In my opinion, lit is just a waste of time. I mean like all you do is just read books and analyse them and there is no purpose for it. Learning maths and sciences on the other hand you are learning the language of the universe and reading the mind of God(if there is one). Please, someone enlighten me on the benefits and uses of literature.

+Daniel Rodriguez I used to think the same but I'm being genuinely serious when I say that literature gives you insight into not just the inner workings of the mind, but also explains human behaviour, helps you to examine history from various perspectives, learn moral lessons, develop empathy and an ability to see situations in another light. Thousands of years of society are reflected in literature as well as societal developments. We need literature to be able to understand humanity just as much as we need science. If the world was just full of facts and one sided ways of looking at the world society as a whole would have never been able to advance. Literature is also so important in a time of such horrible wars and terrorism to understand other cultures and ways of life - I could go on and on but seriously it's so important

yes eve i agree! science really does not know it's debt to imagination and creativity. in a time of growing technology and forever growing scientific pursuits and discoveries which just implement fact upon fact , it is so important to study subjects like english, history and languages as they always and have always been the key to the understanding of humanity through time, which keep us rooted and help us appreciate our past x PS IM SO SCARED TO GO INTO YR 11 OMG

Revision With Eve That was a very good reply and you have changed my view on literature. However I still believe that sciences are more important. Without it, no medicine, no technological advances and all that jazz... Although one may argue that without science wars would be much less destructive. However, with science, we can understand the laws of nature fully with just one equation perhaps less than one inch long, that describes the mechanics of the universe entirely, ranging from its inner workings in the realms of quantum mechanics to the very large in the realms of Einsteins general theory of relativity. In my opinion I believe that that is much more important. I understand that many people have different views and I respect them. But remember, a mathematical equation remains engraved into the fabric of the universe forever. Literature, merely till the end of the human race. Btw well done with ur AS results, you aced it.👊👍🎉 I'm taking my AS next year and I'm doing Maths FM Physics and computer science. Imma need a bit of luck with computer science tho lol😆
@bigdx5059
@bigdx5059 7 жыл бұрын
Rhea Jha I actually totally agree with you. Perhaps I was wrong. Creative subjects are important. Music for example helps me to think and have a clear mind when contemplating Einsteins equations or coming up with new ideas in physics. Learning fact after fact is not the way to go. However, neither is learning quote after quote for English. I'm sure you'll do fine in year 11. The year goes extremely quickly so make sure ur always on top of revision... Good luck, I'm sure you won't need it.

For anyone beginning their A Levels this year in any subject - it will start off difficult but you have to stick with it to do well. You won't understand it straight away but with hard work you can pull off the highest grades no matter what you got at GCSE. Anyone can achieve high as long as you put the work in. Good luck :)

i completely agree!! at the beginning of year 12 i was getting D's and in december i just sobbed because i couldn't see myself getting a B let alone an A. in around february, around mocks, it just clicked in my brain that i needed to focus on the AOs, like i got away with not knowing them at GCSE but for a-level it is so important!! i cant stress that enough. from february i was getting 20-23/25 on my streetcar essays and 30-33/40 on my frankenstein/the handmaid's tail essays! if anyone is worried i have some tips☺️ - know what AOs you need for each exam - litcharts will help you with your analysis - learn your context (!!! i cant stress this enough) - get the revision guides for your texts but do extra research, don't just rely on them but they're handy as they have a lot of information on critics☺️☺️ applying for an english literature degree at the moment, so please don't feel disheartened, year 12s, if you're struggling. you're being assessed on a two year specification, so you'll naturally pick it up as you go along☺️ good luck for 2017/18 guys!! 💛💛💛

Please could you make a video solely on how you make your mindmaps for english lit, e.g: do you put the character in the centre and then branch out quotes or do you link characters to a central theme...please please try and do that because it would be so helpful. i agree with how grades in english suddenly shoot up. for a good 8 or 9 months i was getting Ds and Es in essays and was so demotivated, cried to my teacher saying i'm gonna fail and won't get into uni, she told me i'm actually doing well (i was like are you having a laugh do you enjoy my pain?) and to stick with it and i somehow got a B in my last essay and an A in the mock exam! its definitely has the biggest jump from gcse and it's the most challenging subject i've ever taken, and sometimes i'm like "WHY on earth did you pick this?!" specifically during poetry and coursework... but for some reason i'm still glad i chose it. i find it fascinating how many interpretations can come out of one quote and how deep people in my class can analyse things, sometimes to the point where everyone's sat there rethinking life 😂
@GSCuddles5025

