Wow Steve! I just started watching this video and the first part of the podcast where you guys are talking about optimisation and what's manageable is just so key. In my job as a clinician and having a chat to people about exercise, getting the initial consistency and making things doing is so important. Laying that groundwork and foundation before moving towards optimality is so important!

So Steve in another video with you and Mike (on the couch series) Mike said that dropping weight just to get more volume is a bad idea. Isn't this essentially the same thing as doing down sets? How is this not "junk volume"? Jared talked about it in one of his video's, so I'll concede I'm probably missing something here. Off to rewatch that. But I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Stimulus/fatigue-ratio... Another epiphany by Dr. Mike. Just like the volume landmarks, it's something that many experienced lifters have thought about in a clouded and vague manner, but Mike brings these concepts to paper with precision and sharpens them into powerful tools that we can all benefit from. Thank you for another great episode!

Can really relate to having “anxiety” about if I was training optimally...great episode, my biggest takeaway: simply trust in yourself that you understand the information, and also don’t be afraid to utilize your own experience based on what works with your body.

I had to change the bar out for the one i used last week because i thought the different aggression levels of knurling would through off my progression and either make me over train or make my traps regress. That was stuuuuuupid of me lol.

Interesting that the difficulty of measuring a variables’ impact on performance or muscle growth is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the effect that it could have. The unveiling of the his “stimulus-fatigue ratio” theory was also a great framing when developing a programme.
@cussyrichards61216 жыл бұрын
The discussion Mike goes into at 16mins is why I'm not sure about those who theorize that the 2-3 reps closest to failure in a set of ANY rep number are the only 'effective' reps (and the reps that preceded it are just the junk volume necessary to get to that state of fatigue). Because, if you think about it, that would mean a set of 12 reps at 2 RIR (3 'effective' reps + 9 'junk' reps) is the same volume as a set of 3 reps at 2 RIR (3 'effective' reps + 0 'junk' reps). There would be no need to drop the load to get more reps per set in order to increase volume because doing a set of 3 reps would be identical volume to doing a set of 12 reps. We all know that is NOT identical volume, therefore It is probably the case that, in a set of 12 reps, ALL 12 of those reps contribute somewhat to the generation of hypertrophic stimulus
@davethedm6 жыл бұрын
Training near your 5 RM is vastly more fatiguing than training near your 15 RM. Your recovery across the mesocycle would not be the same.
@ReviveStronger6 жыл бұрын
Mostly, it has something to do with fibre recruitment. At higher intensity, all fibres are most likely to be involved from the get-go. So 12 reps will probably still give you something but not to the same extent from rep 1. - Pascal

The fatigue you will accumulate from doing sets of 3 is far more than doing the traditional 8-15ish range. When taking stimulus to fatigue ratio into consideration, it becomes very clear why we can now recommend that 8-15 is a practical rep range from a hypertrophy standpoint. You will simply be able to accumulate much more hypertrophy versus doing sets of 3.
