Whenever I rewatch this show, I'm reminded of one of the main reasons I loved it growing up. Code Lyoko didn't dumb down how much danger the gang was in whenever XANA fired up another tower to attack them. Monsters were actually trying to kill them! And when it wasn't monsters, the environment itself was used as a weapon. This show didn't pull punches. The heroes weren't knocked out and left tied to a doomsday device like a cliche spy movie or super hero show. These insanely brave kids were PUTTING THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE. Did it have cliche moments? Of course. What show is entirely free from those? But when it was coming down to beating XANA by the skin of their teeth, I was always on the edge of my seat. I think I know why a return to the past can’t bring someone back. I believe It was stated by jeremy that a return to the past isn’t actually time travel, but a reconfiguration of molecules and atoms. If someone is dead, reconfiguring their molecules won’t revive their life
@wolfywonder84802 жыл бұрын
Oh, I just figured it was because returning their mind to the past didn't revive them; they'd still be dead, but they'd just be dead in the past instead of the rewritten future lol
@TheGamerUnknown2 жыл бұрын
That makes no sense. All that we are is just atoms. Put them back into the right arrangement and you bring a person back to life. It's just realistically that's impossible in real life, there is far too much information. But if you're literally re-setting the state of all matter to what it was hours/days ago, they'd definitely be exactly as they were.
@awsomedude234562 жыл бұрын
@@TheGamerUnknown the molecules will be the same yes, but that doesn’t exactly mean the state of the living being will be the same. Technically speaking just by looking at atoms you cannot tell if someone is dead or alive, so it’s less about the rearranging of atoms, Abd more about the states of them, such as brain function.
@TheGamerUnknown2 жыл бұрын
@@awsomedude23456 RTP puts *everything* back exactly as it was. Someone who was in the middle of thinking about math class at the moment the RTP occurs is still thinking about it when the RTP sends them back to that moment. Everything is captured. Every atom, every electron, every quantum field. If it wasn't, nothing about this would work. There isn't anything "more" than that to life. If you had all that information, you could definitely tell if someone was alive or dead. Realistically we can't do that because the information is so enormous, but it's all deterministic. The only way you pull out of RTP not reviving someone is if you add the idea of a "soul". In science, it makes no sense. The only reason RTP can't revive someone is because the writers wanted there to be stakes after they wrote themselves into a corner. That's it. It makes no sense based on the rules of the show and real life science.
@awsomedude234562 жыл бұрын
@@TheGamerUnknown that’s another thing, rtp cannot revive dead organisms. This is bc it exceeds its capabilities. Yes every atom is captured, but it just bc the arrangement is correct, doesn’t mean the life will return. Great video! I think the reason why Jeremy seems to go through reverse puberty in the English dub is because one woman voices both Aelita and Jeremy, and would record Jeremy's lines first. Great analysis. This show is SUCH a gem, we've been watching some retrospective video essays on KZbin lately and it's great seeing so many other fans take to things with an analytical slant and so much love for the story, setting and characters :D Aelita's arc is fantastic. It's really interesting to me how, even though some of the show's core concepts were revamped after Season 1 (for instance, how Aelita was supposed to be just an AI originally), there's still solid continuity and that it even adds to her character. She's so self-sacrificing, initially because she believe she's just an AI and her life doesn't have as much value as humans'. Then you find out her that most of her childhood was disrupted, she lost her mother, was in hiding from most people her age whilst on the run, and her father used her to store keys to Lyoko that made her a direct target of XANA. And then you realise that Aelita's sense that she's not that important, that she doesn't have a lot of agency, that she should put others first.... suddenly takes on a ton of new depth. Watching her grow into a formidable warrior and loving friend with a confident and sassy sense of humour (whilst still being such a sweet and gentle soul) is one of my favourite things about the series.