The second year of English literature is so much harder than AS in my opinion - that may also be because my teachers changed some of the texts we were studying. But I do think the texts studied were much more enjoyable. The exams are much longer and different and so much more knowledge and skill is required of you (like it wasn't demanding enough in AS)! The 50% context essays are a killer and I walked out of my first exam crying my eyes out thinking I'd completely flopped but came out with an A (somehow). My biggest advice is to just keep doing timed questions because you have more questions to answer in these exams so it's harder to manage your time. By the time I got to my real exams, I was able to do the exam with some time left which I swear is not possible in English exams😂 whereas some of the people in my class were tight for time! Best of luck for Year 13 I know you'll smash it!

I completely agree with the mindset thing with English. In year 10 we ended up having 4 teachers and I completely lost my love and faith in myself for English after winning awards for English earlier in school. All through year 11 we had the head of English and I worked harder than I ever did and ended up coming out with a 9 after getting a 6 at the end of year 10 and now I'm considering it for A level. I want to do politics and history at degree level and I am definitely taking history and geography next year, so these two videos have been so helpful in choosing between English and politics a levels so thank you so much!

💃🏻 I can relate to you so much. I went on such a rollercoaster with English Literature too! I was also shook because it was the highest grade on my results, 8, and I got a lower 6 in my last mock compared to my second mock. I started on a grade 4 in year 10. I remember in class when the teacher would always say my points are tenuous and far fetched. My essay scores would always fluctuate by

Nebula - Agar.io did u like your teachers? In my school my teacher would give me a 6 or 7 in mocks but our work gets remarked again by another English teacher in our school who does not teach my class and they would drag my grade down to a 4 or 5. I basically lost trust in my own teacher as I thought he was marking my work too generously and I trusted the other teachers. In the end I felt so lucky as I think the person who marked my real exam was a nice person 😂😂

Urvi B My teacher was fine but I always felt like my analysis wasn’t given enough credit. When we got essay feedback my scores would always fluctuate so much! I would always respond and take action on my feedback but then another ebi which you thought you never became a problem. This could’ve demotivated anyone but I guess the lesson is stick to it until its done.

this is so interesting!! I also take A level English lit (on AQA 😝) and I really enjoy it, surprisingly. I threw away my English books 2 months before my English GCSEs because I was convinced I wasn't taking it but I found the jump from GCSE to A level not too big compared to my other subjects. The main thing is by far the essays. It takes time to get into the routine of how to write the essays as you have to meet different assessment objectives and think critically on so many levels but as soon as it clicks you're good to go😂 What Eve said about growth is completelyyyy true, so don't be discouraged! It's a time consuming subject with longer essays and books to read and annotate but if you have the right state of mind you'll enjoy it!! Hope this helps someone 😊😊 great vid Eve!! Xx

AS English lit was deffo a love hate for me but overall I love it and will be doing it again this year (got an A only dropping 1 mark on my 1st paper for closed book) loved all the texts too as we did Death of A Salesman, Keats, Gatsby and Othello. I think AQA is just as hard as OCR even with the 8 texts for OCR - we still so a lot of work. But yes GCSE and AS English are so different. Gatsby is such a masterpiece so there's just so much to say when writing essays so I totally feel you there!

If you don't love reading, it may not be a great idea to take English Lit because it is recommended to read other books along side the books you are studying. I think it is important to really enjoy the subjects that you want to take for Alevel and also be quite good at it. However if you want to take it, then don't be put off by what i said.

