I genuinely believe that this game was simply far ahead of its time and as such the existing tech was unable to support the grand scale that Rockstar had originally envisioned for it. I can only imagine how great it would have been had it been released in the PS3 era instead. For me, the story, especially Chapter 4 (Paparazzi and Defender of the Castle being some of the worst missions I've ever played in a game), felt a bit choppy with its lack of continuity and wasted potential but it was quite a unique game that I'm disappointed that they haven't gone back to yet.

Bully is not lore deep? The fact that you can discover stuff about characters by listening to the quotes of other random characters is deep enough. It's like Bullworth really is an alive town. That never happens in GTA, where you mostly get to know the storyline characters.

It's little kids roleplaying as gangsters and larping as controllers of a schoolyard. Tbh we all kinda dreamt of running Little kid gangs slinging "illegal" toys and candies and "controlling our turf" even though we had no control over anything beyond a bunch of kids. I think it suits the innocent yet dreamlike wonder of a kid's mindset very well, watching a bunch of cool kickass gangster mafia or whatever movies and thinking we can do the same in the backyard or the locker room of our school, having enemies and controlling areas. I love it. The best part about Bully is that you don't have to be too critical about the story when playing it. Just get into the roleplaying mindset of a 14-15-year-old and relive your school days. I see it that way and it's an Oscar worthy story for me

We saw the Asylum in the game before, when we had to bust Galloway out of there in the mission Galloway Away, earlier in the game. So we were introduced to the Happy Volts Asylum before the Finding Johnny Vincent mission.

But it's a good idea to do those side missions so you get an idea of how to navigate the asylum for when you later return for the Finding Johnny Vincent mission. Plus I believe you need the side missions to finish the game 100%, so might as well do them as soon as they become available.

The stereotypes around that time aren't really known unless you studied history. Roughly a few or less years later they edited the scenes she was in, making her a skinny white woman instead. In essence, this has been around long, long before the Internet.

I actually like that Bully's more comedic, it still balances that well, it's still kind of dark comedy, doesn't downplay the severity of anything that happens, based on very realistic and relatable topics, would've felt weird if it were as grim as other Rockstar titles, it hits the perfect balance for me. And at the same time; while there are plenty of weirdos and eccentricities in Bully; the people somehow feel less messed up than the people in GTA and Manhunt, despite the fact those games supposedly take place in the same universe as Bully, I mean pretty much every pedestrian in GTA needs deep psychological help, people in Manhunt are just stone-cold killers and it's like they strive to be more messed up than GTA people,, but the people in Bully feel realistically weird and cruel.

Yes. Bully shows teenagers in the most realistic way. They are not psychologically unstable to the point like gta 5 where everyone is killing each other and pulling off one liners. There is a reason for Gary being pissed at jimmy,his mental illness making him paranoid, and every fight in the game. The story is very well paced.

5:40 You kinda overlooked that skipable intro's main purpose--to get the player to understand Jimmy as a person. After all, you're going to be playing as him so it's important to strongly establish his character, even if he's not really all that complex. The way that Jimmy talks back to his mom and step-father shows us that he's got a very firm rebellious streak (which is reinforced by them dropping him off at this school at all, and that Bullworth is his last chance). By lingering on his face multiple times, the blocking of the shots also implies that despite this backtalk Jimmy is genuinely hurt by his family's rejection of him--which synchronizes well with how Gary's taunts about his mom at the end of the game get Jimmy so riled up that he charges them both off a roof. Whether this was intention isn't something I can fully argue, but the cinematography does leave room for interpretation despite the animation not being able to give a lot of emotional information. Of note is that this establishes two of the most important things: Jimmy's most consistent character trait--i.e. fighter--and the thing that you're going to be doing for the next 30+ hours--fighting. Making Jimmy's headspace so accessible to the player is a good way to reinforce the game's core desire to basically be a wish-fulfillment version of high school where you--yes, *you!*--can punch anybody in the face

The story is not light hearted at all, maybe until chapter 2. He gets expelled from school and he's running around beating up crackheads in a trailer park and abandoned factory and getting chased by police. He has no friends at that point and his parents would have probably disowned him if he didn't get back into school. The map design is also really depressing and sad past new Coventry

I created a theory that all the clique members were working together somehow with Gary and his final plan. Gary said the same stuff to Jimmy and Edgar, and the leaders to conquer the school and to be the most powerful clique of bullworth. Gary used Jimmy as a tool and alibi for all the conflict between cliques and the bad things that happened on the end of game, as Gary always do, manipulating the prefects, The Headmaster, and everyone. Of course that this theory is only based on the speech in the final showdown, all the things that were said in the begging, and how Jimmy were always blamed for everything. I thought about this theory after the mission Making a Mark, because Jimmy lost all the respect for the cliques. For me that does not make any sense, because all the leaders were stimulating Jimmy to do it. I would like to discuss more about it, cheers master Nat!

