Twenty five years ago, India was forced to launch a war to evict Pakistani intruders in the Kargil, Dras and Batalik sectors of what was then the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The summer of 1999 will go down in history as a major turning point in India-Pakistan relations. It was also India’s first war that was fought under intense media scrutiny.
Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale was among dozens of mediapersons who reported the Kargil war from the battle zone, then for Outlook magazine.
A quarter century later, he revisits the areas to recall the events and turning points in the 50-day-long war but this time with half a dozen veterans who had led troops in crucial battles that summer.
In this episode of 'Simply Nitin', he brings you the backstory of that journey.

I travelled to Batalik last year. Landed at Leh, took a cab for Kargil and told him to go via the longer Batalik route. I stopped at Dah which was the HQ of 70 brigade in 99. I turned right from Dah where Yaldor Nala meets the Indus river and travelled along the Yaldor Nala to the north although civilians are not allowed. My cab driver freaked out after 2 kms and we turned back. I could see the mighty Kukarthang ridge just to my left. It was captured by 1/11 GR in July. I was looking at it, it was fucking impossible to climb.

Nitin you have done a wonderful job by covering minute details of the Kargil war of 1999 and analyzing it in detail. I have been following your journalistic career and your contribution is really commendable on defense, geo-politics, and analyzing the issues in detail. Please focus on North-East sectors too and the Red corridor too. I have seen your North-East series too but keep bringing out interesting documentaries and share with the general public. My Dad served in IA and retired as Colonel. I had the privilege of travelling to J&K - Srinagar, Kupuwara, Nemu and LOC, also lived in Pune at Kirkee cantonment and Bangalore. It refreshes the old memories of cantt and Army life. Wishing you more success and all the very best for more interesting documentaries!!

Vajpayee was wrong in not letting Indian Air Force to cross the borders. Again, we should have opened other fronts to teach Pakistan a hard lesson. But, Vajpayee was looking for Noble peace prize

@@nitingokhale184 Eagerly awaiting for the interview which will clear lot of doubts and update the general public (civil) with updated information. This was a war which was planned to annex parts or salami slicing Indian territory but they were not successful, Vajpayee's hand were not restricted but he was within his rights to clear off intruders in Indian part of LOC. All the best Nitin!!