My favorite was when season 2 was releasing, I had gotten super into the show during season 1 and was so excited for season 2. Coming home from school to watch the new episode every day, especially with how much the plot picked up then. The final episodes of that season (The Key?) blew my mind

Good little retrospective man, honestly William getting captured was as much a failure of the rest of the group as it was with him, ironically enough season 3 starts out (during XANA Awakens) showing them blundering and botching their way through as they try to settle into the rhythm of fighting him, but think it's a good idea just casually throwing William into Sector V (the most dangerous sector) to fight against XANA who's far more powerful and capable an antagonist at this point in the show than when they were just starting out, and then when they finally get him back they just dance around the guy it just... It just makes you feel bad for the guy man... Apparently this wasn't the intention though, I remember hearing there was supposed to be a few episodes beyond where the show ended or a "final act" taking place in a Volcano Replika sector (which you see the concepts fully realized in the game Quest for Infinity) where William would have fought alongside the rest of the gang as a fully capable fighter, using his XANA gear and powers and would have gotten more closure in the ending, all of this was cut just because they ran out of budget which was a shame, I thought it was a nice detail their ship (the Skidbladnir) had an extra fighter pod for William and implied he'd have been with them to use it at some point.

Yeah i loved the original code lyoko show especially growing up as I could understand what Jeremy was saying. The monster of the week system going into an actual series was well handled with it becoming more serious. William I wish had more screentime being a good guy because they made him brainwashed immediately which would have been better after a few missions instead. Evolution many issues it has but william was actually good in it later on as the cast actually trust him but it was forced to distrust him for no reason. Book wise. I heard xana gets some development as aleitas sibling basically but I didn't read it much.

I miss this show so much, i remember seeing the first episode of this on Miguzi. I saw the giant bear episode and watched it religiously every day after school. It was the first episode but it felt like i missed one, and I couldn't find much out about it because of limited internet use at the time. It felt like such an elusive show with an anime style and a familiar 3D art style. Only a few friends at school would all get off the bus on time to watch it after so it felt like such a small group of people I knew I could talk to about it. I remember a DS and a Wii game that came out but i was unable to play either... This video just popped up into my feed now and brought back so many memories, a lot of nostalgia for the era and the show itself. I hadn't seen most of the third or fourth season. Going to deep dive into this soon now. Thank you for this video and the wave of memories, awesome video +sub

Few things to mention about some topics you mentioned, as someone who used to watch the show a lot. Jeremy's voice change made him sound closer to how he sounds in the french version, whcih i'd say is a very good change. About the final episode of season 2: Jeremy doesn't sever the link between Aelita and the computer, what was actually the case was that Aelita ahd her memories stolen, whcih made her unable to fucntion without the super computer. it is actually Franz that gives them back, after Xana stole the remaining part of her memories whcih included access codes. Those access codes are what Xana needed to escape Lyoko (probably some kind of encryption thing, idk). In the show, jeremy is never shown in his Lyoko outfit, but a series of novels written to wrap up loose ends, but they are considered alternate canon. Anyway, give Jeremy an outfit that makes him look like Link. And in Code Lyoko revolution, William is a part of the team, but the show itself feels so lame compared to the initial cartoon series and they also downgraded several characters, with Jim bing the saddest downgrade.

@c0mpu73rguy2 жыл бұрын
3:11 I mean, didn't it required to give up her HP to do that? It's no wonder that she doesn't uses that power much. 3:55 Also explained if I recall, Jeremy accidentally deleted the future vision when he tried to update their avatars and since it was more of a handicap than anything, he never tried to fix it. 5:30 My headcanon was always that the "return to the past" was not really making the world go back in time but rather putting everything back to its place (including the earth's position) and erasing everyone's memory (since William still dreamt about their adventures despite "going back to the past"). 19:51 Not exactly, the military project that was supposed to disrupt enemy communication was called Project Carthage, and Waldo Schaefer created Xana to destroy this project. That's why Xana can basically hack into everything. 23:12 Yeah, if I recall, what was said on the Lyokonet back then was that the showrunners shortened season 3 (that technically have 15 episodes if you count the double episode that serves as the prequel) in order to save up ressources for season 4 which was planned as the biggest one yet. Indeed, it's a damn shame William didn't get a proper send off... And what sequel series are you talking about? Code Lyoko does NOT have a sequel series.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh3 жыл бұрын
You must remember _Code: Lyoko_ is a French anime (minus the usual hallmarks of Japanese anime...mostly), since it is an imported show made for its native audience that received an American dub (hence, why it was able to have risque moments that most American kid's shows don't usually incorporate due to different standards between cultures [ex: XANA's shadow monster spying on Sissi in her underwear]).

