I'm very glad I caught this, since I was getting the concept/impact of positive and negative feedback loops crossed when I was thinking about it. It's a very accurate no nonsense explanation that the positive feedback loops produced by this system heavily outweigh the negative feedback loops which inevitably leads to destabilizing the homeostasis we require as a species to survive long term. Fantastic explanation of these ideas. Thank you for putting this information out for us.

0:30 "It's kind of like describing the lenses in your eyes. Which you never see, you only see through" Such subtle and underrated point. And reminds me of Alan Watts, he used that example as well, several times. We are a product of our time, luckily we can communicate and both personally individually, and collectively, reflect and change course, to change the time!

I look forward to this series. Thank you, please keep up the efforts. As a frustrated “activist” I feel adrift in a broken and corrupt system where our activist tweaks are ineffective and the general population is so deeply sold on the system essentials that only ineffective tweaks are currently tolerated. In my young adult years I was an adamant and active Republican spoiled by a wealthy upbringing, but I became disenchanted the more I got to know people from various walks of life. I realized the paradigmatic capture of the left and right and realized it is the system that is sick, and we are almost all of us mesmerized by it. Although Bernie Sanders puts on offer far more effective tweaks, his tweaks simply won’t be allowed. Back when I first heard the bitterness of the “prophet”, George Carlin, I thought he was crazy. Now I sound as if I had been his mentor.

Good podcast so far! I just hope peter joseph remembers that although his train of thought may not be very popular or accepted in today's society, this doctrine will carry through to the better world that must imperatively come. His fingerprints are all over the a better, more abundant, equal and sustainable world that I hope is soon on the way.

I agree with your text here 100 percent. And/but it made me also think that Peter's "thoughts" are more popular than we actually think - if the *economic system* were completely different (for example; we would give everyone a high UBI, or we would live in a "fair" society without money at all) most people would probably agree with Peter here. It's only the economic incentives that makes most people "take side".

I listen to this episode and afterwards I "like it". Then 3 days after, I come back to see that the "like" is no longer there. Anyway, I really like your "thoughts and thinking", Peter Joseph! You're one of the most intelligent persons out there - yet, too small number of people have found this channel. You should have millions of listeners! (that would benefit us humans). You (Peter) make me feel less "alone"!

Excellent talk, love Donella's work. Regarding 'Leverage Points' as the way to intervene and change the system, it seems clear to me that money is the leverage point in this socioeconomic system and that it is being pushed in the wrong direction. It should not be issued temporarily as debt by private for-profit institutions, but issued as a permanently circulating asset by government with all money being distributed for the general welfare as its first use, its first cause. This changes the system from the Economics of Greed to the Economics of Care because all money is originated for public care. This will also reverse the significant and negative psychological consequences of the current system. Its time for a new paradigm. And, as you've explained the debt-money system creates that destructive positive feedback loop. Of course this monetary system is a system of usury which Dante described as an extraordinarily efficient form of violence by which one does the most damage with the least effort. In a system where money is issued publicly as an asset we reverse that.

Mr. Joseph, you've always had the right idea and cluttered up your argument by speaking in terms that will only be heard by the intelligent. Your audience (the who you're trying to convince) cannot fathom this discussion. The folks who can understand it, already know it. Try to dumb it down so that it can be understood by the average Trumpist, then you'll know you aren't wasting your time or breath. (Academics already know the system is faulty.) Keep at it. The world is changing anyway...

@Optimus Phoenix Prime "A spider web and fishing net are overlaping tools or technologies or abilities " That is a fun perspective. And, yes, it is true. I think whoever, or whatever Intelligence, knows the geometry to create either a spider's web or a fisher's net created both, don't you? Please meditate. Your thoughts are racing. Which is fun, but often unhelpful as it interferes with planning and the stability usually necessary to follow through with plans. Indeed. You spoke of motivation, or a lack of it. My question to you is: Are you motivated to get motivated? Do you want to want?

all of existence is literally feedback loops. What I have been finding myself doing (even when explaining or talking about personal issues with my girlfriend or family) is speaking in systems its quite interesting the journey I've been on for the last decade after "accidentally" discovering the first 2 zeitgeist films. Thank you in a negative feedback loop manner.

This debt based currency system has definitely made me mentally ill ,sick, alone and so depressed I can't even function anymore .I used to be a kids balloon entertainer for 25 years and I am in such a dark place in my mind I can't even do my job anymore and I loved my job. My family doesn't even care about me, only when I was doing good in my life did people want to be around me now they just ignore me. I have researched deep into who owns all the Banking, Media, Hollywood, Politicians and there is always one thing in common (tribe of people) that I know Peter does not call out but he knows.

It would be great if we could talk about this sometime. I don't disagree that systems thinking can be usefully applied to analyse problems in the world, and that it's possibly the best way to understand things, but it also provides a level of abstraction which I don't think is helpful. For example, as long as we blame a 'system', then we are denying both our direct complicity, and our ability to impact it. This approach generates the same end result as 'blaming government' or 'blaming big pharma' (or your effigy of choice) - in other words, it makes the problem external to us and affects our belief in our ability to influence it. (Back to carrying signs, etc. Yawn!) Though it clearly has merit in terms of problem analysis, I don't think systems thinking is a useful way to approach the solution. I think it's far more useful if we consider this 'system' as a perceived effect, rather than an entity in itself. Firstly, we cannot escape the fact that this system / perceived effect is the net collective output of billions of humans. There's no bogeyman, or 'bogey-system'. This is just what we look like from a distance. If billions of people truly didn't want this system, then we wouldn't have it.. (You can't make billions of people act against their will for any prolonged period) Secondly, while I do empathise with your exasperation at appeals to 'self-heal' or ' transcend', there is also undeniable merit here. Because if we accept that this destructive 'system' is the net effect of us, then logic requires us to accept that it is we, the actors, who need to change in order to change that effect.. This doesn't have to mean such 'astral' vagueries as used by the hippie movement, but practical everyday actions like volunteering and resource sharing can make a difference. In fact, I believe this may be the ONLY thing that can make the required difference. And here's why.. Our economic system has evolved to what it is today over a long period of time. There was no calamitous moment or epoch in history that comes close to defining our whole economic system as it is today. Rather it is the end result of quadrillions of trading acts over millennia that steadily siphoned wealth away, then created a class structure and all its ensuing nightmares. In other words, lots of small acts carried out by lots of people over time created our economic system. And the only way to undo that might be the same way we created it - one act at a time. While I appreciate that small acts carried out by individuals can seem futile or unlikely as a solution, I believe that rather than seeming impossible, it actually demonstrates the true scale of the problem. The kind of change you or I would like to see is not going to be a walk in the park. It's going to require an ENORMOUS effort to realise because it's 100% counter-culture and it's 100% counter-history. And it won't come via innovation either. Technology has serially failed to kill the market - and will continue to fail while we all occupy the same trade economic mindset. What technology displaces in hard labour, it multiplies in novel ways to self-aggrandise, exploit, destroy and subvert. In short, technology will never overwhelm the market until that is what we want. And currently, we don't want that. It is my belief that ONLY an intentional sea-change in our daily approach to labour and trade, our attitudes towards the environment and adjustments in our personal expectations can we conceivably begin to point society towards where you or i would like it to go.

Preserve the good integrity of our D.N.A. in the chance we just might be able to build a Jaque Fresco world from the ashes. Even then it's a long shot.