we legit have had the same experience with lit omg- no jokes a level lit is hard on all exam boards but in aqa we actually did 8 texts not including unseen analysis (on paper 1: love through the ages we did "Othello" which was extract based, unseen poetry comparison, and "the great gatsby" compared with pre-1900 anthology love poems, on paper 2: modern times we did "a streetcar named desire," analysis of an extract of unseen prose. and a comparison between the novel "the god of small things" and the poetry collection "skirrid hill," and for coursework we had to choose two texts to compare so i chose "to the lighthouse" and "villette.") Also, the sophistication aqa examiners want from you is bloody ridiculous (luckily it was how i write.) The thing about progression is so true- i was getting b's essentially right up until after my mocks in the february of year 13 where after i legit had a massive breakdown like u did- after that (like ur teacher- aren't they fab i genuinely dunno where i'd be without mine what a babe- she also told me like u to stop writing practice essays cause she had nothing else to say bantaa) my teacher sat me down n gave me this whole chat on how i need to STOP THINKING I CAN'T because i obviously can n a whole lot of other top notch advice. Afterwards i just was suddenly getting a*'s, and then full marks consistently all because my mindset had suddenly switched. Obvs it wasn't all plain sailing n i still cried regularly about it n worked myself up into such a state before my first exam that my teacher legit pulled me to one side right before i was going in to give me a metaphorical slap in the face as it were that i wasn't going to fail lol. Still came out of that exam crying as i thought i'd bombed it (didn't do as bad as i thought- DON@T JUDGE UR OWN WORK IT IS FUTILE) n just tried to channel all my energy into nailing the second paper (which thank god i did i am actually still so proud of my 24/25 streetcar essay ngl i wanna frame it) But I got my a* in my lit a level n am now about to start my degree in it- genuinely am so grateful i didn't give my passion up because i was an impatient sod n continued to wallow in my self-pity. U can do it- lit is hard but if u keep up the critical and wider reading like i did, and constantly review ur essays to see how u got the mark u did u will ace it! I believe in u bby stick at it like i did n u will be fandabbydozy xxx

So true that judging your own exams doesn't work! I ended up with full UMS on the French paper I cried after and thought had erased all possibilities of an A*! That's the only exam I've ever cried about so that was the biggest shock of results day!

I will be in year 13 at the start of the new academic year and I study English literature however I do AQA, the reason I chose to continue my studies in English was because I've always enjoyed the subject. Despite this, at the start of year 12 I hated it! My grades were considerably lower in English compared to my other subjects and it was really knocking my confidence. And because my grades were not necessarily as good as some of the other students in my class I felt as though my teacher didn't believe in me as I believed that she favoured some of those student who were already achieving those slightly higher grades (which she didn't I just thought this because I tend to get in my own head about things) I began to tell myself that I was the worst in my class and that I wasn't intelligent enough for A Levels and my confidence decreased even lower than it was before. However, when it came to the the end of year mocks I was really stressing the night before my exam thinking I was going to 'fail' again like all of the other mocks I had done throughout the year however I came out with the third best grade in my class which I am so proud of. After receiving this grade I began to enjoy English again, it's all about perseverance even not giving up because at the end of the day hard work does pay off.

My English teacher in year 11 has been telling me the whole year I could get a 9 if I really put my mind to it. Throughout the year I'd be getting at most a 8 so I thought getting a 9 was impossible seeing as in a May mock I managed to get only a 8 and was lacking in English revision. However, somehow I managed to get a 9 for in my GCSE and it took me by surprise but made me cry tears of joy. Anyways, this has just proven to me that anything is possible in terms of academic progress and I'm so so excited to start my English lit A level in September.

I regret taking maths, chemistry, physics. I was so good at english. I've now failed all my alevels at year 1 and full of regret. My advice to others is take a subject you'll enjoy and that you're actually good at, because you'll most likely not cope without it. I now have no carrier path (ironic given I've got all sciences), because science-based subjects like physics, which is the subject I enjoy most, is only offered at mid/top universities and the requirements are generally A or above in maths (I got U for maths), so my career options are out the window. I was confused after GCSEs at what to take, because I did well in all 9 subjects (didn't get below B), and I enjoyed a wide range of subjects. But alevels is a whole other game, and I think having at least one other subject to rely on if all else fails is a mercy. Seriously read ahead after GCSEs and find out what each subject you like is about at A-level, I know I would've chosen differently. My advice is a bit scattered and I'm in a state of shock and confusion myself, but I'm sure others understand what it's like making the wrong choice.

