Back with another Q&A with Dr. Mike Israetel. This time he's at the Olympia and records in a gym, so sorry for the audio. Still, super valuable stuff about stimulus/fatigue ratio, thermic effect of food, max muscle potential and much more!
Timestamps:
01:06 Anything new in regards to effective reps since last time? Especially after Greg's article
16:11 Why ever train with a different RIR than 2 if it's the best stimulus/fatigue ratio
23:03 Examples of research doesn't support the outcome but anecdotally seems true?
30:58 Thermic effect of food
33:36 How to transition from a volume landmark approach to a static set structure?
37:37 Max Muscular Potential calculations for naturals?
46:26 Mike speaks about expectations and enjoyment of bodybuilding
50:09 How to train to optimise health?
54:53 Muscle loss when prepping on anabolics
57:45 Cardiovascular work in an offseason as a bodybuilder?
Thanks, please comment, like and subscribe!

The 3 wise men of fitness/nutrition (through my perspective) are. Dr. Eric Helms, Dr. Mike Isratel, and Dr. Layne Norton....Honorable mention to Dr. Brad Schoenfeld and the "Ass Man" Mr. Glute Guy himself Dr. Bret Contreras. I value these men's collective opinion more than ANY personal trainer that I have ever known about in person or online. When I want credible, practical, and scientific backed information, I turn to these men....Because there is entirely WAY TOO MUCH BULLSHIT out there in the fitness community. And as a parent I be damned if my daughter, who is a highschool athlete, get misinformed as well as myself. Appreciate you guys, keep informing the ignorant and reaffirming those that "know". Wouldn't training your rep range on your muscle fiber type for the muscle with the RIR principal? For ex. Glutes are 50/50 give or take fast and slow twitch, so by knowing that you would train high reps to basically burn out one day and heavier/medium the other day.
@ReviveStronger

I think, working in a wide rep range is probably a good idea. Work from Andy Galpin has shown though, that muscle fibres can transition into being type1 or 2 & and vice versa - Pascal

What do you think of the idea to use maintenance periods/ primer phases at MV/MEV to incorporate more training to failure to both get in some more stimulus while resensitizing the body to high volume training, as well as to improve your ability to gauge RIR by training to true failure for once. My pretty much only concern is that this hinders the resensitization effect of the primer phase.

@traingear9578

in order to reach your maximum genetic potential you have to 100% optimize your diet and training .. doesn't matter how long your train, if those things are not optimized your genetic potential will never be fully realized . but thats where steroids are a great tool, they allow you to get past your genetic potential much sooner even if everything is not quite optimized.

from what I know (I could be wrong because there isn't much information available about it), Sheiko aims to increase the muscular mass of his athletes with programs that contain practically 0 effective reps. Certainly, in his programs available on the internet (or in his book), you never get close to failure. If effective repetitions play an important role in putting mass, (and certainly muscle mass has a fundamental role in powerlifting) why doesn't Sheiko use them? Thanks a lot.
@traingear9578
@traingear9578 5 жыл бұрын
this was touched on by Mike in the podcast . Muscle hypertrophy begins way before failure or even so called "effective reps" . effective reps play a role but not the only role
@traingear9578
@traingear9578 5 жыл бұрын
also keep in mind that effective reps don't necessarily progress linearly. example , if I bench press 155 pounds which is extremely light for me for say 10 reps (even though my true failure may be 30 reps) so I'm training at like an RIR of 20 (on the first set) , but if I have little rest between sets and I do up to 10 sets of those 10 reps , by time I've gotten to the last set I'm actually training much closer to failure (because fatigue has set in), even though on paper 10 reps is supposed to be an RIR of 20.. Sheiko athletes are likely training in the "effective reps" range and some points during the workout

@@BruSwayneable I have to disagree, he's spoken about taking "sports supplements" for years and working with Broderick Chavez for years. Broderick Chavez has always said that he knows nothing of natural lifting and his "niche" is with enhanced athletes. I believe Mike hasn't spoken blatantly about steroids much, if at all, due to this perception ppl seem to have that PEDs are a magic bullet and that all of his progress is solely due to drugs and not his work ethic, hard work, effort, and scientific knowledge. PEDs are only as effective as the training and nutrition accompanying them.