I think William being kept out of that final battle makes sense since as they state themselves, the dude got taken over on his first trip there. He may be physically strong, but that would have just made him a bigger liability of Xana took control again mid battle. Not to mention he DID get taken over again, so had he been in there with them who knows how badly it could have gone. But he definitely didn't need to get sidelined as hard as he did in the final episode.

This is honestly one of the best overviews of Code Lyoko I've seen on this site! I really appreciate that it feels like you actually gave it a fair representation, which is way more than I can say for a lot of videos on this site. I always really loved the show as a kid and still do even now, so it's nice to see someone talking about more than recycling animation, season 1 is formulaic, everyone has huge foreheads (which people somehow think counts as a legitimate criticism against the show...guess Invader Zim is a bad show too, with that logic). Like yeah, it's not perfect, but a lot of the "flaws" I see repeated over and over are really not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. Plus it never makes sense to me how Code Lyoko can be criticized for being formulaic but then plenty of other shows like Sailor Moon and Pokémon are praised despite it? Pretty much every early 2000s cartoon as formulaic to some extent. Like I dunno, maybe I'm a bit biased but it just bugs me how easily people can criticize a show for one thing and then excuse a different one for the exact same thing. Like it's fine if you don't like the show but at least be consistent with your arguments. I kinda ended up rambling a bit lol, but tl;dr, good overview, hope you keep making more good content!

This is one of my absolute favorite shows to this day, but of all the things this (absolutely excellent!) video touches on I think my favorite is how you mentioned the struggles felt very relatable despite the extreme sci-fi, and I think it's actually because of the most sci-fi thing in the show: the time reset. It means they could have them realistically make serious and normally irreversible mistakes like blowing their cover over childlike excitement, and still have a built in way to bounce back from it. This show did NOT hold back with the seriously messed up stuff they had to go through and tons of the resets were by the skin of their teeth, and it made every episode feel like it genuinely mattered, regardless of actual overall importance. In a lot of ways it was the hook that made me keep coming back, cause despite being such a risky concept that could easily jump the shark it (mostly) avoided ever taking it too far or making it too convoluted. From making each episode feel important, to letting you get a better understanding of characters by seeing multiple sides of them with everything their most desperate selves with the good timeline actions where they learn from their mistakes, the time rewinding really did underlie a LOT of the show's strengths by removing typical limits on the storytelling. …Still, i have to admit, Code Lyoko is only my SECOND favorite french animation monster of the week childhood classic about up to 5 teenagers moving between worlds lol. First will probably always be W.I.T.C.H.

I swear someone on the writing staff shipped odd and sissi. They have subtle ship tease that seems mutual but won't go anywhere til they mature. Odd's relationships with girls is the most interesting romantic thing in the show. All other romance is either standard or meh.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh3 жыл бұрын
Well, Jeremie X Aelita are "Mr. & Mrs. Einstein" for a reason. Likewise, Ulrich & Yumi's Will They/Won't They relationship (especially once you throw bad boy William into the mix before his possession by XANA, since Yumi was clearly using William to make Ulrich jealous) was what many shippers were wanting to see finally get resolved (the _Code Lyoko: Evolution_ sequel actually featured the live-action actors of Ulrich & Yumi actively dating, both in the show...and in real-life, with them having cute social media posts about it, but that was probably the only redeemable aspect about the sequel). Odd, much like how he was an American transfer student to Kadic Academy, was the outlier when it came to relationships, since his first girlfriend, Sam, turned out to be a shoplifter, who soon disappeared following her introduction. Later, as the series progressed, teases of a relationship between Odd & Elizabeth -- I mean, Sissi -- were added in an attempt to flesh out Sissi's character beyond alpha bitch/queen bee/mean girl archetype by allowing her to essentially become an unofficial member of the gang (alongside Jim, again, since the Lyoko Warriors needed an adult figure who could also go to bat for them if the need arose).

Or when she struck first against Xana's Mantis monsters and Ulrich said she was spoiling the fun. But Jeremy was in danger and she wasn't having that.