My views on the story goes like this. Most of the missions were generally fun and creative. In terms of story telling, there are too many bad and confusing parts like in Chapter 4 where the nerds hate Jimmy for no reason or why the hell Jimmy is helping Lola out in Chapter 3 and betrays Johnny Vincent. It’s honestly just the setting, funny diolauge, and the uniqueness of this game that makes it one of my all time favorites.

The confusing parts of the story are intentionally meant to be confusing because most of the game is built on random clichés and typical high school stereotypes, which is exactly why I love the game. The game doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and that’s the fun aspect of it.

Still hoping for a remaster/sequel. I know it won't happen anytime soon, if ever, but honestly, besides GTA 6 and RDR3 it would be awesome to see Bully come to life like a virtual Phoenix. It would be interesting, where it would go. Especially if there are chances for: - better graphics, voice and storytelling, still loyal to the original - being able to do tasks, which increase/decrease clique loyalty - all bosses in free roam, and you can interact with them. - something extra, like a mission or two more, and/or dates with NBPs. Also there are those clubhouses, which are just storage spaces in the original. It would be awesome, if Jimmy could call up cliques/friends to hang out (for example) at the beach/beach house or alternatively arrange a races/gigs/heists/competitions - a chance to either join a clique or remain non-clique, and pass time with the groups in forms of games/chatter - more classes with more challenging lessons I know I'm just dreaming, but honestly, I can't wait, IF Bully ever comes back.

Had to get up today early, and this popped up in my reccomended bar, so I thought I'd share some thoughts. I have to record, or write my own full analysis of the story, because it'd be too long for a KZbin comment anyway. Many times in the game when you encounter unexplainable things happening in favor of main character it can be called, as we call it in business "a screenwriter conspiracy". I'm a screenwriter myself, and had to deal with this many times, but even so, I always had to be very subtle about this. Basically what it is - to have someone you really need to progress the story come up very convieniently, sometimes even out of the blue. Just like Pete in Johnny bossfight. And while sometimes it is the only good solution to use, to keep your story complete, it shouldn't be overused. But we have to remember that during game development the time is limited, and you have to make decisions like that on the go, which is why sometimes they probably prefered to keep it that way. During Johnny's bossfight I believe that it was originally intended for player to turn on the magnet themselves, but this was the easy method to implement Pete in there, and show "hey, its me, your friend, I'M HELPING". Bully has got more moments like that, for example mentioned ones when Jimmy knows automatically where asylum is, where townies hang out, and where Russel lives. Every chapter was designed for you to deal with various cliques, and that is a good planning for the story, especially since all of the cliques are unique in their own way. Gary still is somewhere, but to analyse his aspect on the story is another long subject. Also the deleted missions/mission order plays a big role here, but thats another long subject, so I'd keep it brief. Chapter 1 was done pretty good, when fighting with actual Bullies, who were portrayed as dumb kids picking on each other. It is realistic when you think about it, since in real life after you stand up to a bully and beat him up, you often are either left alone, or start to get along with him. Also no surprise there why they were picking on you for no apparent reason. It also serves as a tutorial, which is pretty normal in videogames. When you play the game casually you can see the respect stat actually working out, because when you did missions for the nerds they started to like you. Russell boss fight shows other bullies "Damn, this guy is serious", and leaves you in peace. Chapter 2 also has a good start. Its not like Jimmy wanted to pick on someone different. Its actually Gord who came to see Jimmy, and offered him to box with them. Its not like preps wanted to bully Jimmy at this point, imo they were more likely to give him an illusion of befriending him, and use him because they knew at that point, that he means business. And it would probably kind of work out, if not the fact Gary went into the game. We know by now, that he means no good, and so Jimmy has to prove his worth again. And he does it. Chapter 3 starts similiar way. Jimmy wants to enjoy peace and quiet, but he is called by Johnny for help. At this point Johnny knows well that Jimmy means business, and can help him, because he is outside of his clique. Why Jimmy helps him? Same reason he helped preps - Jimmy just doesnt want any trouble, and why should he always get into fights, especially in his situation, where he was expelled many times? This way he could earn new friends, and live a good school life. And it all worked out, until a point when Earnest tells him about Algie. Jimmy probably doesn't realise what is going on at this point, and decided to check it out, and seeing Gary doing his dirty stuff again he knows, that since this point everything is going to fall apart. This is why Jimmy turns against greasers - because if he didn't help Algie and Chad all he worked for the past weeks would be irrelevant, as the cliques would be fighting each other again. This leads to Jimmy having to prove himself for greasers, and since he knows Johnny for now, he also knows that the best way to get into him would be getting closer to Lola. This is a point in game, where I actually genuinely think that mission Rendezvouz being removed is a good thing - Jimmy never did all those things for Lola because he cared for her, but because he wanted to piss Johnny. He even says so after the bossfight. And the mission Rendezvouz kind of portrays Jimmy as a betaorbiter, which is not fitting for his attitude at all. Chapter 4 starts in a good way. Things seems to be going well again, and Jimmy probably had a few weeks of peace and quiet. Cliques werent picking on each other, and he didnt have to fight. It starts with jocks picking on Pete, and Jimmy defending him as a form of chapter trailer - what should you expect soon. And here is where things are getting screwed up very badly. I dont like chapter 4 to be honest, mostly because the bad storyline. I agree that The Big Game is a good mission, but not only the outcome is appalling, the way to the Big Game is also very rushed. Also - Gary seems to be actually NOT involved in this, which is weird, considering his actions up to this point. Chapter 5 is again done quite badly in the final game. Its clear how Gary seeing Jimmy getting along with everyone has an easy job. All he has to do was to generate havoc, and blame Jimmy. This way all of the cliques would disbelieve in the possibility of living a normal school life, without bullies, picking on people, fights and so on. Basically to show everyone that Jimmy's vision of life is a farce, and school is still a battleground. Cliques would turn on each other again, and during the riots take over control of the school. I really have to write a longer form, where I re-arrange the missions order, and create an ultimate explanation to Bully's story. It is worth it.

