His mother died as their car hit a mine planted by Russian forces. Andriy survived with serious injuries an told his story to RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service on March 29 at the hospital in the western city of Lviv where he is recovering.

But respect doesn't always equal strength it can also mean understanding, because I understand him. I have compassion and empathy for what he's going through because I know only a fraction of that pain. He could've broken down crying and I'd still respect him. My comment about Ukrainians being tough as nails came from the fact they're still fighting despite these literal war crimes happening to them, and I respect them for that but I do respect this boy too. When we were in former Yugoslavia my dad said they are staying no matter what, that they could only take his cold dead body but until that moment he will fight and that’s what we did. Stay professional. tribunal for them - IF they survive incarceration. Shortage of food, u understand... First Ukraine army than captured get food. If they starve, they get week. That is good. Cant flee.