Saved myself, was taking bio, chem, physics, maths, I did good at them in my gcse but I got 2 grade 9's in English and just swapped physics to English on the 3rd week realising I'm a naturally creative person and I need to do things I'm good at and enjoy because my brain generally needs it. It honestly made me feel so much more alive after swapping x

@@chloe-xr9wj I'm so happy for you! I wish I made that decision early on too. I used to be pretty good at English GCSE, and did a lot of creative writing outside of/after school as a hobby. I ended up getting CCD grades for my A-Levels (teacher given grades due to pandemic I couldn't sit them), and I am now studying physics at uni lol. If I took english over chemistry, or maths, I definitely would've enjoyed my A-Levels and got better grades/worked harder. My only advice is to start revising early. It goes really fast, and you don't want to end up like me going through uni clearing and barely getting onto a course. You've got this!

@@snakez1747 yes but what career would u have gotten into if u took English? I’m contemplating taking psychology biology and either literature or chemistry. I feel like if I pick chem I’ll have a clear career to get into like med school which I used to want to do but every new video I watch scares me. The mark scheme for chemistry is SO strict just in gcse year so imagine a levels. On the other hand, I feel like literature compliments psychology and possibly biology because of the essay writing in psych and I enjoy reading a lot. Also I took history gcse so I already know some of the context for English. History is also a subject I enjoy but jot taking it since it’s not particularly useful but I can there is a lot of talking about history and society in English. The only problem is I have no idea what career path to go into with those a levels. I don’t hate science though, I find it interesting which is why I’m taking biology, not just because it looks good. Chemistry can be nice sometimes but at the same time can make me feel like dying

@@khadija2739 Hello. I have no idea where English would have taken me, but I am currently doing a Physics degree. Whilst very difficult, I enjoy it. I’m not one for reading at all, so it was probably wise I didn’t take English, and looking back, it was my attitude and laziness that caused me to get bad A-Level results, not my subject choices. If you want to take a career in science, just know that the UK is going to invest hugely into science over the next decade. That being said I have no idea what career path English offers you. In terms of your A-Level choices, just know that the gap from GCSE is huge, and A-Levels goes by in a flash. Work hard at them, you will gain so much confidence I wish I had now. A-Level Chemistry is by far the hardest subject in my opinion (I found it harder than maths & physics), yet it is very interesting and rewarding. I think it is probably the most respected A-Level, and it will open up so many career paths for you. It will definitely complement your other choices (psychology, biology) nicely. If you like reading a lot, and writing a lot, psychology will reflect that. But Biology and Chemistry is purely memorisation, with some maths in chemistry like logs. Overall, I’m in no position to give you advice, I left A-Levels with 3 C’s and had to beg for a course placement. When I left school I suddenly had all these responsibilities and it’s terrifying. I’ve spent my first year not studying and in a bad place until now and I’m trying to catch up. All I can say is do what you enjoy, but prepare yourself mentally and build confidence. Sorry if that’s not the answer you wanted, but I hope it helped in some way. Best of luck.

@@snakez1747 no this was great advice honestly! The best I’ve gotten so far lol it’s quite reassuring because I thought u had to be incredibly smart to understand chemistry. I think instead of dreading chemistry I should look forward to it and be excited to learn all these new amazing concepts. Science is amazing, you just have to put the effort to learn and you will be very glad u did...at least I think I’m only 16 but I’m sure from what I’ve seen so far. Ah I know I will miss English, but it is always something I can study in my own time and appreciate. Honestly what’s scaring me is just the future and me regretting my choices but I think if I just work as hard as possible it will be ok. I really appreciate u putting the effort to write this my fears for 6th form have calmed down a lot now because of it. I was never really studious in high school only year 10/11 and I really regret that and want to change it for 6th form. Do u have any tips on revising for a levels? I’ll be going to 6th form and I’m pretty scared tbh and don’t want to make any mistakes. If u don't it's fine ur advice was already so good thank you!

You have to work at it so much, and it can get annoying as f, ocr seriously put you through the mill

I’ve done both OCR (year 1) and AQA (year 2 because I changed colleges) and for AQA we had 5 books and 15 poems and two courseworks. In terms of difficulty I’d actually say they’re the same, but I do think that with AQA there’s just more freedom of choice with texts and it’s more flexible - which, tbf, is how an English course should be, (although in the end the boards test the same thing)