I think it's really important to think about who's actually behind the scenes, which is not the really "Rockstar" who developed GTA series, but specifically Barking Dog Studios, now known as Rockstar Vancouver. Bully came with many expectations from previous Rockstar games entries, even though to R* Vancouver it was their first game of that kind. I'd suggest everyone to watch the newly released video "The Controversial History of Bully" to take a look on Bully's development. From having a cartoony theme during the first half to Jimmy's personality used to be very much like Gary. While I don't think it will justify the plot holes and inconsistency of Bully's story, it should give a reasonable reason on why it's there. Despite that, I think everyone can agree that Bully's story is still charming to everyone who have been a teenager in school.

Describing the plot in an analysis video is sort of like exposition in movies, it should be secondary and hopefully we should never realize it's happening. I've played both Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto. Bully/Canis Canem Edit is still the best Rockstar game I've ever played.

I still to this day love the story. Gary’s betrayal upset me on my first ever run and I was eagerly waiting to finally beat the shit out of him and when I got to complete mayhem. I was so happy beating the living shit out of him for all the shit he did to Jimmy, Pete and everyone else.

One detail I really like about the story and Jimmy in particular is how the power progressively gets to his head. In chapter 1, he’s very humble and actually looks intimidated against Russell. In Chapter 2, his ego ramps up a bit by his victory against Bif and Derby. At the beginning of chapter 3, Peanut walks up asking for a favour on Johnny’s behalf in a respectful manner, though Jimmy bites his head off. Still, he just wants to be left alone at this point. By the time he beats Johnny, even he admits how he’s feeling good about himself and he openly bullies his only friend who stuck by his side since day one (though he stands up for him against the jocks). This ramps up further in Chapter 4 and by the time Jimmy beats the jocks, the power has clearly gotten to his head and has corrupted him. Only to go back to square one shortly after. It’s a very subtle detail I’ve not heard many people bring up.

To be fair to the asylum mission in Chapter 5, if you do all the side missions in the chapter they show up in you get the Galloway Asylum mission (Galloway Away) first which would instead become your introduction to the Asylum and you can just assume Miss Phillips gave Jimmy the directions to the place.

Yes I agree. I agree there are plot holes but this game went through a lot to be released. For me I can easily forgive the plot holes because the game is so damn fun and funny. Very rarely do I laugh out loud playing video games but I know it will happen everytime I play bully. Bully is very forgiving as well which I greatly appreciate, you can’t get seriously harmed/dead or lose anything important. Some of the missions he talked about having no point, I didn’t mind because I got stuff for my room usually which made me happy. I like collecting collectibles and bully is good for that. The things the npc say crack me up even 12 years later. The fact I can break the rules at my will with nothing bad really happening is refreshing. I know you can do that on gta but there’s something about getting thrown back into school and breaking the rules, idk. If I had to complain about anything in this game it would be the new classes they added. For example I feel like biology doesn’t give you much time at all, as well as with the newer class s you get clothing items vs items in your room or perks, Which I don’t really love.. Occasionally I will change my outfit, sometimes to something goofy, but it’s annoying when everyone laughs at you so I just stay in the same thing lol. I guess what I’m saying is 12 years later, plot holes and all, I’m still very much so enjoying this game.
