specific or broad plans for those yarns. I noticed you don’t really have any mohair in your stash, is it because mohair tends to be itchy or is it based on an ethical standpoint? Apologies if you’ve already addressed this before, I couldn’t remember. Great video 😊 Happy knitting and crafting!
@BreathingYarn4 ай бұрын
Ouuu, I would love to share the yarns I want to work with! The lack of mohair is due to an allergy issue. It makes my face swell up a little and gives me a rash. ☹️

I was touching some of the Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool in JoAnn a couple of days ago and it felt pretty scratchy to me. I don't know that you are "super picky" maybe more just a normal amount of picky in being careful of what you buy for clothing yarn. Found this entertaining as always - thanks for the work you put into this video! The Eddie Bauer yarn is exciting to me too lol but haven't bought yet. I think you have a medium stash!
